This article is about the post-Plantera boss. For other uses, see Golem (disambiguation).

Golem is a Hardmode, post-Plantera boss fought in the Jungle Temple. It attacks the player by stomping on them, launching its fists, and firing barrages of projectiles. Defeating Golem is a prerequisite for the Lunar Events, the Martian Madness, and Tier 3 of the Old One's Army.

While Golem is alive, the music Golem will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 2 (Otherworldly) will play instead.

Summoning

Golem is summoned by using a Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Lihzahrd Altar (located in the final chamber of the Jungle Temple), at any time, and only after Plantera has been defeated. Upon pressing Open / Activate on the Lihzahrd Altar, one Lihzahrd Power Cell is consumed from the player's inventory and Golem is summoned directly above the altar.

Behavior

Golem consists of four parts: the body, the head attached to the body, and one fist at the end of both of its arms. The body is invincible initially and the head must be defeated in order to damage the body; defeating the body concludes the boss fight. It is not required to defeat the two fists, similar to Skeletron's hands.

First form

Golem continually jumps into the air and endeavors to land on top of the player, with a short cooldown after each jump. When the line of sight between the player and Golem's body is blocked by solid blocks, it will leap onto the player, allowing it to pass through all solid blocks (similar to the behavior of a Biome Mimic).

Golem periodically launches its fists that extend from chains at the player. The fists can travel through solid blocks but have a limited range, and glow bright orange shortly before being launched. A fist is launched more frequently as its health is decreased. Defeating a fist causes Golem to jump around more often, which compounds when both fists are destroyed.

Golem's head shoots ricocheting fireballs from its mouth which have a 1/2 (50%) chance of inflicting the On Fire! debuff for 5–7 / 10–14 / 15–21 seconds. When the head falls below half health (12,500 / 18,750 / 23,906 HP), its eyes begin to fire yellow lasers called Eye Beams at the player that can travel through blocks. Golem's head faces towards the side that the player is on (for instance, facing left if the player is to the left of the head). Only one of Golem's eyes will fire an Eye Beam if the head is facing left or right, but if the player is horizontally aligned with the head, it will look straight ahead and fire two Eye Beams at once in this case, one from each eye.

When the head is below half health (as indicated by it shooting Eye Beams), the damage of the fireballs is increased from 36 / 72 / 108 to 48 / 96 / 144. Additionally, they are fired more frequently as Golem's head takes more damage:

Golem Head health Fireball cooldown
≥ 40% [a] 5 seconds
≥ 20% [b] 2.5 seconds
< 20% 1.67 seconds

Unlike the fireballs, the Eye Beams are not fired in regular intervals. Their cooldown is randomized instead, although it always lasts a certain minimum amount of time. This minimum cooldown is 1 second initially and decreases with the remaining health of Golem's head, down to 0.25 seconds at less than 20% HP. Furthermore, the cooldown is approximately halved while the line of sight between the player and the center of Golem's head is obstructed by solid blocks.

The cooldowns of the fireballs and Eye Beams are even lower in multiplayer, depending on the number of players on the server.

Second form

Once the health of Golem's stone head is depleted, it detaches from its body, becomes immune to damage, and begins hovering above the player while passing through blocks. Golem's body now becomes the main target. Similar to before, the head continues firing projectiles (though it now always fires two Eye Beams at once), the body continues jumping around (now faster, and speeding up as its health is decreased), and the fists continue attacking the player if they have not been destroyed (now more frequently). The body's health must be completely depleted, at which point the invincible head is also destroyed and the fight ends.

Again, the frequency of fireballs fired from the head increases as Golem's body takes more damage:

Golem Body health Fireball cooldown
≥ 80% [c] 5 seconds
≥ 60% [d] 2.5 seconds
≥ 20% [e] 1.67 seconds
≥ 10% [f] 1.25 seconds
< 10% 1 second

Reducing Golem's body's health decreases the cooldown of the Eye Beams as well, and increases their damage and velocity:

Golem Body health Eye Beam damage Eye Beam velocity
≥ 50% [g] 48 / 96 / 144 56 mph
≥ 40% [h] 50 / 100 / 150 58 mph
≥ 30% [i] 52 / 104 / 156 59 mph
≥ 20% [j] 54 / 108 / 162 60 mph
≥ 10% [k] 56 / 112 / 168 61 mph
< 10% 58 / 116 / 174 63 mph

A blocked line of sight increases the Eye Beam's damage by 50% and their velocity by 150%.

Enraged behavior

Golem becomes "enraged" if it has to follow the player outside of the Underground Jungle, either through being led or summoned outside of it. This causes Golem to jump around faster and, if its head is below half health, it will fire its Eye Beams faster. However, it does not boost the boss's damage or defense. Golem will return to its normal behavior if returned to the Underground Jungle.

Unlike Plantera, Golem's enraged behavior is not noticeable until reaching the end of its first form, when it begins jumping around and firing Eye Beams at a faster rate. Furthermore, the difference between his enraged and normal behavior will not be noticeable to most players without deliberately switching between the two.

Aftermath

Desktop versionConsole versionMobile version
Desktop/Console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.

Once Golem is defeated:

Notes

  • Like most bosses, Golem will despawn if the player travels too far away, including traveling back through the Lihzahrd Temple.
  • Golem's map icon maps its head, not its core, so when the head flies off, the map icon follows it.
  • Golem's fist attack will only fire at the player when they are between the two fists or to the same side as the fist. A fist will not cross Golem to strike a player, even if the other fist has been destroyed. However, if the player is above or below Golem using wings, grappling hooks, platforms, etc., both fists will fire at the player.
  • If the head chases a player too far away, the body despawns and the head will explode. In this case, no drops will be obtained and the game does not register Golem's defeat, forcing a second fight to progress the game.
  • Unlike most bosses, Golem is affected by the low gravity in the Space biome. As a result, its jump attack will rise much higher (often off the top of the screen) and take longer to land.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Golem, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Golem strategies.
  • In some cases, the terrain surrounding the Lihzahrd Altar will cause Golem to get stuck when it spawns. It can attack with its fists and projectiles but will be unable to jump around. Players can also recreate this condition by placing blocks near the altar.
  • The three Lihzahrd Bricks under the Lihzahrd Altar cannot be actuated, hence it is impossible to relocate the altar prior to defeating Golem for the first time.

Trivia

Gore 361.png
Golem's gore of a Lihzahrd Brick-themed sun with a frowning face.
  • In Jewish folklore, a golem (/ˈɡoʊləm/, GOH-ləm, Hebrew: ‎גּוֹלֶם) is an animated anthropomorphic being that is created entirely from inanimate matter (usually clay or mud). The word was used to mean an amorphous, unformed material in Psalms and medieval writing.
  • In Golem's first form, its head appears looser the more its health gets lowered, bouncing on its own whenever Golem jumps.
  • The gore sprite of the Lihzahrd Brick-themed sun symbol seen on its body has a sad, frowning face.
  • Assuming that the player is at 5′ 9″ (1.75 m) in terms of height, Golem would be about 24′ 11″ (7.59 m) tall. Its head alone would be about 12′ 8″ (3.86 m) tall.
  • Despite the sprite update in 1.4.0.1, Golem's achievement icon and gore sprites were not updated.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Golem: "A remarkable display of ingenuity constructed by the Lihzahrd clan. Powered by solar energy cells, it is ready to guard the Temple."
