For other tools that can cut down trees and cacti, see Chainsaws and Hamaxes.

Axes are tools used to remove trees and cacti. Some axes have chainsaw counterparts, which cut faster but have lower range. Some axes can serve as both axes and hammers at the same time, known as hamaxes, or as both an axe and a pickaxe. Newly created characters spawn with a Copper Axe (Iron Axe in Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)).

When evaluating the practical efficiency of an axe, two stats should be taken into consideration: Axe power and chopping speed. Higher axe power causes an axe to deal more "damage" to trees and cacti per hit, and lower chopping speed values mean that the axe hits trees and cacti more frequently. The use time attribute can safely be disregarded, because it reflects the weapon swing/animation and is not related to the hits for cutting.

The best modifier is Light for pre-Hardmode axes and Legendary for Hardmode axes. Exceptions are the Meteor Hamaxe, which has the same speed with the Legendary modifier as with the Light modifier, and the Shroomite Digging Claw, which will cut down faster when reforged to Light.

Types

There are 31 different types of axes, 17 of which are Hardmode-exclusive.

Axe power

Axe power primarily dictates how many hits it takes for an axe or chainsaw to destroy a tree or cactus. As a secondary effect, it influences the amount of Wood or Glowing Mushrooms that are dropped upon the destruction of most tree types.

Chopping efficiency

All tree and cactus tiles have 100 hit points each. A tree or cactus tile is destroyed (along with the rest of the plant that is above it) when its hit points are reduced to 0 or below. Hitting a tree or cactus tile with an axe or chainsaw reduces its hit points as follows:[1]

  • For trees of all types (including Giant Glowing Mushrooms): Axe power multiplied by 24, rounded down.
  • For cacti: Axe power multiplied by 72, rounded down.

Examples:

Lead AxeLead Axe(50% axe power)
Plant Damage per hit Hits until destroyed
TreeTree [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor 50\% \times 24 \right\rfloor = 12 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 12 \right\rceil = 9 }[/math]
CactusCactus [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor 50\% \times 72 \right\rfloor = 36 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 36 \right\rceil = 3 }[/math]
Molten HamaxeMolten Hamaxe(150% axe power)
Plant Damage per hit Hits until destroyed
TreeTree [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor 150\% \times 24 \right\rfloor = 36 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 36 \right\rceil = 3 }[/math]
CactusCactus [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor 150\% \times 72 \right\rfloor = 108 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 108 \right\rceil = 1 }[/math]

Secret world seeds

In For the worthy and Get fixed boi worlds, the amount of damage dealt to both trees and cacti is further multiplied by 1.3 and then rounded down again. As a result, axes with low axe power are significantly more efficient than in regular worlds.

Examples:

Lead AxeLead Axe(50% axe power)
Plant Damage per hit Hits until destroyed
TreeTree [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor \left\lfloor 50\% \times 24 \right\rfloor \times 1.3 \right\rfloor = 15 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 15 \right\rceil = 7 }[/math]
CactusCactus [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor \left\lfloor 50\% \times 72 \right\rfloor \times 1.3 \right\rfloor = 46 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 46 \right\rceil = 3 }[/math]
Molten HamaxeMolten Hamaxe(150% axe power)

TreeTree [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor \left\lfloor 150\% \times 24 \right\rfloor \times 1.3 \right\rfloor = 46 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 46 \right\rceil = 3 }[/math]
CactusCactus [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor \left\lfloor 150\% \times 72 \right\rfloor \times 1.3 \right\rfloor = 140 }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lceil 100 / 140 \right\rceil = 1 }[/math]

Wood yield

Trees normally drop one unit of their respective Wood per tile, including branches (except for surface Giant Glowing Mushrooms, which only have a 1/2 (50%) chance per tile to drop one Glowing Mushroom). Depending on the axe power of the axe used to chop down the tree, there are two chances to increase this number to 2:[2]

  • First, there is a chance equal to the axe power divided by 5 to increase the drop amount to 2 per tile. For example, with a Lead Axe (50% axe power) this chance is 10%.
  • If this first attempt was unsuccessful, there is another chance of 1/3 (33.33%) to increase the drop amount to 2 per tile.

This mechanic is applied when chopping Forest trees, Vanity trees, Boreal trees, Mahogany trees, Ebonwood/Shadewood trees, Ash trees, Pearlwood trees, and surface Giant Glowing Mushrooms. It does not apply to Palm trees (including their evil biome and Hallowed variants), underground Giant Glowing Mushrooms, and gem trees – the yield of these tree types is unaffected by axe power.

Moreover, this mechanic is also applied when destroying trees by other means apart from using an axe, such as explosives or lava. In this case, the axe power of the item held by the player at the time of the tree's destruction is used for the calculation. For example, the player can plant a Bomb near a tree and then quickly switch to their Platinum Axe to ensure its 60% axe power is used for calculating the Wood drop amount when the Bomb detonates. Items with no axe power are simply treated as having 0% axe power, i.e. there is a single 1/3 (33.33%) chance to increase the drop amount to 2 if the player is holding a non-axe item when the tree is destroyed.

In multiplayer, the held item of the player closest to each tree tile is considered for calculating the Wood drop amount of that tree tile. For example, the range boost of the Luminite Hamaxes allows chopping trees from quite far away. If there is another player closer to the tree when it is cut down, that player's held item is used for the calculation instead of the Luminite Hamaxe of the player who cut down the tree. This happens regardless of whether they are holding an axe at that moment (whose axe power is then used for the calculation) or not (in which case 0% axe power is used for the calculation).

Calculation

The combined chance of the two attempts to increase the drop amount to 2 described above can be expressed with the following formula:[3]

[math]\displaystyle{ \text{chance} = \frac{\text{axe power} + 250\%}{750\%} }[/math]

To calculate the average amount of dropped Wood per tree tile, add 1 to the formula and treat axe power as a decimal (e.g. 50% axe power as 0.5, 125% axe power as 1.25):

[math]\displaystyle{ \text{avg. drops} = 1 + \frac{\text{axe power} + 2.5}{7.5} }[/math]

Divide the result by 2 for surface Giant Glowing Mushrooms (since they only have a 1/2 (50%) chance to drop a Glowing Mushroom in the first place).

Examples:

  • The Lead Axe has an axe power of 50%.
    • Cutting down a tree with it grants a chance of 40% per tile to increase the Wood drop amount to 2: [math]\displaystyle{ \frac{ 50 \% + 250\%}{750\%} = 40 \% }[/math]
    • Using a Lead Axe yields an average of 1.4 Wood per tree tile: [math]\displaystyle{ 1 + \frac{ 0.5 + 2.5}{7.5} = 1.4 }[/math]
  • The Molten Hamaxe has an axe power of 150%.
    • Cutting down a tree with it grants a chance of 53.33% per tile to increase the Wood drop amount to 2: [math]\displaystyle{ \frac{ 150 \% + 250\%}{750\%} = 53.33 \% }[/math]
    • Using a Molten Hamaxe yields an average of 1.53 Wood per tree tile: [math]\displaystyle{ 1 + \frac{ 1.5 + 2.5}{7.5} = 1.53 }[/math]
