This article is about the type of mushroom that grows in forests. For the class of plants "Mushrooms", see Mushrooms. For the biome, see Glowing Mushroom biome.

The Mushroom is a pre-Hardmode crafting material and recovery potion that spawns randomly on grass or Hallowed grass on the surface layer. It can be harvested with any tool or weapon.

When used, the Mushroom restores 15 health and inflicts Potion Sickness for 30 seconds. This duration can be reduced via the Philosopher's Stone or Charm of Myths.

In The Constant worlds, eating a Mushroom also resets Hunger to 5 minutes of Peckish, if the player is hungry.

Notes

  • Harvesting a Mushroom with a Sickle additionally yields 1–2 Hay blocks.

Tips

  • The Mushroom's Potion Sickness has half the duration of healing potions, but it can only heal 30 health per minute, compared to the Lesser Healing Potion's 50.
  • Regeneration Potions are the most valuable thing that Mushrooms can be used for, restoring twice as much HP per second as a Band of Regeneration. Lesser Healing Potions can be bought from the Merchant, while there are other better, more easily obtained food options.

Farming

Mushrooms are used to craft Regeneration Potions, which are a massive survivability bonus throughout the entire game. This makes them very valuable to hold onto and farm, and careful maintenance can let a player have the Regeneration buff always active.

Mushrooms grow on any free grass tiles in the surface layer, but cannot disrupt existing grass - once a strip of grass grows plants along it, an average of 1/40 grass tiles will have a mushroom on them. The smoothest way to keep a good supply of mushrooms, then, is to break plants and mushrooms on grass as you go, by swinging a pickaxe or weapon, so they have more space to grow. By holding onto the mushrooms collected along the way, a player can get a sufficient amount of Mushrooms for crafting without needing to build a complicated farm at all.

One simple and effective farm is a sky bridge. Planting grass on a sky bridge with a Staff/Axe of Regrowth or Grass Seeds gives an easy, flat space where the player can collect mushrooms just by running along and breaking grass, while also getting other benefits from the sky bridge like easier travel and fallen star collection.

A more rectangular farm with multiple grass layers stacked on top of each other can also work with more building effort. Grass lines here are placed 2 or 3 lines at a time with just enough space for mushrooms to grow, and collection can be automated with Actuators or Dart Traps.

Trivia

  • The mushroom very closely resembles the Super Mushroom power-up from the original 1985 platform game Super Mario Bros.
  • It is the weakest recovery potion in the game.
    • While Life Fruits technically have the lowest healing, healing 5 health per use, they also have a permanent effect.
