Digtoise found in the Underground Desert.

The Digtoise is a pre-Hardmode pet-summoning item that spawns a Digtoise that follows the player. While holding the item, pressing Use / Attack causes it to roll in the direction of the cursor. Upon contact with a block, it will start mining in that direction (either vertically or horizontally) 3 blocks at a time, with a pickaxe power equivalent to 26% (lower than any pickaxe) and mining speed of 20.[1] When digging horizontally, it can pass over a one-tile gap, but a gap of two or more tiles will cause it to stop. It is also capable of digging through liquids. Like other Pals, it can only be summoned once and it can be petted using Open / Activate.

The Digtoise is rarely found as "Sleeping Digtoise", a solid object in the Underground Desert. The Sleeping Digtoise has a 1/30 (3.33%) chance to replace Antlion Eggs during world generation,[2] and has a 1/100 (1%) chance to replace Antlion Eggs when they regrow.[3]

Used by tools

Digtoise can be used by the Rubblemaker to put themselves back in a placed state:

Notes

  • Using the item spawns the Digtoise on the first solid block underneath the cursor, ignoring any platforms and sloped blocks.[4]
  • A Sleeping Digtoise can appear as any of the following: Sleeping Digtoise.png
  • The Sleeping Digtoise can be detected by the Metal Detector and its upgrades and highlighted by the Spelunker buff, but not the Lifeform Analyzer or Hunter buff.
  • In Remix worlds, Digtoise will only generate in the upper 57% to 63% of the world's height, chosen randomly during generation. There are additional random variations that potentially exceed this depth range, which are not detailed here.[5]
    • When combined with No surface, this is raised to the upper 36% to 43.6%.

Tips

  • It is very helpful in creating a hellevator or any other passageway, and it can even be obtained prior to defeating any boss.
    • Digtoise is also very helpful when the Remix seed is active.
  • The Digging Molecart is a faster method of near-automatic digging of horizontal tunnels, though being more difficult to obtain.
    • However Digtoises from multiple players can stack and be used independently from mining or using Digging Molecart which allows for extremely efficient mining of large areas without use of explosives.
  • Digtoise is not affected by Shimmer, making it a risky way to find the Aether as it may tunnel straight through and dump the Shimmer below.
