The Coin Gun being used to attack Target Dummies. Note the value of the coin increases its respective damage.

The Coin Gun is a Hardmode ranged weapon that uses coins as ammunition, which affects its damage and velocity depending on the type of coin fired. The weapon itself has 0 base damage, with the entirety of its damage value stemming from the coins used to fire it. Coin projectiles dissipate upon hitting an enemy or solid block and cannot be retrieved once fired. The Coin Gun is dropped very rarely ((Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/4000 (0.025%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/8000 (0.0125%) chance) by regular Pirate Invasion enemies, excluding the Parrot. The Coin Gun's drop chance from Pirate Captains is quadrupled ((Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/1000 (0.1%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/2000 (0.05%) chance) and increased again from the Flying Dutchman(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) (1/50 (2%) chance).

(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The Coin Gun cannot be reforged, and therefore cannot have modifiers.

(Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The Coin Gun cannot receive any modifiers that increase damage, so the modifier that boosts its DPS the most is Agile (+12% speed[a], +3% critical strike chance). Zealous (+5% critical strike chance) serves as the most ammo-efficient option, dealing the highest amount of damage per coin fired.

Ammo Damage Velocity
Copper Coin Copper Coin 25 1
Silver Coin Silver Coin 50 2
Gold Coin Gold Coin 100 3
Platinum Coin Platinum Coin 200 4

Notes

  • All ranged damage bonuses from equipment will be applied to the traits of the coins used to fire it (a Destroyer Emblem will add 8% critical strike chance to the Coin Gun and Gold Coins, but will only add the 10% damage bonus to the Gold Coins).
  • The Coin Gun does not receive the specialized damage boost from any of the three headpieces of Shroomite armor.[b]
  • Ammo conservation effects such as those of the Ammo Box, the Ammo Reservation Potion, or Shroomite armor work normally with the Coin Gun.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Coins are consumed from the designated coin slots first, then the inventory (from top left to bottom right).
    • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Coins are consumed from the inventory first (from top left to bottom right), then the designated coin slots.
  • In Celebrationmk10(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, the Coin Gun can be purchased from the Princess for 30 GC after completing a Pirate Invasion for the first time.

Tips

  • If used with Platinum Coins, the Coin Gun is easily one of the most powerful weapons in the game, though this can make combat prohibitively expensive.
  • Combining the Coin Gun with either the Lucky Coin, Coin Ring(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), or Greedy Ring(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), can establish a somewhat infinite supply of ammo, as long as combat is intensive.
  • The Coin Gun becomes much more viable in Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) due to the larger volume of coin drops.
  • It pairs well with Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Shroomite armor as it greatly increases the DPS and reduces coins used.
  • The Coin Gun firing Platinum Coins has a similar damage output per shot as the Sniper Rifle, but with nearly five times the fire rate.
  • In Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the player can duplicate infinite amounts of Gold/Platinum Coins starting with just one Silver Coin, thus making the Coin Gun an extremely powerful weapon for Journey Mode.
  • Without taking defense into account, it is more cost-efficient to convert coins to lower denominations for ammo. However, this comes at the cost of a lower damage rate. Because 1,000,000 Copper Coins can be made from a single Platinum Coin, Copper Coins are 125,000 times more resource-efficient than using platinum to achieve the same damage.
  • The Coin Gun requires a constant craft of 100 low-tier coins because the pickup of coins can convert the stacks with lower than 100 coins into a higher-tier coin, otherwise it can eventually use unwanted coins. It requires constant attention to the ammunition amount indicated. If there is less than 200 ammo, it can start using Silver, Gold or Platinum Coins.
    • The Encumbering Stone(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can be useful to ensure that extra coins are not picked up accidentally over the course of a battle.

Trivia

  • The Coin Gun remains an extremely rare item. Before 1.3, it took an average of 66–67 Pirate Invasions to be completed before it dropped. With the addition of the Flying Dutchman in 1.3.0.1, there is an increased chance for the Coin Gun to be dropped, but it is still very rare.

History

  • Console 1.03: Built in an auto-destruct for items that the player should never have (the list includes Coin Gun).
  • Console 1.02: Introduced, but not implemented due to a different currency handling in the console versions causing the Coin Gun to randomly shoot coins of any value.

Footnotes

  1. By default, Agile increases speed by 10%. However, like with all modifiers, the effective increase differs from weapon to weapon due to rounding. For the Coin Gun specifically, Agile increases speed by an effective 12%.
  2. Even though the Coin Gun would normally qualify for the Shroomite Helmet's boost on Desktop version Desktop, Console version Console, and Mobile version Mobile, it is unaffected by it. This is due to the weapon's damage stat of 0.
