Hammers
Hammers are tools that are used to break background walls and to create angled slopes and half-blocks. Higher-level hammers (e.g. the Chlorophyte Warhammer) have high damage and can serve as weapons. Some can serve as both hammers and axes at the same time, known as hamaxes. In Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), newly created players spawn with an Iron Hammer.
Any hammer may be used to break Shadow Orbs and Crimson Hearts. A Pwnhammer or better is required to destroy altars; however, this is only possible in a world where the Wall of Flesh has been defeated. When attempting to destroy one with a lesser hammer, or prior to defeating the Wall of Flesh, the player will take damage equal to half their current health, and the altar will remain unharmed.
The Drill Mount also has some of the functions of a hammer, being able to destroy altars and create slopes and half-blocks.
Types
There are 32 different types of hammers, 12 of which are Hardmode-exclusive.

Slopes and half-blocks
The shape of a block can be changed by using a hammer on it. Blocks are normally square but can be hammered into triangles ("slopes") and rectangles ("half-blocks").
Pressing the ⚒ Use / Attack button on a full block while a hammer is selected usually changes it to a half-block. Pressing the button again on that half-block usually changes it to a slope facing right, and further presses of ⚒ Use / Attack cause the block to cycle through the rest of the shapes listed below. The cycle repeats infinitely, so a sloped or half-block can be returned to the full-block shape eventually by hammering it a sufficient number of times. The order of the shapes listed below may vary depending on whether there are other blocks surrounding the hammered block.
- Full block: Square, occupies the full tile
- Half-block: Short rectangle, approximately the upper half of the tile is air
- Slope (floor) facing right: Right triangle, the top-right half of the tile is air
- Slope (floor) facing left: Right triangle, the top-left half of the tile is air
- Slope (ceiling) facing right: Right triangle, the bottom-right half of the tile is air
- Slope (ceiling) facing left: Right triangle, the bottom-left half of the tile is air
Each tile can still only accommodate one block, so it is impossible to have, for instance, a Stone Block and a Dirt Block with opposite-facing slopes within the same tile – even though the space would allow it.
Platforms can similarly be hammered into slanted stairs and a "bottom" position. See Platforms § Positioning platforms for details.
Hammer power
Hammer power dictates how many hits it takes for a hammer to destroy background walls.[1]
All walls have 100 hit points each. Hitting a wall with a hammer subtracts 150 hit points multiplied by that hammer's hammer power, rounded down. The wall is destroyed once its hit points are reduced to 0 or below.
Examples:
- Wooden Hammer(25% hammer power)
- [math]\displaystyle{ \left \lfloor 25\% * 150 \right \rfloor = 37 }[/math]
- Using the Wooden Hammer subtracts 37 hit points from a wall, therefore it takes 3 hits to destroy a wall with it.
- Rockfish(70% hammer power)
- [math]\displaystyle{ \left \lfloor 70\% * 150 \right \rfloor = 105 }[/math]
- Using the Rockfish subtracts 105 hit points from a wall, therefore it takes 1 hit to destroy a wall with it.
These are the threshold hammer powers with regard to the number of hits required to destroy a wall:
Hammer power | Hits |
---|---|
17% – 22% | 4 |
23% – 33% | 3 |
34% – 66% | 2 |
≥ 67% | 1 |
Notes
- Hammers are also used to change the direction of fire of certain traps, such as Dart Traps.
- Furthermore, they are used to change the types of Minecart Track ends and intersections.
- When breaking background walls, the tool speed of a hammer is halved, rounded down.[2] The Chlorophyte Jackhammer is unaffected by this.
Achievements
Trivia
- All six Hardmode ores have no themed hammer or hamaxe available.
History
- Desktop 1.3.0.1: Added four new hamaxes crafted using Luminite Bars and Celestial Fragments.
- Desktop 1.2.4: Fixed bug where the player would float when standing between a downwards slope and a halftile.
- Desktop 1.2.3: Added upside down slopes. Fixed two of the floating player bugs where the player is wildly off the surface they are standing on.
- Desktop 1.2:
- Hammers now produce half-blocks and slopes.
- Hammers no longer remove furniture or life crystals, which is now removed with pickaxes or drills.
- Desktop 1.0.6: Hammers now destroy blocks faster, walls about twice as fast as other objects.
