The Drill Containment Unit (sometimes abbreviated to DCU) is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord mount-summoning item that summons a Drill Mount, a rideable, flying vehicle that mines tiles extremely quickly via a stream of blue lasers. It can fly and hover indefinitely and has a mining range of 15 tiles.

The Drill Mount is the fastest controllable way to mine in Terraria, but it has a number of special characteristics:

  • Unlike other mounts, players cannot use any tools or weapons while riding the Drill Mount.
  • Unlike most other mounts, players can fly through liquids while riding the Drill Mount, though they can still drown.
  • Unlike other mining tools, the Drill Mount does not inflict damage on enemies. It also cannot mine blocks behind other blocks, rather always drilling tunnels through all blocks directly ahead of the player.
  • Mining speed bonuses do not affect Drill Mount's mining speed.

The Drill Mount flies at 41 mph vertically, 31 mph horizontally, and 51 mph diagonally. Pressing Use / Attack makes the Drill Mount mine all mineable blocks, including furniture, objects, trees, Lihzahrd Bricks, Altars (during Hardmode), and Shadow Orbs / Crimson Hearts, among others. Pressing Open / Activate makes the Drill Mount mine background walls. Holding Open / Activate and Use / Attack simultaneously will mine both blocks and walls.

Crafting the Drill Containment Unit requires a total of 160 Luminite (thus requiring defeating the Moon Lord at least twice), 600 Chlorophyte Ore, 600 Glowing Mushrooms, 20 Ectoplasm, 120 each of Hellstone and Meteorite ores, and 40 Obsidian. This also requires four different crafting stations: a Hardmode Forge for the Chlorophyte and Spectre Bars, an Autohammer for the Shroomite Bars, an Ancient Manipulator for the Luminite Bars, and a Hardmode Anvil for the Drill Containment Unit itself.

Notes

The full range of the Drill Mount.
Demonstration of the Drill Mount released by Re-Logic when it was in development.
  • The Drill Mount has 210% pickaxe power, axe power, and hammer power, allowing it to destroy every block and destroy trees in one hit. Its tool speed is 1.[1]
  • The Drill Mount leaves surrounding blocks hammered into slopes.
  • Due to the Drill Mount's ability to destroy Altars with its hammer coding, if brought to a pre-Hardmode world, trying to mine them or the blocks underneath them will result in the usual health penalty per hit.
  • Using dyes will change the color of both the Drill Mount and the lasers fired from it.
  • Similar to a chainsaw, the mount's lasers will cease functioning after 1 minute of continuous use.

Tips

  • Holding a light source like a Glowstick or Torch can improve visibility while mining.
    • The player can use a Spelunker Potion with a Torch or other light source to more easily find ores. The Spelunker Glowstick can be used to create a weaker glow effect with the benefit of being an inexhaustible option.
  • Like all mounts, using it will not remove minions. Summoners can take advantage of this to defend themselves when mining.
  • A yoyo, chainsaw, or drill can be used when riding the Drill Mount. This works when the item is already in use and the player activates the mount afterward. However, it is purposeless as the mount will be unable to mine blocks this way. In most cases, getting off the mount is a better option to deal with enemies.
  • When the Drill Mount is operating underwater, items that prevent drowning should be used.
  • Because of the automatic sloping, it can be useful for underground terraforming or making caves in maps.

Trivia

  • It has the highest monetary value of materials of any craftable item in the game, pricing at 1 PC85 GC60 SC from the bars or 1 PC54 GC from the base material (Obsidian does not have any sell value).
    • Despite this, it still only sells for 5 GC, like all mounts.
  • The Drill Mount has the longest digging range of any digging tool, matched only by the Laser Drill.
  • Re-Logic's trailer video for 1.3.0.1 shows a player using a Laser Machinegun while riding in the Drill Mount,[2] although this feature is not available in-game.
  • The Drill Containment Unit is the only mount-summoning item that is crafted.

Unused sprite Mount_Drill.png
  • The Drill Mount was originally designed to be a ground-based mount that would dig through and slope the terrain (likely in a similar fashion to the Digging Molecart, which was later introduced). Because the implementation of this concept was prone to bugs and not satisfying to use, it was changed to a flying mount.[3]
    • The sprite for that previous iteration of the mount remains in the game as Mount_Drill.png, but it is unused. It bears a strong resemblance to the Drill Mount's buff icon.
  • The mount appears to be made of Martian Plating, despite not requiring drops from the Martian Madness event to craft.
  • Despite being a post-Moon Lord item and requiring Luminite Bars, it is not crafted at the Ancient Manipulator.
