The Chain Gun attacking Target Dummies. Notice how the bullet spread varies.

The Chain Gun is a Hardmode, post-Plantera gun which fires bullets in random directions over a wide spread, similar to the Gatligator. Its use time of 4 makes it the fastest weapon in Terraria, and it has a 50% chance not to consume ammunition. The Chain Gun is dropped by Santa-NK1 during the Frost Moon event with a 6.25%–16.67% / 12.5%–50% chance depending on the current wave.[1]

Its best modifier is Rapid. However, Godly may be preferred to save ammo. Due to its low use time, it can only gain modifiers that give a speed boost of 15%, thus it cannot have the Unreal modifier.

Tips

  • Chlorophyte Bullets pair well with the Chain Gun, as their homing ability negates the gun's singular weakness of accuracy.
    • Note that it may cause framerate drops on low-end computers, due to its streak effect.
  • Crystal Bullets also can deal large amounts of damage to larger, stationary enemies and bosses such as Golem.
  • With the Rapid or Frenzying modifier, the Chain Gun will gain 25% speed. This happens due to rounding down its already exceptionally low use time (4 to 3). The Godly modifier is better for players preferring to save ammo, at the cost of slightly less damage. DPS for Godly: DPS=(36+bullet-roundup(def/2))*60/4*1.09. The DPS for Rapid: DPS=(31+bullet-roundup(def/2))*60/3*1.04.
  • Because of its extremely high rate of fire, the Endless Musket Pouch should be used in regular combat to save more valuable shots for important boss fights.
    • This is made especially evident when considering that firing at 15 shots per second means that even 999 bullets at 50% ammo conservation will still be entirely used, on average, within 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Considering a stack of Chlorophyte Bullets needs (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 17 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 15 Chlorophyte Bars, this could be seen as very expensive and impractical or not a full return on investment in terms of time spent obtaining the ammo compared to time utilizing the ammo.

Trivia

  • The gun appears to be a miniature version of Santa-NK1's arm.
  • The Chain Gun fires 3 more shots per second than the S.D.M.G. with no speed modifiers.
    • The Chain Gun fires 15 shots/second which translates to 900 shots/minute.
  • The Chain Gun is one of the 11 guns in Terraria based on a real gun, the others being the Flintlock Pistol, Handgun, Musket, Quad-Barrel Shotgun(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Red Ryder(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions), Revolver(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions), Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, Tactical Shotgun, and Uzi.
    • Despite its name, the Chain Gun is not actually a chain gun, but a rotary cannon due to the fact that it possesses multiple barrels in a presumably Gatling-style configuration. It still being referred to as a chain gun despite this fact could make it a reference to the Chaingun from the video game series Doom, which is also not an actual chain gun.
