Possession against a Unicorn and a Target Dummy group. Note the effects upon summon hits.

Possession is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord whip with a tag effect of +25 damage, and it has a 5% multihit penalty. It also grants minions and sentries a fixed 10% chance to deal critical hits to tagged enemies. In addition, it has a special effect of marking enemies with prophetic energy on hit. When a minion or sentry damages an enemy marked by Possession, it spawns a vision around the enemy, which fires a beam towards the target that deals 20 damage and has 50 armor penetration, but does not inflict knockback. Uniquely among whips, it attacks four times per use.

Possession has a 1/5 (20%) chance of being dropped by the Moon Lord.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes

  • The prophetic energy expires after its effect triggers once, meaning the enemy must be tagged again to reapply it.[1]
    • The 25 tag damage and 10% crit chance still last for the usual 4 seconds tag duration however, and do not immediately expire upon hit.
  • If the vision beam spawned by a minion or sentry attack successfully hits an enemy, it causes a second vision to spawn and fire a beam at that enemy, and if the second vision beam also hits a target, a followup third one will spawn and do the same. No further visions can spawn without reapplying the prophetic energy, meaning a maximum of 3 visions can spawn with each proc assuming perfect accuracy on the beams.[2]
  • The vision beams are internally considered melee projectiles, meaning they can critically strike using the player's melee crit chance and benefit from melee effects such as flasks and Sharpening Station's armor penetration.[3]
