This article is about the post-Plantera boss. For the enemy in Granite Caves, see Granite Golem. For the rare, resilient enemy from the Snow biome, see Ice Golem. For the Hardmode enemy in the Cavern layer, see Rock Golem.

Golem is a Hardmode, post-Plantera boss found in the Jungle Temple.

While Golem is alive, the music Golem will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 2 (Otherworldly) will play instead.

Summoning

Golem is summoned by using the Open / Activate key on the Lihzahrd Altar, located in the Jungle Temple's final, largest chamber, while at least one Lihzahrd Power Cell is in the player's inventory. One Lihzahrd Power Cell is contained within each of the Jungle Temple's Lihzahrd Chests, and they can also be dropped rarely by Lihzahrds or Flying Snakes with a 1/50 (2%) chance. Golem spawns directly above the Altar. Plantera must have already been defeated at least once in the current world in order for Golem to spawn successfully, as otherwise, nothing will happen and the Lihzahrd Power Cell will not be consumed.

Behavior

While Golem's main body cannot normally pass through blocks, its fists, lasers, and head (when it is detached in the second phase) can. However, on the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, if the Golem body's path towards the player is blocked by solid tiles, it will leap onto the player, allowing it to pass through all solid blocks (similar to the behavior of a Biome Mimic).

First form

Golem shoots ricocheting fireballsfireballs from its mouth, attacks with its fists that extend from chains, and jumps towards the player. Its fireballs have a 1/2 (50%) chance of inflicting the On Fire! debuff for 5–7 / 10–14 / 15–21 seconds. Golem's long-range attacks increase in frequency as each of its parts takes more damage. Golem's fists will glow bright orange before being launched at the player and travel through solid blocks. However, its fists have a limited range and (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) will also retract immediately upon being hit with any weapon. Golem also jumps around more often when one of its fists is destroyed, which compounds when both fists are destroyed.

When the Golem's head falls below half health (12,500 / 18,750 / 23,906), its eyes will begin to fire eye beamseye beams that can travel through blocks, with its head turning towards the player that it is currently targeting. Golem's eyes fire more rapidly as it takes more damage, (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) and its fists will no longer retract when hit with a weapon.

Second form

Once the health of Golem's stone head is depleted, it detaches from its body and begins hovering directly above the player while passing through blocks. The Golem's head becomes immune to damage, and its body (15,000 / 22,500 / 28,687) becomes the main target. If the fists have not been destroyed, they will continue to attack the player more rapidly while the body continues to jump around. The head follows the same attack pattern as before and will increase in frequency as the body's health is depleted. The only way to defeat Golem at this point is to completely deplete the health of its body, which will also destroy its head, ending the fight.

Enraged behavior

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, Golem becomes "enraged" if it has to follow the player outside of the Underground Jungle, either through being lead or awoken outside of it. This causes Golem to jump around faster and, if its head is below half health, it will fire its lasers faster. However, it does not have increased damage or defense. Golem will return to its normal behavior if returned to the Underground Jungle.

Unlike Plantera, Golem's enraged behavior is not noticeable until reaching the end of its first form, when it begins jumping around and firing lasers at a faster rate. Furthermore, the difference between his enraged and normal behavior will not be noticeable to most without deliberately switching between the two.

Aftermath

Desktop versionConsole versionMobile version
Desktop/Console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.

Once Golem is defeated:

Notes

  • Like most bosses, Golem will despawn if the player travels too far away, including traveling back through the Lihzahrd Temple.
  • Golem's map icon maps its head, not its core, so when the head flies off, the map icon follows it.
  • Golem's fist attack will only fire at the player when they are in the middle or to the same side as the fist. A fist will not cross Golem to strike a player, even if the other fist has been destroyed. However, if the player is above or below Golem using Wings, grappling hooks, Platforms, etc., both arms will fire at the player.
  • If the head chases a player too far away, the body despawns and the head will explode. In this case, no drops will be obtained and the game does not register Golem's defeat, forcing a second fight to progress the game.
  • Heart Arrows(3DS version) are able to freeze Golem's body parts if they connect. This includes the invincible head.
  • Unlike most bosses, Golem is affected by the low gravity in the Space biome. As a result, its jump attack will rise much higher (often off the top of the screen) and take longer to land.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Golem, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Golem strategies.
  • In some cases, the terrain surrounding the altar will cause Golem to get stuck when it spawns. It can attack with its fists and projectiles but will be unable to jump around. Players can also recreate this condition by placing blocks near the altar.
  • On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, blocks under the altar cannot be actuated.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) It is possible to actuate Lihzahrd Bricks. By actuating the blocks below the Lihzahrd Altar, it can be picked up and placed in a different, possibly more suitable arena. This is only possible after Plantera has been defeated.

Trivia

Gore 361.png
Golem's gore of a Lihzahrd Brick-themed sun with a frowning face.
  • In Jewish folklore, a golem (/ˈɡoʊləm/, GOH-ləm; Hebrew: גולם‎) is an animated anthropomorphic being that is created entirely from inanimate matter (usually clay or mud). The word was used to mean an amorphous, unformed material in Psalms and medieval writing.
  • In Golem's first form, its head appears looser the more its health gets lowered, bouncing on its own whenever Golem jumps.
  • The gore sprite of the Lihzahrd Brick-themed sun symbol seen on its body has a sad, frowning face.
  • Assuming that the player is at 5′ 9½″ (1.75 m) in terms of height, Golem would be about 24′ 11″ (7.6 m) tall. Its head alone would be about 12′ 8″ (3.86 m) tall.
  • Despite the sprite update in 1.4.0.1, Golem's achievement icon and gore sprites were not updated.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Golem: "A remarkable display of ingenuity constructed by the Lihzahrd clan. Powered by solar energy cells, it is ready to guard the Temple."
