Plants (Plants/ja)

From Terraria Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
For trees growing all across a Terraria world, see Trees.

Plants are found all across a Terraria world, and may grow from certain block/ja types given various conditions. Most can be harvested for use, and may additionally drop seeds/ja for replanting, such as Jungle grass and Jungle grass seeds. Different biome/jas generally have distinct plant life.

Grass

Grass is a type of block which covers most of the above-ground landscape. It enables many different plants to grow on it.

Natural grass types

These types of grass occur naturally throughout the world. They can also be planted manually with their respective seeds. Regular grass can furthermore be planted with the Staff of Regrowth or Axe of Regrowth(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

If there is room below a grass block, the respective type of vine can grow downward from it. Acorns planted in grass (except Mushroom grass) will grow into the respective type of tree.

Wild plants on grass

These weeds and flowers grow naturally on the different types of grass on the surface. They do not grow below the surface (except on Jungle, Mushroom, and Ash grass), and do not grow on mowed grass. Plants growing on painted grass blocks will take on the block's color.

Some of these plants can be planted manually with Flower Seeds(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Flower Boots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and the Rubblemaker(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). The rest cannot be planted manually.

Spread

This section is about grass spreading onto bare soils. For details about grass types converting other grass types, see Biome spread § Grass.

Grass of any type spreads from existing blocks to other blocks of the correct soil type. The following restrictions apply:

  • Pure, mowed, and mowed Hallowed grass does not spread below the surface whatsoever.[2] The player needs to be at least at 4 feet (on the Depth Meter) on the surface for these types of grass underneath to be able to spread.
  • Grass only spreads to an adjacent block, i.e., a block within the eight tiles directly surrounding the grass block.
  • Grass does not spread to blocks that have lava in one of their adjacent tiles (with the exception of Ash grassVerify).
  • Grass only spreads to blocks that have at least one tile of open space within their adjacent tiles (i.e., grass does not spread to blocks that are fully surrounded by eight solid blocks).

Additionally:

  • Dirt Blocks and Mud Blocks are both eligible soils for both types of the evil grasses. For instance, Corrupt Jungle grass can spread onto Dirt Blocks (resulting in regular Corrupt grass), and regular Corrupt grass can spread onto Mud Blocks (resulting in Corrupt Jungle grass).
  • The mowed grasses also spread to adjacent Dirt Blocks (only above the surface), but the resulting new grass will not be mowed.
  • Painted grass will spread its paint, too.
  • Corruption and Crimson thorny bushes can create Corrupt/Crimson grass on adjacent Dirt Blocks (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Corrupt/Crimson Jungle grass on adjacent Mud Blocks.

Tips

  • When mining blocks with grass, the grass will absorb the first hit from the pickaxe/drill. Hence, unlike mining most blocks, a tool with high mining speed will actually always outperform a slower tool, even if the slower one has higher pickaxe power. This means that the best pre-Hardmode item for digging grass would be the Bone Pickaxe. In theory, the Shroomite Digging Claw(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) has the best speed out of the Hardmode tools.
    • This becomes particularly important in the Jungle biome, due to the prevalence of Jungle grass.

Trivia

Examples of the two unused grass graphics.
  • There are unused graphics for two other grass types in the game's files. One is a yellow-green grass akin to Jungle grass, although it is tiled on dirt. Its internal name Tiles_2_Beach.png implies that it was originally intended for the Ocean. The second is a variation of Flesh Blocks, tiled to work as a grass.
    • Crimson grass is referred to as FleshGrass internally, so the second grass variation may have been an early Crimson grass sprite.

Moss

Moss/ja is a grass-like plant that grows on Stone Block/jas. It comes in several different colors and can be found either randomly on cave surfaces or in moss chamber/jas with a matching mossy wall. Moss sprouts fuzz that can be cut like grass weeds. On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, it can be collected as an item using a Paint Scraper/ja and used for replanting or crafting mossy walls.

Mushrooms

This article is about the class of plants "mushrooms". For the biome, see Glowing Mushroom biome.

Mushrooms are plants which grow randomly on many grasses and other blocks. There are 6 types of mushrooms:

Regular Mushrooms can be turned into Vile Mushrooms and vice versa using Purification Powder, Unholy Water, or Holy Water, respectively.

Vines

Vines
Vines.png Jungle vines.png Hallowed vines.png Crimson vines.png Flower vines.png Mushroom vines.png
Regular vine Jungle vine Hallowed vine Crimson vine Flower vine Mushroom vine
"Vines" redirects here. For the item dropped by Man Eater/jas, see Vine.

Vines are plants that grow downward from blocks. Given there is enough empty space, they can reach a length of up to ten tiles. Although they block light(excluding Glowing Mushroom vines, which produce light), they do not impede movement and can easily be destroyed with nearly any weapon/ja or tool/ja. Destroying a tile of a vine destroys all tiles of the vine below it and destroying the topmost tile or mining the block it hangs from will destroy the entire vine.

There are six different types of vines: Regular vines (growing from Grass/ja and Leaf Block/jas), Flower vines (growing from Grass/ja in grassy caves, or in front of player-placed Grass/ja or Flower/ja walls), Jungle vines (growing from Jungle grass/ja blocks), Glowing Mushroom vines (growing from Mushroom grass/ja), Hallowed vines (growing from Hallowed grass/ja blocks), and Crimson vines (growing from Crimson grass/ja blocks). There is no Corruption variant of vines. Vines can only grow above the surface/ja (with the exception of Jungle and Glowing Mushroom vines which can grow at any elevation) and only from blocks that are not sloped/ja on their underside.

Vines can be paint/jaed. New vines growing from painted blocks will take on the color of that block and vine tiles spawned by naturally extending vines will take on the color of the existing tip of the vine. In Hardmode/ja, Crimson and Hallowed vines qualify as spreading tiles in regard to biome spread/ja. The Guide to Plant Fiber Cordage(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) allows the collection of Vine Rope(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) from vines.

Vines will never drop the Vine/ja object; this is an uncommon Man Eater/ja drop. In spite of this, Glowing Mushroom vines will drop Glowing Mushrooms/ja when destroyed.

Cattails

Forest cattails in a lake./ja

Cattails are plants that grow naturally on blocks submerged underwater 1-7 blocks deep. They are background objects and can be destroyed with most weapons/ja or tools/ja, but only Glowing Mushroom cattails yield drops. They can grow up to 1 tile above the surface of the water. Destroying a tile of the cattail will destroy all tiles of the cattail above it and destroying the base or block it's attached to will completely destroy the cattail.

There are 6 types of cattails: Regular cattails (growing from Grass/ja), Jungle cattails (growing from Jungle grass/ja and Sand Blocks/ja in an Oasis/ja), Hallowed cattails (growing from Hallowed grass/ja), Glowing Mushroom cattails (growing from Mushroom grass/ja), Corruption cattails (growing from Corrupt grass/ja) and Crimson cattails (growing from Crimson grass/ja). Excluding Glowing Mushroom cattails, cattails can only grow above surface level.

Glowing Mushroom cattails drop Glowing Mushroom/jas when destroyed.

Lily pads are plants that grow on the water's surface above suitable blocks. They are background objects and are destroyed by most weapons/ja and tools/ja.

There are 5 types of lily pads with 18 variants each adding up to a total of 90 lily pads. These are: Regular lily pads (above Grass/ja), Jungle lily pads (above Jungle grass/ja and Sand Blocks/ja in an Oasis/ja), Hallowed lily pads (above Hallowed grass/ja), Corruption lily pads (above Corrupt grass/ja) and Crimson lily pads (above Crimson grass/ja).

Cactus

Cactus grows naturally on Sand Blocks/ja in the Desert/ja biome/ja, and persists even if the Desert becomes infected with Corruption/ja, Crimson/ja, or Hallow/ja. They can be cut down with any axe/ja and can be used to make cacti-themed weapons/ja, armor/ja, furniture/ja, or just be placed and used as a building material. Occasionally, a Pink Prickly Pear/ja will grow on top of a cactus. In 1.3.5.3(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and before, mining the Sand Block underneath a cactus will cause the entire plant to drop, but since 1.4.0.1(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) this is no longer possible.

Jungle Vegetation

Jungle vegetation are plants that grow naturally on Mud Block/jas in the Jungle/ja and Underground Jungle/ja biomes.

Destroying vegetation in a Surface/ja or Underground Jungle/ja Biome has a chance to spawn various Bait/ja Critter/jas that can be collected with the Bug Net/ja (Worm/ja, Grasshopper/ja, Grubby/ja, Sluggy/ja, Buggy/ja).

Thorny bushes

"Thorn" redirects here. For the magic weapon obtained during a Blood Moon, see Blood Thorn. For the potion granting the Thorns buff, see Thorns Potion.

Thorny bushes or thorns grow naturally in the Corruption/ja, Crimson/ja and Underground Jungle/ja, and will damage any player on contact. There are currently three types of thorny bushes: brown bushes from the Underground Jungle/ja deal 17 base damage; purple and red bushes from the Corruption and Crimson, respectively, deal 10 base damage.[2] Thorny bushes are destroyed after contact with a weapon/ja, tool/ja or the player, but invisible projectiles (Medusa Head/ja, Life Drain/ja, etc.) do not destroy them. All NPCs/ja and enemies/ja are immune to them, and they cannot be obtained as an item. Thorny bushes can grow six tiles in all directions, although their growth is blocked by solid objects and various other scenery. The purple and red variants spread the Corruption/Crimson; the brown variant, however, does not spread Jungle grass.
