Yo ho ho and a bottle of....blinkroots!

Emote Town Pirate.gif The Pirate

Blinkroot is a type of herb that appears as stems with glowing dots. It grows naturally on Dirt or Mud Blocks, regardless of lighting or elevation, as long as the blocks bear no grass of any kind. Blinkroot can be harvested with virtually any weapon or tool, and can be planted manually using Blinkroot Seeds in Clay Pots and Planter Boxes(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), or on suitable soil tiles.

Blinkroot enters and exits its bloom state randomly. Its blooming is indicated by the yellow dots and pulsating yellow light emitted. Harvesting blooming Blinkroot yields 1 Blinkroot item and 1–3 Blinkroot Seeds. Harvesting mature or blooming Blinkroot with the Staff of Regrowth or Axe of Regrowth(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) yields 1–2 Blinkroots and 1–5 Blinkroot Seeds instead. Note that these tools can only directly harvest mature stage herbs planted on soil; see Herbs § Growth for details.

Both Blinkroot and Blinkroot Seeds have a chance to be obtained from the Herb Bag(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

Notes

  • If the Dirt Block that the Blinkroot is planted on turns into a grass block, the Blinkroot will break, dropping as an item.
  • Blinkroots grow slightly faster when placed below surface.[1]

Tips

  • Blinkroots are most commonly found in the Underground layer and below, due to the general lack of grass in those areas.
  • Due to its random blooming behavior, mass farming methods may be less feasible with this herb. Each mass harvest would need to be triggered manually based on a visual inspection of how much of the crop is currently in-bloom, to ensure enough seeds drop for replanting.
  • Due to its blinking nature, it can be useful for finding unexplored cave systems through its visibility beyond the walls that the player has already discovered.

Trivia

  • Blinkroot is the fastest-growing herb in the game, capable of being harvested within seconds of planting.
  • The Party Girl NPC mentions Blinkroot in one of her quotes: "We should set up a blinkroot party, and we should also set up an after-party."
  • Similarly, the Pirate NPC will occasionally reference Blinkroots, saying: "Yo ho ho and a bottle of....blinkroots!". This is a play on the original expression often attributed to pirates, "Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!"
