Music Boxes
The Music Box is a Hardmode accessory and furniture item that can be purchased from the Wizard for 10 GC. When the Music Box is equipped in an accessory slot, it will record the currently playing in-game music after a randomized delay. This includes tracks being played by other Music Boxes. Once recorded, it will change into one of the Music Boxes listed below. A record sound alerts the player about a completed recording. Most Music Box variants can only be obtained by recording in-game music with the exception of Music Box (Journey's End), which can be bought directly from the Princess for 10 GC after defeating the Moon Lord.
A recorded Music Box can be played back in one of two ways:
- Equipping it as an accessory.
- Placing it as furniture and activating it, either by the ⚷ Open / Activate button or with wires.
Recorded Music Boxes can be reverted into blank ones through Shimmer transmutation.
There are 88 different Music Boxes available.

Notes
- A Music Box will not record if the in-game music volume is set to 0.
- A Music Box will always sell for 2 GC, regardless of whether it has recorded anything.
- Activating a recorded Music Box that has been placed will cause all players in the vicinity to hear its music.
- Music Boxes will record other placed Music Boxes. This is useful if multiple music boxes are required for a large area.
- A Music Box's actual range is relative to the player's resolution size; it will be audible if it is within 30 tiles of the edge of the player's screen.
- The Title Music Box is crafted with "Overworld Day" and cannot be crafted with "Alt Overworld Day". It must also be crafted with "Underground", and not "Alt Underground".
- The Title Music Box is difficult to craft in Crimson worlds, as the recipe was made before the Crimson was introduced. It is possible to create an artificial Corruption by purchasing Corrupt Seeds from the Dryad in a Hardmode Graveyard in order to record the Corruption and Underground Corruption Music Boxes.
- While the Title, Journey's Beginning, Alt Title, and Day Remix Music Boxes have to be crafted first, they can be recorded, along with any other Music Box.
- Unlike most equipped accessories, an equipped Music Box is not visible on the player.
A Music Box will not record when equipped in a vanity accessory slot or when it is inside an inventory slot. It can, however, be listened to when recorded.
It can take up to 10 minutes for a Music Box to record music.- The Journey's End Music Box behaves differently depending on if it is equipped in a social slot or accessory slot. Equipping it in a social slot only plays the music while equipping it in an accessory slot plays the full credits sequence.
- For whatever reason, the Music Box cannot record the theme that plays when a Rainbow Boulder is active.
Tips
- Event and boss music may take multiple attempts to record, due to the random time required. Stretching these encounters for maximum time offers a better chance at a successful recording.
- Music Box (Torch God) is the only missable music box, as once a given character has consumed the Torch God's Favor, that character can no longer activate the Torch God event to record the music. If a player wishes to collect every music box, it is recommended that the Torch God not be fought until early Hardmode, when music boxes are first available.
- The Torch God can still be fought in a world by characters who have not consumed the Torch God’s Favor, so other characters or players may be used to record the box. The music box can also be recorded from existing music boxes.
- Music Box (Boss 5) is exclusive to the Mechdusa boss fight in the Zenith special seed.
Trivia
- Several Music Boxes have discrepancies between their sprites and their respective bosses or events:
- Despite being used for the Eye of Cthulhu, Music Box (Boss 1) appears to be a colored variant of Music Box (Dungeon).
- Despite now only used by Golem, Music Box (Boss 4) appears to be themed after Golden furniture, as it was the original Pirate Invasion theme prior to 1.3.
- Despite now only used by Mechdusa, Music Box (Boss 5) appears to be themed after Honey furniture, as it was Queen Bee's theme prior to 1.4.5.0.
- Despite now only used by the Frost Legion and Brain of Cthulhu, Music Box (Boss 3) appears to be themed after The Destroyer, as it was its theme prior to 1.4.5.0.
- Music Box (Corruption) and Music Box (Eerie) have identical designs, apart from color. The same is true for Music Box (Martian Madness) and Music Box (Lunar Boss), as well as Music Box (Boss 1) and Music Box (Dungeon).
- Music Box (Empress Of Light) has improper capitalization, with Of being capitalized.
- This also applies to the Can Of Worms, Hand Of Creation, and two paintings (Lady Of The Lake and This Is Getting Out Of Hand).
- Music Box (Alt Torch God) is the only track containing lyrics.
- The total amount of money needed to buy one of every Music Box is 8 PC40 GC, plus the craftable ones 3 PC10 GC.
- Music Box (Tutorial) was initially crafted with
Console-/
Mobile-exclusive Music Boxes. With the exception of Music Box (Tutorial) itself, these Music Boxes are no longer exclusive, as of 1.2. - Prior to 1.3.0.1, Music Box (Title) required the most number of ingredients of any crafting recipe in the game.
- The twelve Music Boxes required to craft Music Box (Title) contain the twelve tracks that were present as of the 1.1 update – originally the game's entire soundtrack. Its recipe remained unchanged as new tracks were added in 1.2 and beyond.
- The six Music Boxes required to craft Music Box (Alt Title) are in reference to the songs that were originally exclusive to Terraria's console editions. The Desert, Ice, and Boss 5 themes were integrated into the
Desktop version with the 1.2 update, with the remainder being integrated in 1.4.0.1. - The twelve Music Boxes needed to craft Music Box (Journey's Beginning) contain the twelve original tracks composed for the 1.4.0.1 update.
- The six Music Boxes required to craft Music Box (Alt Title) are in reference to the songs that were originally exclusive to Terraria's console editions. The Desert, Ice, and Boss 5 themes were integrated into the
- The Otherworldly music boxes are tracks from the cancelled Terraria: Otherworld.
- Music Box (Morning Rain) is a recycle of the Tutorial level song used in the
Console and pre-1.3
Mobile versions.
