Thanks again for freeing me from my curse. Felt like something jumped up and bit me.

— The Clothier

The Clothier is an NPC vendor who sells mainly vanity items. He will move in once the following criteria have been met:

He is the same character as the Old Man who guards the Dungeon before Skeletron is defeated. After defeating Skeletron, the Old Man is freed from his curse, and he disappears from the Dungeon's entrance. His clothes are no longer tattered, his eyes have turned blue (from red), and he is wearing a Red Hat. Equipping the Clothier Voodoo Doll allows the player to attack and kill the Clothier (similar to the Guide Voodoo Doll) with any damage-inflicting item. Doing so at night re-summons Skeletron, but killing the Clothier without the Clothier Voodoo Doll equipped (such as using Flymeal(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) on its own) will not summon the boss.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, the Clothier fires shadowflame skull projectiles to defend himself from enemies. They inflict enemies with the Shadowflame debuff for 5–10 seconds[2] and deal 16 / 24 / 28 damage at the start of the game, but as the player progresses, the Clothier will gain various stat increases.[1]

Items sold

Note: All item prices can be decreased by equipping a Discount Card or Greedy Ring(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, prices can also be higher or lower based on the NPC's happiness level.

  • Tips

    • Placing a shallow lava pit in the floor of the Clothier's house (e.g. by pouring one Lava Bucket into an 8- or 9-tile long horizontal recession of one tile height) will cause the Clothier to die and respawn often, leaving behind the Red Hat each time, which can be sold for 2 SC each.
      • However, it is more lucrative to fight Skeletron by using a Clothier Voodoo Doll to kill the Clothier at night, which causes Skeletron to spawn. Skeletron drops 5 GC when defeated, not accounting the other drops that can be sold.

    Names

The Clothier may have any of the following names:

    • Alfred
    • Arthur
    • Benjamin
    • Cedric
    • Clive
    • Cyril
    • Edgar
    • Edmund

    Trivia

    • Most of the Clothier's dialogues refer to movies starring the American actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, namely Cast Away, Forrest Gump, The Ladykillers, Apollo 13, A League of Their Own, and The Polar Express.
    • One of possible names for the Clothier is James. This is a reference to Terraria YouTuber James Benett, who is better known as ChippyGaming and uses the Clothier as his avatar.
    • The Clothier appears to want to eat the Truffle. This can be seen in the Truffle's quote, "Everyone in this town feels a bit off. I woke up to the clothier chewing on my foot last night." and the Clothier's quote, "I'll give you a discount on your wears if you can convince <name of Truffle> to come over for a...sizing."
      • This is further confirmed by the Clothier loving to live near the Truffle, while the Truffle dislikes being a neighbor of the Clothier.
      • Since NPCs charge lower prices when NPC's they like are nearby, this means the Clothier will keep his promise if the player follows through with his request.
    • The quote "I keep having vague memories of tying up a woman and throwing her in a dungeon." is a reference to the fact that the Bound Mechanic is found in the Dungeon. This implies that he, while possessed by Skeletron, was responsible for the act.
      • This is further confirmed by the Clothier's confused hatred of the Mechanic with him having very little memory of what happened before.
    • The quote "That Red Hat of yours looks familiar..." is a reference to player murdering him for the hat, as that is the only way to obtain it legitimately. Additionally, this quote will always override all others as long as the hat is on.
      • This may also suggest that the Clothier may have an awareness of his previous self, as he is 1 of the only 2 NPCs to say something like that, the other being the Guide with the line "I wonder why my predecessor spontaneously burst into flames. Hopefully it doesn't happen to me...". On a similar note, both NPCs are also the only 2 NPCs that can summon in a boss when killed and have their own Voodoo Dolls.
    • The name Pip may be a reference to Philip Pirrip, called Pip, the protagonist in the 1861 novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Pip goes through multiple different profession changes, and eventually becomes a responsible person at the end. The Clothier starting off as an old man and then turning into a man with a stable job and income may be a metaphor for what Pip had gone through in the book.
    • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Clothier: "Once trapped under a curse, the Clothier is the master of thread. If it's fashion that's desired, he's the man! He talks in a familiar way."

    History

    • Desktop 1.2.0.3: The Clothier can now be attacked with the Clothier Voodoo Doll equipped.
    • Desktop 1.2:
      • Now sells more unique vanity sets during Hardmode, as well as the Balla and Gangsta Hats.
      • Can now be killed with a Clothier Voodoo Doll to summon Skeletron at night.
    • Desktop 1.1: Now has random name given to him on spawn. His deaths will be reported with this name. Also other NPCs will use it in their quotes.
