Sunflower
Buff | Happy!(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) |

Buff tooltip | Movement speed increased and monster spawns reduced |

Duration | Infinite while in vicinity |

Naturally generated Sunflowers in a
Forest.
The Sunflower is a large, tall plant which can be found growing naturally on grass, and can be broken with a pickaxe or drill, or by coming into contact with water. It cannot be grown from seeds like most other plants, but is instead placed fully-grown, either naturally upon world generation or by the player. It can also be purchased from the Dryad for 50 SC each, while a Blood Moon is not occurring.
Sunflowers can only be placed on regular, Hallowed, (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Jungle, or (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Ash grass, at any height. They cannot be placed on Corrupt grass, Crimson grass, Mushroom grass, bare Dirt Blocks, nor in Clay Pots or Planter Boxes.
Sunflowers grant the Happy! buff to players in their vicinity, increasing their movement speed and reducing enemy spawns. Furthermore, they serve as a small barrier against the spread of the Corruption/Crimson and Hallow, negate some of the effects of the evil biomes, and help preventing Graveyard(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) biomes from forming.
Effects
A placed Sunflower provides the following functions:
- The two tiles directly underneath it cannot become Corrupted, Crimsoned, or Hallowed, even in Hardmode. In some cases, this can prevent Corrupted and Crimson grass from spreading sideways. On
Desktop,
Console, and
Mobile, it also blocks other conversions in a small area around it. See Biome spread for details.
- Each Sunflower decreases an area's evil biome tile count by 80 tiles.[1] Furthermore, when determing whether NPCs will reject a house, each Sunflower in the area decreases the evil score by 40 points.[2] If placed in large quantities, Sunflowers can allow NPCs to live near evil biomes. For the exact size of each area, see Biomes § Biome existence requirements and House respectively.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) It provides the Happy! buff to players within a rectangular area of 170×125[3] tiles centered on the Sunflower, which grants +10% movement speed, a ×1.1 movement speed multiplier to itself and all movement speed buffs to the left of it in the buff list (effectively making the buff granting +21% movement speed), and 17% reduction in enemy spawn rate.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) It helps to prevent Graveyard biomes from forming by canceling out one Tombstone each.
Notes
- The Sunflower's Happy! buff stacks with the effect of the Peace Candle(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), as well as the movement speed buff of Asphalt Blocks.
- The buff reduces critter spawns, so if the player would like to collect bait, it is wise to remove any nearby Sunflowers.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Sunflowers glow in the dark, though they will not light up the surrounding area, only its flower.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) When placed in a Graveyard biome, Sunflowers do not grant nearby players the Happy! buff.
- Sunflowers have a very low chance of spawning more Sunflowers in a small area.Verify
Trivia
The sunflower from the release trailer.
- In the release trailer for 1.3, a variant of sunflower was shown with a golden interior as opposed to the regular sunflower (some are seen in the beginning of the trailer). It never ended up in the final update and its effects are unknown.
- Sunflowers' ability to resist Corruption and Crimson may be a reference to their real-world reputation for cleaning up nuclear radiation.[4]
- A sunflower is used as the loading icon on the
Desktop,
Console,
Mobile, and
Switch versions.
