Wings
“Have you seen the Wyverns soaring high up in the clouds? If only I could fly like that...

The Guide
Wings are Hardmode (with the single exception of Fledgling Wings) accessories that can allow the player to fly temporarily by pressing and holding the ↷ Jump key. Flight time is reset when the player rests on solid objects, including both standing on blocks and using climbing items like Ropes, hooks, Shoe Spikes, and Climbing Claws. Certain wing types also allow the player to hover at fixed heights by holding the ▼ Down key during flight, and/or accelerate their ascent speed by holding the ▲ Up key.
After flight time has been exhausted, a player can continue holding the ↷ Jump key to glide. Gliding fall speed can be accelerated by holding the ▼ Down key in addition.
Wings additionally grant immunity from fall damage (except when overridden by the Stoned(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) debuff), rendering fall damage protection items like the Lucky Horseshoe unnecessary.
Flight is much more controlled with wings than with Rocket Boots, Spectre Boots, etc. alone, and they allow for much greater flight range. Equipping wings generally replaces jumps entirely with flight, rather than requiring a double-jump to activate. Extra jump accessories like the Cloud in a Bottle will still grant an additional jump, which is used when the (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)↷ Jump button is released and pressed again / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions)when all flight time has run out. This can be used to instantly boost the wing to full speed upon reactivation in midair.
There are currently 47 unique wing types in total: 45 are available on Desktop,
Console, and
Mobile and 21 on
Old-gen console and
. Flight time and speed can vary by the version.
Types
Wings have a variety of origins: Some can be crafted, a few can be purchased outright, one is an Angler reward, a few are dropped directly from bosses, and one is gifted to every new Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) character or found in chests and crates.
In Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), more wings can come as part of Treasure Bags: Each Hardmode Treasure Bag has a 1/20 (5%) chance to drop a random set of developer items, and all sets include wings (with the exception of Aaron's set).
Most craftable wings are crafted at a Hardmode Anvil: Each requires 20 Souls of Flight plus a "key" item determining the wing type. This item can be a rare enemy drop with no other use, or a quantity of material representing a new stage of the game.
The four lunar wings (Solar Wings, Vortex Booster, Nebula Mantle, and Stardust Wings) are instead crafted like other endgame equipment: At the Ancient Manipulator from Luminite Bars and Lunar Fragments; they do not require Souls of Flight.
All wings can be sold for 8 GC, except for the Leaf Wings ((Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 30 GC / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 20 GC), Steampunk Wings (60 GC) and Fledgling Wings (4 SC).

All wings
- The player cannot equip more than one set of wings at a time.
- All wings work in water.
- Some jump-boost accessories stack with wings to boost flight (see table).
- When one wing type is placed in a social slot and the other in an accessory slot, the full animation of the vanity wings are shown, along with any lighting and particle effects. Flight speed and other functional characteristics follow those in the accessory slot.
- Wings can be hidden by the accessory visibility setting when equipped. However, they will only be hidden while not in the air, and always visible otherwise ((Old-gen console and 3DS versions) except when using other items that adds graphics to the player's back, like the Leaf Blower). They fold into a low-profile image when not used.
- The horizontal speed of any midair jumps (such as the Cloud in a Bottle) are greatly decreased when the player wears wings alongside them.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Wings in vanity slots do not emit light.
- Dyes can change the color of the particle effects created by wings, but cannot change the color of the light emitted by them.
Specific wings
- Fishron Wings work in lava and honey (but not Shimmer) just as they do in water, letting the player move as if they are on land. This makes them very useful for more aquatic characters.
- (Old-gen console version) Ghost Wings and Spectre Wings will only change color with the use of Black Dye, which makes them appear dark gray.

The player is jumping from the Sand into the water.
Achievements

Tips
- An Ice Rod can be used to lay blocks of ice to land in midair, making it possible to remain in the air indefinitely.
- The Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)-exclusive Soaring Insignia enables infinite flight.
- The slow-fall effect of Featherfall Potion or an Umbrella stacks with wing glide, allowing for very long glides after flight time has been exhausted.
- The maximum flight distance of about 1400 tiles can be achieved using the Bundle of Balloons, Frog Leg, Solar Wings(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Frostspark Boots, Flying Carpet, and Featherfall Potion. More can be achieved by using the Umbrella in addition.
- The Soaring Insignia negates the low flight time of the Jetpack, allowing the player to take full advantage of its quick vertical acceleration.
- Obtaining wings in early Hardmode:
- Harpy Wings require a bit of luck when farming Harpies. Fortunately, Wyverns spawn at the same altitude, so when a Giant Harpy Feather drops, the odds are good that 20 Souls of Flight will already have been collected. The Giant Harpy Feather can also be collected before activating Hardmode.
- Angel and Demon Wings require (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 15 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 25 of either Soul of Light or Soul of Night. The souls can easily be acquired by staying long enough in Underground Hallow or Underground Corruption/Underground Crimson, since all enemies killed have a chance to drop the respective biome's soul.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Fledgling Wings can be obtained pre-Hardmode, however they lack in mobility compared to Hardmode wings.
Trivia
- The Fledgling Wings are the only wings with the
rarity.
- Dyeing Red's Wings in combination with Hermes Boots or any of its upgrades will change the color of the smoke below the player.
- Prior to 1.3.0.1(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Red's Wings would allow the wearer to fly infinitely and faster than any other wings if the player managed to obtain them through inventory editors.
- Ghostar's Infinity Eight's name comes from the Infinity Eight in the series of single-player action role-playing games .hack//G.U.. Their appearance resembles the sword-wings of the Avatar Skeith in its Xth Form. Its tooltip, "I am right here," is used throughout the .hack//G.U. games.
- Despite being non-moving constructs of technology, Ghostar's Infinity Eight and Arkhalis' Lightwings both produce flapping noises.
