Potions

Potions are consumable items that either recover the user's health and/or mana either instantaneously or over time, or grant temporary buffs or debuffs to the user. Potions are commonly found in natural Chests and Pots, can be dropped by enemies, purchased from NPCs, or crafted. Most potions can be crafted at a Placed Bottle or Alchemy Table, but flasks must be crafted at an Imbuing Station.

By pressing Quick Buff, Quick Heal, Quick Mana, the player can quickly consume respective potions (buff potions, health potions, and mana potions) from their inventory or open Void Bag(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), without actually opening their inventory. When quick using buff potions, only potions whose buff is not active will be consumed. When quick using health or mana potions, the potion that recovers most health/mana will be consumed.

Potion buffs can be canceled at any time by right-clicking the buff icon (), by selecting the buff icon and canceling it in the equipment menu (), by selecting the buff with + / then canceling the buff with ( ), by double-tapping the buff icon (), or by canceling the buff from the buffs screen (). All potion buffs (including food buffs, but excluding flask buffs) are lost when dying.

In Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), most potions require 20 items to be researched. Recovery potions require 30 items.

Recovery potions

These are potions that restore health, mana, or even both at the same time. They are limited in use by the Potion Sickness and Mana Sickness debuffs, respectively. The Potion Sickness debuff duration can be reduced with a Charm of Myths or a Philosopher's Stone.

Food and drink potions

Main article: Food

Consuming foods will grant the Well Fed, Plenty Satisfied, or Exquisitely Stuffed buff, which all provide general stat bonuses.

Buff potions

These are potions that grant the character a temporary, usually short-lived buff when consumed. They are crafted at a Placed Bottle or an Alchemy Table. Pressing the Quick Buff key will consume one of each of the player's buff potions in their inventory.

Flasks

These are potions that grant the character a temporary melee and whips-specific buff when consumed, which allows melee weapons and whips to inflict a specific debuff. Only one flask buff can be active at a time. Crafted at an Imbuing Station.

Trivia

• Certain potions' sprites use bottles that correlate with real-life flasks. These include:
  • All of the Lesser potions, using an Erlenmeyer flask.
  • The Strange Brew, using a Florence flask.
  • The Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, and Gills Potions all use test tubes.
  • The in-game flasks are slight modifications of the round-bottom flasks with special stoppers.
  • All other potions seem to be extreme modifications of the Dewar flask or Erlenmeyer flask.
• All potions (excluding the Recovery potions) use a glass stopper.
• On 3DS, if the player quickly uses a potion right after they leave their inventory, the potion will be used, but not consumed. However, the buff/debuff from it will only last 1 minute. Note that this might not work every time.
• (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Some potions can only be crafted in worlds with the proper evil biome:
  • Thorns and Wrath Potions can only be crafted in worlds with Corruption ingredients.
  • Heartreach and Rage Potions can only be crafted in worlds with Crimson ingredients.
  • Both the Heartreach and Thorns Potions can be found in Chests, regardless of world type. Additionally, Heartreach Potions can be found in crates. However, this represents a limited (non-renewable) supply for Thorn Potions.
  • Of these four potions, only the Heartreach Potion can be obtained from crates.

On the  Desktop version,  Console version, and  Mobile version, it is possible to create the other evil biome by purchasing the seeds from the Dryad.

History

 Desktop version

• Desktop 1.4.0.1: Changed buff potion durations. Added 61 food items.

• Desktop 1.3.0.1: Super Healing Potions, Strange Brew, Bacon, Gender Change Potion, and Wormhole Potions added. All potions were given new sprites.

• Desktop 1.2.4: There are now 22 new potions you can craft from Fishing and/or Shiverthorn related materials.
