Cthulhu is a fictional cosmic entity originally devised by author H. P. Lovecraft as an evil god from beyond the human universe. The creature remains a popular element of Lovecraftian horror today.
– According to the Terraria lore pages, Cthulhu sought to bring about destruction and domination in the world of Terraria, before an ancient race of Dryads waged war against it and crippled it by ripping out its organs. Cthulhu then retreated to the moon to heal and prepare for its next attack. While Cthulhu in this form never makes an appearance in Terraria, a number of enemies and items include direct and indirect references to Cthulhu, and the Moon Lord is heavily implied to be the weakened form of Cthulhu.

Notes
- The Lunatic Cultist plans on restoring Cthulhu and has forced the Mechanic to forge mechanical organs of Cthulhu. However, since she has never completed the mechanical brain, the restored Cthulhu cannot function, and thus, unless the aforementioned implication that he became the Moon Lord is true, he never appeared again.
Trivia
- In the concept art, he is missing one of his eyes, presumably because the missing eye became the Eye of Cthulhu boss.
- One of the title messages on the Desktop version refers to this: "Terraria: Cthulhu is mad... and is missing an eye!"
