Chlorophyte Ore is a Hardmode ore found in the Underground Jungle that is used to craft Chlorophyte Bars. When Hardmode starts, Mud Blocks located near Jungle grass blocks (i.e., most often only in the Underground Jungle) will begin to convert themselves into Chlorophyte Ore. A pickaxe or drill with at least 200% pickaxe power is required to mine it, meaning it requires the Pickaxe Axe or Drax at the very least, whose materials require defeating all three mechanical bosses (although on 3DS, the Drax can sometimes be found in Shadow Chests).
Chlorophyte Ore will slowly spread itself by converting adjacent Mud and Jungle grass blocks into more Chlorophyte Ore, growing to large deposits over time. Chlorophyte Bricks also have the ability to spread Chlorophyte Ore. This growing feature allows Chlorophyte Ore to be "replanted" and artificially seeded for a nearly renewable source of Chlorophyte. On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, Chlorophyte will also attempt to spread by converting nearby Dirt Blocks to Mud, as well as blocks of Corrupt, Crimson, Hallowed, and regular grass to Jungle grass.
Chlorophyte Ore can only spread and convert blocks if it is in or below the bottom half of the Underground layer (in a regular world). It can only spread itself to directly adjacent tiles (and only if there is not too much Chlorophyte nearby already) and can only convert tiles up to five tiles away.

Notes
- Chlorophyte will only spread in a Hardmode world.
- Chlorophyte Ore can spread to hammered, actuated, and painted blocks. This will cause the ore to be hammered, actuated, or painted too.
- Chlorophyte Ore's spread mechanics grant the Underground Jungle some resistance against The Corruption and The Crimson's destructive effects, especially on Desktop, Console, and Mobile (where it can revert Dirt to Mud and evil grass to Jungle grass). However, these biomes will still spread through Stone Blocks, and more importantly, on Old-gen console and 3DS, Chlorophyte Ore will not regrow or convert other Jungle features such as grass or trees.
- Despite being mud-based, Chlorophyte Ore cannot convert Mushroom grass blocks.
- Despite its tooltip and achievement, it does not need light to grow. However, it does slightly glow green when exposed to light.
- Chlorophyte Ore and Chlorophyte Bricks restrict the spread of the evil biomes around them.[1] See biome spread for further information.
Technical details
For the natural spawning of a new deposit of Chlorophyte Ore, every block of Jungle grass in the lower half of the Underground layer or below[a] periodically has a chance to convert a random Mud Block into Chlorophyte Ore, given the following criteria:[2]
- The random Mud Block is within an 11×11-tile rectangular area centered on the Jungle grass block. In other words, a Mud Block can only turn into a new deposit of Chlorophyte Ore if there is at least one block of Jungle grass within 5 tiles (horizontally and vertically) of it.
- There is no tree, Plantera's Bulb, or Life Fruit directly above the random Mud Block.
- There is not too much Chlorophyte nearby the random Mud Block.
When a new block of Chlorophyte Ore is to be created naturally, either for a new deposit from a Jungle grass block or for spreading an existing vein, the amount of Chlorophyte Ore nearby is checked. The new block will not be created if too much Chlorophyte is already present in the vicinity, to ensure that it does not completely overtake the Underground Jungle. This process consists of two checks. In each check, the game scans a rectangular area centered on the reference tile[b] for existing Chlorophyte Ore blocks. If the number of Chlorophyte Ore in this rectangle does not exceed a certain limit, then the check is considered "passed". Both checks must pass in order for the new Chlorophyte Ore to be created.[3] The limit and rectangle size are lower in the Cavern layer and in the Underworld, causing Chlorophyte Ore to potentially spawn and spread faster there.

Tips
- A Spelunker Potion can be used to find Chlorophyte faster.
- When mining for Chlorophyte, it is advisable to avoid smaller clusters of the ore. Leaving them to grow will result in a steady, renewable supply of Chlorophyte in the long term. When mining big veins, it is advised to keep 1–2 Chlorophyte not mined so it can regrow to more Chlorophyte.
- Selling the bar rather than the ore yields (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 15 SC / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 87 SC more than the components per bar.
Trivia
- The name Chlorophyte is derived from chlorophyll, the color pigment responsible for photosynthesis, plus the common rock suffix -ite.
- The prefix chloro- means green, while the suffix -phyte means plant; so "chlorophyte" translates to "green plant".
- Chlorophyte Ore is completely renewable on Desktop, Console, and Mobile due to the fact that Dirt Bombs allow the duplication of Dirt Blocks, and that Stone and Wood Blocks can be Shimmered into dirt (and, therefore, Mud Blocks).
- Chlorophyta is a division of green algae, informally called chlorophytes.
- Its appearance when placed seems to resemble some plant cells.
History
- Desktop 1.4.4: Infection protection is now slightly stronger. It can also purify a wider selection of infected tiles, such as Sand and Sandstone.
- Desktop 1.4.0.1:
- Increased the sell value from 6 SC to 15 SC.
- Sprite updated.
- Desktop 1.2.3: Increased stack limit from 99 to 999, but is now rarer and grows slower.
- Desktop 1.2.0.2:
- Can no longer be mined by explosives.
- Can no longer be mined with the Chlorophyte Drill, whose pickaxe power has been reduced from 210% to 190%.

- When spawning a new deposit, the reference tile is the random Mud Block which is to be turned into Chlorophyte Ore.
- When spreading from an existing block of Chlorophyte Ore or Brick, the reference tile is that existing ore or brick.
