The Drax is a Hardmode, post-mechanical bosses drill and axe. It is the alternative to the Pickaxe Axe, having a faster mining speed but shorter range and lacking the ability to benefit from mining speed bonuses. It can mine blocks up to Chlorophyte Ore.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Trivia

  • The name Drax is a portmanteau of drill and axe.
  • It was originally called Hamdrax, a portmanteau of the words hammer, drill, and axe, and had 85% hammer power in addition to its current abilities. Its hammer ability was removed in 1.2 when hammers were given the ability to create slopes and half-blocks, which would conflict with the Drax's mining functionality.
    • The projectile created by the drill is still named Hamdrax, which can be seen in death messages when killing another player with it in PvP.
    • Currently, only the Drill Containment Unit's summoned mount has all three abilities.
  • The original tooltip was "Not to be confused with a hamsaw", although a hamsaw (presumably a portmanteau of the words hammer and chainsaw) was never added to the game. The Picksaw and the updated tooltip were added in 1.2.
  • Unlike most drills, the Drax has a minimal amount of knockback.
