Sand Sharks are Hardmode enemies only found in Desert biomes during a Sandstorm. They are able to "swim" through all varieties of Sand, Hardened Sand, and Sandstone Blocks, but will collide normally against any other block. When they draw near a player, they will lunge out of the sand to attack.

The Sand Shark itself only appears in ordinary Deserts. There are other variants for different versions of the Desert:

Notes

  • Similar to the many colors of Gel, the color of the Shark Fins dropped by Sand Sharks ( Sand Shark Fins.png ) are different from those dropped by regular Sharks ( Shark Fin.png ), but they are all the same item and stack together in the inventory.
  • If a Sand Shark or any of its variants enters water, it will behave like a normal Shark.
  • Sand Sharks will spawn so long as there is sand 5 blocks deep in the Desert.

Tips

  • When creating an isolated spawning area for biome-specific Sand Shark variants, the sand should ideally be boxed in with solid non-sand blocks so the Sand Sharks cannot easily escape.

Trivia

  • Cenx confirmed that the inspiration for the enemy was a joke with Safemanda's daughter.[1][2][3]
  • The sound Sand Sharks and their variants make when jumping is also used by the Vampire, as its idle sound.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Sand Sharks: "In ancient times, a saltwater river once ran through the desert. These powerful creatures evolved to survive in the now dry sand."
