Mana
Mana is a resource consumed by the player upon using magic weapons or summon weapons (except whips). Magic and summon weapons have a specific mana cost that depletes the player's mana upon use. When a player's mana is depleted completely, a magic or summon weapon cannot be used again until that weapon's mana cost has regenerated.
Similarly to health, the player's current mana supply and capacity are represented by a meter: a column of blue stars displayed on the top-right edge of the screen to the right of the life counter, with each star representing 20 mana. Mana regenerates automatically as long as the player is not using it. It fills more quickly if the player stands still, with a further rate boost based on the current total mana: The more mana a player has, the faster it regenerates.
Each character starts with 20 mana capacity (one star in the mana meter). Using Mana Crystals increases the player's mana capacity by 20 permanently, adding another star to the meter. This can be done up to 9 times, which in addition to the 1 initial star makes 10 stars total, representing 200 mana.
On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, the player can change the style of the mana bar via the "Health and Mana Style" option in the settings. With the Bars styles, the mana meter will be displayed as a blue bar split into multiple small parts located below the life counter, with each part representing 20 mana.
Mana capacity can be increased further through the use of various armors and accessories. Accessories with the Arcane modifier also boost the player's maximum mana capacity by 20. This is maxed out at 400 mana, or 20 stars total.
When mana regeneration has completed and the player again reaches maximum mana, a chirp sound is played and a blue sparkle effect is shown briefly on the character's sprite.
Boost gear
To use mana-consuming items more often, certain items can increase the maximum mana or reduce the mana cost. Because of how mana regeneration works, these can also effectively increase the rate of mana regeneration, so long as the player takes care to remain above certain current mana thresholds.

Restoring mana
Mana regenerates on its own when not in use until the player's current maximum is reached.
The natural rate of regeneration is modified by whether or not the player is moving and how much current mana a character has. This formula exists to punish reckless mana use – if all mana is spent, the player will have almost no regeneration at all until they stop moving or use a potion. Conversely, when the player does not move (including standing still or being stationary when using hooks) and waits between uses of weapons until mana is refilled, mana recovers at its fastest possible rate. Wearing items that increase the maximum mana can thus also increase the rate of recovery, as each use of weapon would spend less percentage of maximum mana, giving the player a higher mana regeneration multiplier.
However, mana does not regenerate for a small period after any magic is expended, meaning that to start regenerating mana the player must stop casting spells for a short time. The regeneration cooldown starts the moment the player stops spending mana, so casting weapons like Magic Missile or Flamelash will start the cooldown as soon as it is cast, regardless of how long the projectile is held.
Several items can be used to regenerate mana:

Technical info
The mana regeneration has a similar mechanism of health regeneration – there is also a mana counter which is increased by a mana regeneration rate every tick.[1] When it reaches 120 or more, it would be reduced by 120 and increase mana by 1. So, 1 mana regeneration rate equals to 0.5 mana per second.[2]
By default, a player's mana will not always be regenerating: a mana regeneration delay will be applied after the player uses mana-consuming items. The delay is set to a certain number calculated by the formula below (round up after the calculation):[3] [math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{Mana\ regeneration\ delay} = 0.7\times\left(\left(1-\frac{\mathit{current\ mana}}{\mathit{maximum\ mana}}\right)\times 240 + 45 \right) }[/math]
The mana regeneration delay will be reduced by 1 every tick by default. Certain effects will increase this value:
Factor | Value |
---|---|
Not moving or Mana Regeneration |
+1 |
Arcane Crystal | +0.05 |
Mana Regeneration Band | +1 |
Star in a Bottle | +0.5 |
Additionally, when the Mana Regeneration buff is active, if the mana regeneration delay is greater than 20, it will be set to 20.
Once the mana regeneration delay reaches 0, the mana regeneration rate would be calculated by the formula below:
[math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{Mana\ regeneration\ rate} = \left(\frac{\mathit{maximum\ mana}}{3}+1+\mathit{stationary\ bonus}+\mathit{Arcane\ Crystal\ bonus}+\mathit{mana\ regen\ bonus}\right)\times\mathit{regen\ factor}\times1.15 }[/math]
- [math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{stationary\ bonus} = \frac{\mathit{maximum\ mana}}{3} }[/math] when the player is not moving or have the Mana Regeneration buff; otherwise it is 0.
- [math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{Arcane\ Crystal\ bonus} = \frac{\mathit{maximum\ mana}}{50} }[/math] when the player have used an Arcane Crystal; otherwise it is 0.
- The [math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{mana\ regen\ bonus} }[/math] is 0 by default. Certain effects will increase this value:
Factor | Value |
---|---|
Mana Regeneration Band | +25 |
Star in a Bottle | +10 |
- [math]\displaystyle{ \mathit{regen\ factor} = \frac{\mathit{current\ mana}}{\mathit{maximum\ mana}}\times0.8+0.2 }[/math]. If the Mana Regeneration buff is active, it will be set to 1.
Unlike all other mana-regenerating methods, the Mana Nebula from the Nebula armor periodically regenerates a fixed amount of mana, regardless of mana regeneration delay. There is a Nebula counter that is increased by the same amount of stacks of the Mana Nebula per tick. When the counter reaches 6, it would be reduced by 6 and increase mana by 1.
Notes
- Mana-restoring effects will not exceed the player's maximum mana and any mana restoration beyond the maximum is lost. It is thus advisable to take care when pressing the mana potion hotkey to avoid wasteful overuse of mana restoring items.
- Restoration Potions (which also restore health) share an item cooldown called Potion Sickness with all other health-restoring items. The cooldown is 60 seconds long and begins when the consumable item is used. During this period, the player is unable to consume any more of those items. This prevents players from bypassing hazardous areas or enemies by constant item consumption.
- "Pure" mana-restoration items do not have this restriction – there is even the previously mentioned Mana Flower item that allows automatic consumption of mana potions for continuous mana consumption. Players may attempt continuous fire of magical attacks if they are willing to pay the costs in terms of potions to do so. Do keep in mind that consuming a "pure" mana-restoration item will trigger the Mana Sickness debuff. While this will not prevent the player from consuming more mana potions, it will cripple their magic damage output for a short time. Consider having Magic Power Potions to offset the reduction in magic damage if using a Mana Flower.
- It is generally more worthwhile to focus on equipment that reduces mana cost instead of increasing maximum mana, especially if using weapons with a low mana cost. For example, a Mythical Razorpine's mana cost can be reduced from 4 to 2 when using the Spectre Mask and Dark Artist's Robes, both of which also provide substantial offensive magic bonuses. This is functionally the same as doubling the maximum mana.
Tips
- Setting up Star Statues on timers can help giving magic-using players much better rates of magical fire in boss-fighting or enemy-farming situations where there is time to prepare where the player is going to fight. Using the Crystal Ball is also helpful in such situations.
- If a player wants to rely on mana-consuming weapons for normal exploration, they should memorize how to best recover mana, even while distracted. To make the most of mana regeneration, the player should practice understanding the timing between when they fire, and when the tone that indicates they have recovered full mana occurs, (so that they fire their next attack at exactly that moment,) and try to remain stationary during times when the mana recovery starts. Firing can be practiced in a safe location like the player's home until they are comfortable with how they regenerate their mana.

- Maximum mana is capped at a value of 400. It is possible to reach this value without any Mana Crystals by equipping certain gear:
- Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version (Expert-only)
- Titanium Headgear
- Hallowed Headgear(alternative to Titanium Headgear)
- Diamond Robe
- Forbidden Treads(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Clairvoyance

- This even increases the maximum mana to 410.
Trivia
- The sound that is played when mana is fully restored is also used for notifying the end of the projectile's cooldown of the Starfury, Ice Blade, Enchanted Sword, and Chlorophyte Claymore.[4] In Old-gen console version and Nintendo version, that also includes the Frostbrand, Beam Sword, and Chlorophyte Saber.
History
- Desktop 1.4.4:
- The base mana regen rate (the amount regenerated when moving and not using Mana Regeneration Potion) has been more than doubled.
- The mana regen bonus when stationary and/or using Mana Regeneration Potion has been cut by 1/3rd. This reduction is the exact size of the amount added to the base regen rate, so there is no net gain in the total amount of regen possible.
- A player using Mana Regeneration Potion/Stationary should have the same mana regen speed as before, but the minimum mana regeneration rate has been increased substantially, making Mana Regeneration Potion/being stationary less mandatory for playability.
- Desktop 1.4.0.1: Added two new Mana Bar style options.
- Desktop 1.2.3.1: Spectre Hood does not increase Mana cost anymore.
- Desktop 1.2.3:
- Spectre Hood now has an increased Mana cost of 20% instead of lowering it and it does not add extra mana anymore.
- New Spectre Hood variant introduced: Spectre Mask, which lowers Mana cost by 13% and increases max mana by 60 (3 stars).
- Desktop 1.2: New characters start with base Mana.
- Desktop 1.0.6.1: Fixed a bug where Mana would not regenerate if the player had 0 base mana.
- Desktop 1.0.6:
- Mana now recharges depending when how much the player has in their mana pool. The more mana they currently have, the faster it recharges. It also recharges much faster when standing still compared to when moving.
- Mana bar turned from purple to blue, along with most related items.
- A sound effect signifies when it is filled and the character will emit a small glitter with a "blip" sound.
