The Life Crystal Boulder is a furniture item. It spawns naturally in the No traps secret seed and in the Get fixed boi (everything) secret seed.

It appears very similar to an ordinary Life Crystal and is generated in a similar manner upon world creation, but acts identically to a Boulder if hit with a pickaxe or drill, or otherwise unsupported by solid blocks. The Life Crystal Boulder falls directly downwards until it collides with solid blocks upon activation, at which point it begins rolling, picking up speed and dealing damage to the player, enemies, critters, and NPCs.[1] Life Crystal Boulders pierce through an unlimited number of entities and accelerate to a top speed of 36 mph over the course of 2.17 seconds.[2]

Life Crystal Boulders roll across flat surfaces and down slopes but break and disappear upon colliding with an obstacle (such as a wall of solid tiles). They deal 140 / 280 / 420 to players (70 damage to NPCs, enemies, and critters), inflict a knockback value of 10 (Extremely strong) on contact, and pierce through an unlimited number of entities. However, unlike regular Boulders, when the Life Crystal Boulder breaks after colliding with solid blocks or after rolling for one minute (like all other projectiles), it drops a Life Crystal item that can be picked up.

In summary, the Life Crystal Boulder simply acts as a re-skinned Boulder in the guise of a Life Crystal.

Notes

  • Life Crystals started with a pickaxe or drill appear to roll the direction that will give them the longest amount of time to roll (e.g. if two walls are on either side of a long platform, placing it closer to one wall will cause it to roll the opposite direction).
  • Once rolling, Life Crystal Boulders deal the same amount of damage regardless of their speed. A player or enemy hit by a Life Crystal Boulder that had just begun rolling will take just as much damage as they would from a Life Crystal Boulder moving at a higher speed. This also means that players trying to mine a Life Crystal Boulder while touching it will take damage.
    • If moving along a flat strip of land, this allows it to roll a maximum distance of 1548.6 tiles.[3]
  • Similarly to regular Boulders, Life Crystal Boulders can be placed atop flat-surface furniture, such as tables or bookcases. Mining the bottom one causes all of them to fall and roll. Unlike Boulders, Life Crystal Boulders cannot be stacked on top of each other.
  • It is possible for Life Crystal Boulders to roll uphill, as long as there is one flat tile in between each sloped tile.
  • Life Crystal Boulders sell for the same amount of coins as the Life Crystals used to craft them.

Tips

  • The way to tell whether a Life Crystal is a boulder or not is that Life Crystal Boulders do not emit sparkle particles, unlike actual Life Crystals.

  1. Information taken from the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code, method Check2x2() in Terraria.WorldGen.cs.
  2. Information taken from the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code, method AI() in Terraria.Projectile.cs. The relevant part is the aiStyle == 25 block.
  3. 1 minute total = 3600 ticks. During the accelerating phase (130 ticks), it reaches 487.5 pixels. During the remaining 3470 ticks (when it's moving at a constant speed), it reaches 24290 pixels. 487.5 + 24290 = 24777.5 pixels total.
