Using a Katana to attack a Target Dummy.

The Katana is a pre-Hardmode sword that can be purchased from the Traveling Merchant for (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 10 GC / (Old-gen console version) 2 GC50 SC. It has a base 19% critical strike chance, as opposed to the usual 4%.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes

  • Due to the large size of the Katana and its high speed, it is great for clearing out hordes of flying enemies by knocking them back before they strike.
  • In Don't dig up(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, the Katana receives the following changes:
    • Switched place with Keybrand. As a result, it is dropped by the Rusty, Hell, and Blue Armored Bones instead of sold by the Traveling Merchant.
    • Damage increased from 18 to 150.
    • Use time decreased from 20 to 15.
    • Critical strike chance increased from 19% to 33%.
    • Value increased from 10 GC to 20 GC.

Trivia

  • The katana is a Japanese saber used by samurai, renowned for its superb craftsmanship that was developed as a result of the poor quality of the iron that medieval Japanese swordsmiths had access to.
    • The word katana is usually written as kanji "刀", but Spike Chunsoft opted to translate it as the katakana name "カタナ" in the Japanese Console version Japanese Console version. This decision was likely made because "" can also mean sword or bladed edge (including, for instance, daggers or even chisels) – not just the historically well-known katana.
