The Eater of Worlds is a pre-Hardmode Corruption-themed worm boss. It can be summoned when three Shadow Orbs are destroyed in a Corruption world, or when a player uses Worm Food anywhere in the Corruption or Underground Corruption biome.
The Eater of Worlds is not a single target, but a string of segments with individual health. It has a total of 67 / 72 segments.[1] When any inner body segment is destroyed, it splits into multiple smaller worms, each with their own head and tail. Each section of the Eater of Worlds must be killed in order to defeat the entire boss. The Eater of Worlds, like all worms, is immune to lava.
Fighting the Eater of Worlds is the only way to obtain Shadow Scales, and it is one of the only ways to obtain usable quantities of Demonite Ore. Individual segments drop some of these when killed, with a larger amount of them being dropped upon defeating the entire boss.[2] Defeating the Eater of Worlds for the first time also allows the Tavernkeep(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) NPC to spawn as the Unconscious Man, and allows meteorites to land.
The Eater of Worlds is the Corruption counterpart to the Crimson's Brain of Cthulhu. The Hardmode mechanical boss equivalent to the Eater of Worlds is The Destroyer.
While the Eater of Worlds is alive, the music Boss 1 will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 1 (Otherworldly) will play instead.

Notes
- If the player dies or leaves the Corruption, the Eater of Worlds will stop following the player and quickly go off-screen until it despawns.
- The Eater of Worlds will not despawn while the player is in the Crimson biome.
- Trying to summon the Eater of Worlds with Worm Food while another is still alive will not work and the item will not be consumed.
- Note that actually defeating the Eater of Worlds is not completely necessary to progress, as a certain amount of segments may drop the needed amount of materials.
- However, defeating the Eater of Worlds is the only way to gain access to the Tavernkeep and Meteorites.
- The different segments of the Eater of Worlds are not equivalent in stats: the head segment will deal significantly more damage than the body or tail, but also has the least defense.
- The reverse is true for its tail; it has more defense than the body or head, but also deals the least damage.
- Individual segments cannot survive on their own. Killing one segment of a part consisting of two segments will kill both segments and drop their loot.
- When the Eater of Worlds splits, newly formed worms will tend to retreat underground before attempting to attack the player.
- The Eater of Worlds spawns in a coiled state and gradually unravels before attacking the player. Attacking it with piercing weapons in this state will damage all of its segments, which can kill it in seconds.
- The Eater of Worlds only takes 65% of the usual damage from the fire projectiles of the Molotov Cocktail, and the projectiles will pierce 1 less target.[3]
Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) changes
- In Expert Mode, the Eater of Worlds moves 20% faster and accelerates over twice as fast.[4]
- The Eater of Worlds will randomly shoot Vile Spit from its head and body segments. The Vile Spit projectiles have a 1/20 (5%) chance to inflict the Weak debuff onto the player for 10 minutes but can be destroyed in a single hit from any attack or projectile.
- The Eater of Worlds takes 80% less damage from the following projectiles and explosives:[3]

Tips
- Effective weapons include piercing or area-of-effect weapons, such as the Vilethorn, Spiky Balls, whips(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and fast melee weapons, such as the Falcon Blade and the Terragrim(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
- In Classic Mode, Grenades are an effective weapon against the Eater. That is not true in higher difficulties, since the Eater gains resistance to explosives.
- Like other worm-types, once the Eater's head passes a given point, every body segment must follow. This allows the player to stand next to the body, attacking every segment as it goes by. The player should be wary of the head looping back around.
- Killing the head of the Eater of Worlds causes its speed to drastically decrease, almost to a stop.
- If possible, try to aim for the head or tail of each section, as if they die first, the Eater of Worlds will not split. Note that the head is far more vulnerable.
- If fighting in a chasm, be wary of getting surrounded, which can lead to death very quickly, especially in Expert or Master Mode. A quick way to escape is to have a Bed to teleport to (using Recall Potions or a Magic or Ice Mirror) above the battle area.
- It may be preferable to hollow out an area in the Corruption in advance, in order to avoid this situation.
- Farming the Eater of Worlds is particularly profitable, being one of the most effective ways of making money prior to Hardmode.
- Converting the Demonite Ore to bars and selling its drops will yield an average of 19 GC per kill.
- If Vile Mushrooms run short, Vile Powder (for Worm Food) can be bought from the Dryad during a Blood Moon.
- Since each segment can drop loot when killed, it can be a good source of Presents during Christmas, and Goodie Bags, Bloody Machetes, and Bladed Gloves during Halloween.
- In Hardmode, it can provide other items as well:
- It is a good way to farm for a Corruption Key, as every segment has a chance of dropping one.
- In a Corrupt Snow biome, it can drop Amaroks(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), with each selling for a base value of 4 GC.
- In a Corrupt Ocean, it can drop Pirate Maps.
- The Eater of Worlds will start to flee underground if the player leaves the Corruption biome, but will not immediately despawn. Players can utilize this mechanic to keep the Eater of Worlds away from themselves without despawning it by moving in and out of the Corruption, watching for the boss's icon on the minimap to make sure it does not leave.
- Using a flail will block any Vile Spit from hitting the player when ⚒ Use / Attack is held down. Alternatively, a whip would also work for it can sweep a large area clean of Vile Spit in a single whip.
Trivia
- The Eater of Worlds and Skeletron are the only bosses that do not have their own unique AI.
- Skeletron only shares its AI with the Dungeon Guardian.
- The Eater of Worlds might spawn outside of map boundaries on rare occasions when breaking Shadow Orbs.
- The Eater of Worlds is sometimes abbreviated as "EoW".
- With five eyes on the body segments and three eyes on the head and tail segments each, the Eater of Worlds has 331 / 356 eyes in total.
- The Eater of Worlds measures roughly 195 / 209 tiles.
- Assuming that the player is at 5′ 9″ (1.75 m) in terms of height, the Eater of Worlds would be about 124.4 yards (113.75 m) long or 133.33 yards (121.92 m) long in Expert Mode.
- The Eater of Worlds has the highest health of all pre-Hardmode bosses.
- Oddly enough, but most likely intentionally, it is not required to actually completely defeat the Eater of Worlds to get progression-locked items such as the Nightmare Pickaxe or Shadow armor, since each separate segment drops Shadow Scales.
- Because the Eater of Worlds has no more unique drops than the mask, trophy, and the Eater's Bone in Classic Mode, this can prove beneficial for players who are not strong enough to fight it yet but want better gear.
- However, in Expert Mode and above, defeating it does reward the player with the Worm Scarf.
- The ability to drop progression-locked materials is a trait shared with Brain of Cthulhu, the Crimson counterpart to this boss.
- Because the Eater of Worlds has no more unique drops than the mask, trophy, and the Eater's Bone in Classic Mode, this can prove beneficial for players who are not strong enough to fight it yet but want better gear.
– According to the Terraria lore pages, the Destroyer is a simulacrum of Cthulhu's spine. Despite the Destroyer taking heavy influence from it, the Eater of Worlds has no connection to Cthulhu and is not mentioned to be a former body part, unlike other pre-mech forms.
- According to Redigit, the Eater of Worlds is named Edward.[7] This statement was most likely a joke[8] and is not considered official lore.[9]
- The Steam Workshop page appears to show the Eater of Words with centipede-like legs rather than its usual worm-like depiction.
- Contrary to its name, the Eater of Worlds does not "consume" or destroy any blocks.
- According to the Angler, a severed piece of the Eater of Worlds fell into the water and mutated into a corrupt fish, creating the
Eater of Plankton.
- The
Bestiary entry for the Eater of Worlds: "Conceived from the bottomless malice of the Corruption, this mighty abyssal worm tunnels wildly to devour all in its path."
History
- Desktop 1.4.4:
- Restructured how Demonite Ore/Shadow Scale drops are handled in Expert and Master. Overall, the quantity of drops from segment kills has been reduced, while the amount of drops from Treasure Bags has been increased.
- In Expert Mode, the total quantity of drops is split roughly evenly, with 50% of the ore/scales coming from the partial kills and 50% coming from Treasure Bags.
- In Master Mode, the total quantity of drops is weighted heavily toward the Treasure Bag, with only 25% of the rewards coming from partial kills, and 75% coming from the Treasure Bags.
- Classic Mode drop rates and weighting has been left entirely untouched by all of these changes.
- Desktop 1.4.0.2: Defeating the Eater of Worlds now allows Meteorites to fall rather than breaking a Shadow Orb, and defeating more Eater of Worlds will increase the chance of a Meteorite falling the following night.
