The Mining Potion is a buff potion which grants the Mining buff when consumed. The buff increases mining speed by 25%. This lasts for (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 10 / (Old-gen console version) 5 minutes, but can be canceled at any time by right-clicking the icon (Desktop version), by selecting the icon using Cycle Next/Previous Buff and then pressing Remove Buff (Console version), by selecting the icon and canceling it in the equipment menu (Old-gen console version), or by double-tapping the buff icon (Mobile version).

In addition to being crafted, Mining Potions can be found in pots, chests, and crates, and have a small chance to appear as a bonus drop from slimes.

Notes

  • The Mining buff only increases the mining speed of pickaxes, and will not increase the drilling speed of drills or the Drill Containment Unit(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). It will affect the axe speed of hybrid pickaxes and axes like the Pickaxe Axe, but not the axe or hammer speed of normal axes or hammers.
  • Mining speed bonuses stack subtractively, meaning that each successive bonus is larger than the last. Due to its subtractive nature and rounding effects, a Mining Potion will cause pickaxes to mine at least 1.33× as fast and often even faster.
  • The Mining buff will stack together with the bonuses from the Ancient Chisel(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Slice of Cake(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Celestial Stone, Celestial Shell, Sun Stone or Moon Stone, and Mining armor.
    • Each successive mining speed boost becomes more powerful as more are added, up to a total of 70%. Max mining speed more than triples mining speed for any pickaxe, and for the Titanium Pickaxe and stronger, max mining speed buffs allow mining a block every single tick[1].
  • A Flipper Potion will help when creating a hellevator to avoid being slowed down by water.

Trivia

  • The sprite slightly resembles a pickaxe when turned upside-down:

History

  • Desktop 1.3.0.1: Sprite updated, buff duration increased from 5 to 8 minutes.
  1. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
