Chests
“I hear there's a secret treasure... oh never mind.
—
The Merchant
Chests are storage items that each hold up to (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 40 /
20 item stacks in rows of
10×4 /
8×5 /
5×8 /
5×4. Chests can be broken with any pickaxe or drill, but only when empty. It is impossible to destroy the blocks underneath a placed Chest.
In addition to being craftable, a number of Chests are created during world generation, and placed in random map locations. The loot contained in these Chests is determined during world generation, and will not change if the world enters Hardmode.
There are 20 varieties of naturally-occurring Chests (15 of which cannot be crafted) and 27 craftable ones, plus the Barrel and Trash Can, for a total of 42 Chest types and 44 placed storage items overall (besides Dressers and portable storage items).
There is a maximum limit of (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 8000 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1000 placed storage items in each world (excluding portable storage like the Safe, Piggy Bank, Void Vault(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Defender's Forge(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), as well as showcase items like the Item Frame, Weapon Rack, and Mannequin). Attempts to place additional storage items beyond the max will result in a dropped item, rather than placement.
On the Desktop,
Console,
Old-gen console, and
Mobile versions, placed Chests can be renamed (
20 /
29 /
63 characters max). Hovering the cursor over a renamed Chest will show its name. If the Chest has not been renamed, no name will display. To rename a Chest, first open it via ⚷ Open / Activate. The default Chest name reflects the Chest type (e.g. a Living Wood Chest has the default name "Living Wood Chest"). Select "Rename" and enter a new name. Press ↵ Enter or press "Save" when finished. Chest names can also use the same text formatting as Announcement Boxes and chat messages.
On the Desktop,
Console, and
Mobile, some types of Chests can be locked by the player using a Chest Lock. When doing so, they will require a key to open again.

Note:
- A Chest can only contain one type of bar, and only the types of which the ore is generated naturally in the world.
- The column Chance is the probability of the items to be contained in the chest. The quantity of some specific items is not uniformly distributed.
- Secondary items are generated in the order shown in the table, so their relative order in the chest is the same as in the table above.
Underground loot
This content is transcluded from Gold Chest § Loot. The loot for any given chest is determined by the location in which it is found. Each chest contains a single primary item and an assortment of randomly chosen common items. The primary item is first placed in the chest, then each "set" of common items is checked to see whether or not it will be added. If a set is chosen to be added, a single item from the list is added to the chest.
Sets are displayed in the list below divided by horizontal borders. For example, the Wooden Arrow and the Shuriken both reside in the same set, so they will never both appear in the same chest.
Underground
- If a chest contains a Flare Gun, it also contains Flares.
- The bars it contains will depend on the ore types available in the current world.

Cavern
- Gold Chests that spawn within 250 blocks of the bottom of the world will generate the same common items as Shadow Chests.
- The Lava Charm has a lower spawn chance than other primary items, at 5%, (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and can only be found in areas where lava starts appearing in a normal Cavern biome.
- The Extractinator similarly has only a 5% chance, though it can spawn in any Gold Chest.
- If a chest contains a Flare Gun, it also contains Flares.
- The bars it contains will depend on the ore types available in the current world.

Notes
- On the
Old-gen console version, Chests will gain a yellow outline upon getting close to them to signify they are within range to be opened.
- On the
Wii U version, when renaming a Chest, the text box will resemble the options on the last NPC spoken to.
Tips
- Before opening a Chest outside of a Dungeon in a Hardmode world, it would be advisable to shoot it with a ranged weapon or summon a minion, because the Chest might really be a Mimic. If it is, it will take damage and start chasing the player.
- As Chests are placed furniture items, while Mimics are spawned entities, the player may also view how the Chest is placed in order to distinguish one from the other. If it appears to be positioned off-grid, or partly suspended above the ground, it is in fact a Mimic, as its spawn does not snap it into the grid like placed Chests are.
Trivia
- The pirates' Golden Chest and Golden Dresser, along with the Money Trough(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), are the only storage items dropped by an enemy.
- The Golf Chest(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is the only natural Chest in the game that can be bought (aside from portable storage items).
- Due to the mechanics of random number generators, it is possible for a world to generate without a specific loot. However, this is very rare, because there are many Chests in a world, and even if treasure is not generated naturally, it can still be obtained by fishing for crates.
