What exactly are Undead Enemy NPCs?

Besides apparent theming on the enemies, is there really any in-game mechanic or hidden value that groups these NPCs together as Undead to warrant a category? As examples, why are not Mummies considered Undead, despite their theme and being directly addressed as undead by the game's bestiary entry? The icy Merman is also stated to be undead by the bestiary, yet it's not in the category. Conversely, why is the swamp Thing is considered undead, when nothing in-game states that, other than making the same death sound as the zombie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TurtleSnake (talkcontribs) at 05:55, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

You're right, I can't see any particular trait shared by the enemies in this category either, unlike the other handful of enemy categories, which do have clear defining characteristics. If we went by the Bestiary, then only a few enemies mentioned there as being "undead" would remain, and it wouldn't be a very strong connection between them. Using the Bestiary as a basis for such a categorization would also set a precedent for even more dubious categorizations, like where it calls enemies "hunters" (Wolf, Zombie, Giant Flying Fox, Alien Hornet) or "elite units" (Armored Viking, ranger skeletons in the post-Plantera Dungeon, Ray Gunner, Red Devil) or other creative things. It seems to me the logical conclusion is to get rid of this category altogether, no? --Rye Greenwood (talk) 13:59, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
