Bookcases are a type of furniture and crafting station used for the crafting of three Hardmode magic weapons: the Crystal Storm, Cursed Flames, and Golden Shower. Bookcases also fulfill a house's flat surface item requirement.

There is a total of 44 types of Bookcases: 38 craftable Bookcases, and 6 looted from the environment: one from the Underworld, four from the Dungeon, and one from the Pirate Invasion. Some bookcases can also be found in Underground Cabins; their style follows the theme of the cabin where they are found.

Trivia

  • The Bookcase actually shows 13 books stored, similar to how a placed book shows 2-3 books.
  • Although it is not required to make it, the Water Bolt's unique sprite is visible in most bookcases (a blue book with a white/brown band).
    • The Shadewood Bookcase appears to have two Water Bolts while the Boreal Wood Bookcase appears to have three.
  • The Boreal Wood Bookcase, the Slime Bookcase, and the Crystal Bookcase are the only three to have horizontally placed books, being the only display of books that way in the game.
  • The Sandstone Bookcase appears to contain scrolls rather than books, probably because it is ancient-themed.
  • Despite Cactus and Living Wood Bookcases having no visible top surfaces, objects can still be placed on top of them, in some cases appearing to float in midair.
  • The Shadewood, Martian, Slime, and Dynasty are the only bookcases to show more than two rows of books.

  • Desktop 1.4.0.1:
    • Skyware Bookcase item and placed sprites updated.
    • Spider, Lesion, Sandstone, Bamboo, Nebula, Solar, Stardust, Vortex Bookcases added.
    • Cactus and Pumpkin Bookcases are now craftable with a Sawmill.
  • Desktop 1.2.4: Palm Wood, Mushroom, Boreal Wood, Slime and Pumpkin Bookcases added.
  • Desktop 1.2.3: Added more variations made at new crafting stations.
