Skyblock heavily changes game progression and forces the player to create their own artificial biomes to progress. This guide will contain spoilers.

Recommended settings

  • The player should consider creating a small world for easier access to the Shimmer Island. The Shimmer is extremely useful in Skyblock, so it has an entire section dedicated to its uses here. World size has no other effect.
    • However, in a larger world, more Hardmode ore pockets generate per altar smashed.
  • If comfortable with the difficulty, the player should consider setting the world to Expert Mode to obtain exclusive items such as Royal Gel or Shield of Cthulhu.

Surface

Farm slimes for all your resources. They will drop Acorns to get wood, Gel for weapons, and ore. Slimes on Skyblock worlds are more likely to carry an item and additional items are added to their bonus drop pool.

Your starting weapon is essentially useless; get a Slime Spear or Slime Whip as soon as possible, as both only require 50 Gel and your starting Solidifier. Farming for a Zombie Arm or a Slime Staff is very slow, making the previous weapons the best option for a weapon at this point in the game. Consider pairing the whip with Abigail's Flower: plant your grass seeds and put tombstones onto the grass blocks, whether from your own deaths on a non-Hardcore character or from NPC deaths on Hardcore.

Zombies drop Sickles in this seed, which can be used to farm large amounts of Hay for building.

NPCs sell many useful items, so build houses for them immediately. Additionally, Gel can be crafted into Slime Blocks which can be further crafted into furniture for this purpose.

Dirt Blocks can be farmed by using Dirt Bombs in an open area and repeatedly crafting them. The player can also go to the Underground using Ropes and farm Dirt Slimes that spawn in the area. In addition you are able to use Poo on an Extractinator for dirt blocks. Because Wood can be shimmered into Dirt, a tree farm also functions as a Dirt farm.

In the early stage, ropes can be placed horizontally instead of Minecart Tracks to prevent monsters from spawning as there will be no solid tiles.

Building out to the outer 1/6 of the world allows both Goblin Scouts and Foxparks. The scouts drop Tattered Cloth which can be used to summon the Goblin Army.

Underground

The quickest way to get a Furnace is to descend into the underground layer using Rope and/or platforms. There, Slimes will drop Stone, Wood, and Dirt, as well as ores. It is recommended to use Cloud Blocks (or Cloud Platforms) to build a bridge as they are renewable from cloud slimes and negate fall damage.

For an Anvil, you should purchase it from the Merchant to save on Iron Ore. Iron is valuable to create Empty Buckets, which when thrown on the ground as an item, will fill up with water once it rains. An entire stack of buckets can convert to water at once. You can get lava from Lava Slimes that spawn in The Underworld (this seed causes them to always drop lava, even in Classic difficulty), and they drop much more lava than usual. You can get honey by obtaining the Honey blocks for which the Honey Slimes can be defeated. Liquid duplication can be used to get an infinite supply of any liquid.

If you are standing near water, you can craft Dirt Blocks into Mud Blocks. Slimes have a chance to drop Jungle Grass Seeds, allowing you to create a Jungle.

The Skeleton Merchant sells Roller Skates, allowing you to create bridges with ease.

Cavern

In the Cavern layer, Slimes can spawn that drop Life Crystals, Cobwebs, and Conveyor Belts. Mimics will drop Gold Chest loot.

Slimes will also spawn containing Granite and Marble blocks, allowing for the creation of an artificial Granite Cave biome. This allows the player access to Granite enemies that drop Geodes, allowing the player access to gems. Marble allows Hoplites to spawn, who drop the high-defense Gladiator armor and the Stress Ball, which is useful for AFK farms.

Alternatively, if the player creates an NPC town in the cavern layer, gem critters will spawn quite frequently nearby, especially in the rain. Catching these with a bug Net and then shimmering them gives their respective gem. Additionally, once the player has access to the gem and acorns, gemcorns can be used to also farm even more gems. Gem critters can also be caught to sell for 15 SC per, which helps to start collecting money for later in the run.

Farming Mobs

Once you obtain lava, you can start farming mobs in the Surface, Underground and Cavern layer for their loot.

Evil biome

After the Eye of Cthulhu is defeated, the player will get access to their chosen evil biome. Creating a fishing pool in the evil biome will make the player able to obtain the Crimson Heart/Shadow Orb items, and additionally, creating an artificial evil biome is required to fight the respective evil boss.

Jungle and Glowing Mushroom

In order to build the biomes, the player has to turn Dirt into the Mud by standing in the water or near any of the Sinks; both the Jungle Grass Seeds and the Mushroom Grass Seeds are rarely dropped from the Slimes on the surface and can be transformed into each other via Shimmer. The Glowing Mushroom biome can also spawn in the world as an additional island if the world is created with the secret seed toadstool

Turning your starting island into a glowing mushroom biome might come in handy, as it counts as a pylon link biome, which can be used for easy access to the shimmer island, and for the Truffle to move in while in hardmode.

Jungle biome specifics

There are slimes unique to this area, notably the Bee slimes that shoot bees when damaged/touched by the player and drop the hive block, or the herb slimes that drop the Moonglow plant.

There are alternative ways to build the Jungle Biome:

  • If the player has defeated the Eye of Cthulhu, they can use Corrupt/Crimson Seeds to spread the Evil biome and then purify it via the Purification Powder which is both bought by Dryad and can be transformed by shimmering Vile/Vicious Powder (crafted by using respective mushrooms); this method involves more risk but is a better option in case the player wants to construct the artificial Jungle Biome in a short period of time.
  • The player can build the Glowing Mushroom Biome and create a house for Dryad, who sells the Mushroom Grass Seeds that can be crafted into the Jungle Grass Seeds by shimmering them.

Note that Jungle Spores cannot grow if other jungle plants are in the way, so a farm for spores should regularly be cleaned out to make room for Spores to farm.

Snow biome

During night after the player has defeated King Slime, or the Eye of Cthulhu, the Demolitionist will sell Freeze Bombs that turns water into ice.

Placing ice blocks allows Ice Slime and Spiked Ice Slimes to spawn; in particular, they require either a Snow Biome or ice tiles to spawn on. When Underground, they have a chance to drop Snow and Slush respectively.

Alternatively, using the secret seed winter is coming will generate snow and ice islands.

Unlike regular worlds, only 300 blocks are needed to make Snow biome.

Defeating Deerclops to obtain the Pew-matic Horn is the most reliable way of getting a gun for the Arms Dealer to move in. The other option is to purchase the Revolver or to fish for crates in the evil biome. During Christmas, the Red Ryder can be obtained from presents instead.

Desert biome, Sand and Glass

Sand can be obtained by using Obsidian or Shell Piles on the Extractinator. Unlike the usual 1500 blocks required in other world seeds, only 300 blocks are needed to make the Desert biome in the Skyblock seed. The Extractinator can be obtained via Mimics or Wooden Crate, and the Shimmer Island uses Obsidian to contain the Shimmer. Alternatively, potions can be thrown into Shimmer to obtain Bottled Water, which is further reduced to Glass, then Sand. Afterwards, such a setup can be used to spawn an Antlion to infinitely obtain Sand Blocks.

Alternatively, you can fish in the ocean biome to obtain shell piles to extractinate from Biome Crates. The next thing you should do is lay down a long line of sand in the Ocean biome, which will cause shells to spawn continuously on top of it, which can be turned into more sand. Once you have enough sand, you can make an artificial Underground Desert biome, allowing you to farm Antlion Mandible, which allows you to craft the Sandgun. With the sandgun and some ammo reservation, you could easily and efficiently AFK farm infinite sand using a torch setup.

Sand Slimes have a chance to spawn once either a Desert biome is established or sand tiles are present for them to spawn on. When underground, they have a chance to drop Fossils. Note that the Underground Desert biome requires both that the player be in front of unsafe desert walls and that enemies spawn in front of unsafe desert walls. This includes placing the walls behind the sand itself and not just above it.

Additionally, using the secret seed sandy britches will generate desert islands.

Ocean biome

At the edges of the world, the ocean biome will still generate as usual, despite not having any blocks for obvious reasons. From the ocean biome, you are able to get the Angler, and farm infinite sand by exploiting the shell-spawning mechanic unique to the ocean biome. Place sand in a line, and Shell and Starfish will slowly generate, which can be broken down to Shell Pile, and use it at an extractinator for more sand. Additionally, creating an artificial water pool at the ocean is required to fight Duke Fishron.

Early bosses

The King Slime is highly rewarding in Expert Mode, dropping the Royal Gel accessory that makes almost all slimes no longer try to attack you (Projectiles such as a Spiked Jungle Slime's spikes will still deal damage if the slime is attacking another player who does not have the Royal Gel). Wait for a Slime Rain.

The Eye of Cthulhu can randomly spawn at night once the player has 200 HP, 10 defense, and 4 NPCs. Among the items, the boss drops Crimson Seeds or Corrupt Seeds which allow the player to create The Corruption/The Crimson biome. It also drops either of the Altars, which are functional and allow to craft the summoning items to fight the bosses repeatedly as well as to craft the Night's Edge.

Defeating the Brain of Cthulhu or Eater of Worlds will cause a Meteorite shower at night, which is equivalent to a crash event. Small Meteorites will fall from the sky, crashing into the world's topmost solid blocks and becoming Meteorite ore which can then be picked up. They will not crash into platforms. The player can be hurt by the falling Meteorites if they are hit by them.

The Dungeon

Both the Brain of Cthulhu or Eater of Worlds drop Dungeon blocks and all three unsafe wall variants which allows the creation of an artificial Dungeon. Placing the blocks allows the Old Man to spawn and for Skeletron to be fought. However, the Dungeon Guardian still can spawn if the player is below the surface and had not defeated Skeletron yet.

Once Skeletron is defeated and the walls are placed, water can be used to fish up Dungeon Crates. Additionally, Skeletron drops the Hellforge, which can be crafted into the Hardmode Forge in Hardmode and allow the player to create more powerful gear. Additionally, killing Skeletron causes Hell Slimes to begin spawning in The Underworld which drop Hellstone.

Fishing

Fishing can be important in this secret seed because it allows the player to obtain the items that they would normally get from chests in their respective environment (i.e. the player can obtain Boomstick by fishing in the Jungle and catching the Jungle Crate) or to obtain unique items such as Frog Leg. In addition, the player may accumulate a lot of fish that can be sold, cooked into food or be used to brew potions.

By placing the sand blocks in the Ocean, the player can spawn the Angler NPC that will reward the player with both the vanity items or novelty furniture and the functional items in exchange for completing his quests that involve bringing unique quest fish from various biomes and/or environments. The most important items are the Golden Fishing Rod (the most powerful fishing rod), potions for fishing, bait, the ingredients for the Angler Tackle Bag, and the Golden Bug Net.

With the Golden Bug Net, Underworld critters can be caught and used to fish for Obsidian Crates, which can contain the Lavaproof Fishing Hook for the Lavaproof Tackle Bag, Hellforges, and can give Hellstone Bars before Skeletron has been defeated.

Generally, it is very helpful to do Angler quests each day you can. The rewards scale the more quests you do and it gives you access to better fishing gear allowing you easier access to biome specific drops through crates or regular fishing.

Late Pre-Hardmode

At this point, you should make an arena for the Wall of Flesh, preferably out of Planter Boxes for being cheap to buy in bulk, act essentially the same as platforms, and let Lava pass through unlike platforms which get destroyed, which is very useful, since in the skyblock seed, Lava Slimes and Hell Slimes will always spawn lava when defeated. Alternatively, you may want to use full blocks for a bridge, as falling through them can be instantly fatal regardless of how prepared you are. You should also have a Pylon network set up for quick travel between islands or underground farms you may have set up.

Minecart Tracks can also be used, as they can be ridden, or walked on using Roller Skates. Like planter boxes, they are easily able to be obtained in bulk, and lava is able to pass through them, but they also prevent enemy spawns as they are not a solid block. This is especially useful in For the Worthy and Get fixed boi seeds where the Wall of Flesh will spawn buffed Fire Imps during the fight.

Hardmode

Early Hardmode

Once the Wall of Flesh is defeated, the player is able to create the Hallow biome by planting Hallowed Seeds on dirt. The Hallow can spread quickly to Sand, creating Pearlsand which can be multiplied by using the Sand gun with any form of ammo conservation. Additionally, the player can craft Holy Water to speed up the spread of the Hallow. Another change is that the player can obtain the Hardmode ores by defeating the new slimes; at this point, the progression is very straightforward.

Jungle Temple

On this seed, Plantera drops Lihzahrd Bricks, unsafe Lihzard walls, and the Lihzahrd Altar, allowing Golem to be summoned. In addition to this, the Picksaw is dropped, allowing the player to fix their artificial Jungle Temple if mistakes were made.

Lunar Events

Upon defeating Golem, the Cultists will spawn in the artificial Dungeon you created previously, allowing for the Lunar Events and Moon Lord to be fought.

Shimmer Island

There is only one other island besides the main one you spawn on, which is the Shimmer Island. There are many uses for the Shimmer, but the ones most useful to this seed are as follows:

With For the Worthy

In the For the Worthy special world seed, it removes the Solidifier and the Shimmer Island along with all of its other effects, unless Celebration Mk 10 seed is also enabled.

With Zenith

The Zenith (seed) special world seed starts on an ash island in The Underworld, along with all the other changes caused by the Remix seed. Initially, it is recommended to farm the Lava Slimes that will spawn, as their drops have been switched to that of a normal Slime (additionally containing no lava drops), and gather enough blocks or ropes to get to the cavern layer.

From this point, you can continue the run as in a normal Skyblock world, but there are some important changes that may affect your playthrough:

  • Trees grow on the surface, but the time it takes for a tree to grow is extended by at least 100 times
  • Hellbats spawn when approximately 800 blocks away from the center of the world and are an easy source of early lava
  • The starter island is corrupted, therefore no NPC shops near it will sell pylons
    • However, pylons still work on the island; they just need to be brought elsewhere
