The Nurse
The Nurse is an NPC who will move in once the following criteria have been met:
- There is an available vacant house.
- The player's maximum health is greater than 100.
- The Merchant is present.
The Nurse will fully restore the player's health and cure them of any active debuffs at the cost of coins (there are exceptions, see Notes and History).
Healing costs are 1 CC per health restored, plus an additional 1 SC per active debuff on the player, all multiplied by the Nurse's current Happiness price adjustment, and then doubled if playing on Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). Also, the Nurse charges increasing amounts of money for healing as the game progresses; these specific increases are listed below. Thus, at the start of the game, the cost of restoring 100 health can range from 75 CC / 1 SC50 CC (with maximum happiness) to 1 SC50 CC / 3 SC (with maximum unhappiness), while by endgame it can range from 1 GC50 SC / 3 GC up to 3 GC / 6 GC.
The Nurse will defend herself against nearby enemies by throwing green syringes that damage and poison enemies for 3–5 seconds. She can also throw red syringes to heal herself and other nearby NPCs for 20 health, which can also home in on targets.[2] She deals 8 / 12 / 14 damage at the start of the game, and gains various stat boosts as the player progresses.[1]
Price increases
The cost of healing changes based on three factors: The Nurse's current Happiness, game progression, and Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). Happiness affects the Nurse's price by raising or lowering it to within a range of 75% to 150% of its base (in the same way that other NPCs' prices are affected by their happiness). Playing in Expert (or Master(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)) mode further affects prices by permanently doubling them. Progression-based price increases are based on which bosses have been defeated in the current world. These increases are listed in the table below; only the single highest applicable increase is chosen and applied.
Event | Price Modifier[3] |
Cost of Healing 100HP[cost 1] | |||||

Hardmode entered | 60× | 60 SC | 1 GC20 SC | 45 SC | 90 SC | 90 SC | 1 GC80 SC |
Any mechanical boss beaten | 100× | 1 GC | 2 GC | 75 SC | 1 GC50 SC | 1 GC50 SC | 3 GC |
Plantera beaten | 150× | 1 GC50 SC | 3 GC | 1 GC12 SC50 CC | 2 GC25 SC | 2 GC25 SC | 4 GC50 SC |
Golem beaten | 200× | 2 GC | 4 GC | 1 GC50 SC | 3 GC | 3 GC | 6 GC |
- ↑ The cost of healing 100 health is also equal to the cost of healing 1 debuff. Thus, the cost of healing 100 health and 1 debuff is 2× what is shown in this table; 100 health and 2 debuffs is 3× what is shown; etc.

Shimmered form
When submerged in Shimmer, the Nurse will transform into her Shimmered form. This has no impact on gameplay or dialogue and is only a visual change. She can be returned to her classic look by submerging her in Shimmer again.
Notes
- If the player has an active debuff and is at full health, the heal option will also be available.
- If planning on healing and drinking Ale, make sure to drink the Ale after healing, as Tipsy is technically a debuff and will be cured by the Nurse.
- The Nurse can survive drowning forever due to the fact that she heals herself.
- The Nurse cannot remove Potion Sickness, Water Candle, and Creative Shock, nor does she charge extra for them.
- The Nurse cannot heal herself if the player is talking to her.
- If a healing syringe thrown by the Nurse does not hit her target, it will begin homing in on them.
Achievement

Tips
- The Nurse can be used as a "healing station" when at low health during a boss fight, by teleporting to the spawn point (using a Magic/Ice Mirror or one of its upgrades) where the Nurse is present. Autopause can be used to grant more time.

Trivia
- There appears to be conflict between the Nurse and the Mechanic during a Blood Moon. During this time, the Merchant has a chance of saying, "Oh, great. I can hear <name of Mechanic> and <name of Nurse> arguing from here."
- The Arms Dealer seemingly has romantic interest in her according to his quotes when the Nurse is present. This is also reflected in the Nurse's quote "Hey, has <name of Arms Dealer> mentioned needing to go to the doctor for any reason? Just wondering." The Nurse, through other NPC dialogue, is implied to already be in a romantic relationship with the Arms Dealer as noted by the Stylist in her quote, "Mhmm, I heard from <name of Party Girl> that <name of Mechanic>'s friend <name of Nurse> spent her boyfriend's last paycheck on shoes."
- The Nurse is depicted in a painting called "Nurse Lisa", a reference to the famous portrait painting Mona Lisa by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
- When talking to the Nurse while in a crowded area, she will say, "Hey, I dislike the lack of social distancing here." This is a reference to the COVID-19 pandemic that was ongoing at the time of Journey's End's launch, when the quote was introduced, and the "social distancing" practice people were encouraged to follow by staying six feet or two meters away from one another in public.
- During a Party(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), when the Nurse dons a party hat, her hairstyle is different. She wears it down instead of up in a ponytail:
This makes sense as wearing a party hat while having hair in a ponytail would be cumbersome.
- The Nurse's quote, "I don't give happy endings." is a reference to happy endings, the practice of masseuses offering sexual favors to their clients at the end of a massage for additional payment.
- The Nurse will not use this quote if the Blood and Gore setting is turned off.[3]
- Although the Zoologist is registered as hated by the Nurse, she does not seem to actually hate her. The dialogue indicates that the Nurse hates the Zoologist's unique anatomy more than the Zoologist herself: "Oh, I hate treating <name of Zoologist>, so difficult!"
- However, such a phrase is also often used to describe someone who is being difficult, such as refusing to be still while being given a shot.
- Her quote "I need to have a serious talk with <name of Guide>. How many times a week can you come in with severe lava burns?" most likely refers to the Guide Voodoo Doll being sacrificed in lava or being carried around by Voodoo Demons near pools of lava in the Underworld.
- Her interaction phrase "The monsters of <world name> have slain you <number of non-PvP deaths> times already? I wonder which one picked up your banner...", said when the player was slain between 25 and 99 times inclusive, refers to the fact that most enemies can drop a banner if slain every 50th time, and a few rarer ones drop banners if slain every 25th time.
- The
Bestiary entry for the Nurse: "The Nurse's snarky attitude and poor bedside manner may be scary, but for a price, she will cure all that ails a wounded Terrarian."
