Not to be confused with Naughty Present or Party Present.

The Present is a grab bag item available during the Christmas seasonal event which contains a random Christmas-themed reward. It can be opened by pressing the Open / Activate button on it in the player's inventory, similar to all other grab bags. Presents can be opened anytime, even outside the Christmas season.

Presents are dropped with a 1/13 (7.69%) chance by any enemy that has more than 1 maximum health, deals more than 0 damage, and drops coins, during Christmas only.[1] Therefore, enemies spawned by statues, enemies from the Old One's Army and Lunar Events, Meteor Heads, and Slimers with wings can never drop Presents.

Presents can be placed down as furniture. Although they always appear as blue in the player's inventory, placed Presents take on a random appearance out of eight possible varieties.

Drops

Presents always only drop one item, with the exception of the Red Ryder, which drops together with Musket Balls, and the three vanity sets, which each include all three items of the set.[2]

Unobtainable Presents

Before version 1.2.2, there were three variants of the Present item. They are unobtainable since then, but were not removed from the player's inventory or storage items after the update, and as such can be opened to this day. They retain their functionality from before 1.2.2, meaning they have a much more limited drop pool[3] and can neither be stacked nor placed.

Tips

  • Presents can easily be farmed during events that spawn many enemies, like the Solar Eclipse.
  • Early on in the game, another easy way to farm for Presents is to defeat the Eater of Worlds multiple times.

Trivia

  • Mobile version When Presents were initially introduced, nearly any item could erroneously drop from them.[4] This glitch has since been fixed.
  • One of the variations of a placed Present has the same colors as the unobtainable Green Present item.

History

  • Desktop 1.2.2:
    • Blue Present, Green Present, and Yellow Present (item IDs 599–601) no longer drop. Any of these still in the player's storage or inventory remain unchanged.
    • Enemies now always drop the same "Present" item (item ID 1869) instead of the previous Blue, Green, and Yellow Presents.
    • Now stackable.
    • Now placeable, with eight different color variations when placed.
    • Presents now contain a larger assortment of possible drops. Previously they only contained Candy Cane Blocks, Green Candy Cane Blocks, or a Snow Globe.
