Plant

Pumpkin growth stages.

The pumpkin plant can be planted manually on normal and Hallowed grass (including the mowed versions) with Pumpkin Seeds sold by the Dryad, and also grows naturally on the surface during the Halloween and Oktoberfest(3DS version) seasonal events. Pumpkin plants can be harvested using almost any weapon or tool, which causes Pumpkin items to drop.

Pumpkin Seeds need 2 blocks width and 2 blocks height of clear space to grow.

Harvesting fully grown pumpkins during the Halloween season will rarely yield a Magical Pumpkin Seed, which is used to summon the Squashling pet.

Notes

  • Pumpkin growth consists of five stages. A Pumpkin plant will not yield Pumpkins during the first two stages (i.e., while it is fully green). More Pumpkins will be harvested in later stages:[1]
Stage Drop chance Drop amount Avg. yield
1 n/a
2 n/a
3 1/2 (50%) 1–2 0.75
4 100% 2–5 3.5
5 100% 5–10 7.5
  • Harvesting Pumpkins will not yield Pumpkin Seeds (except possibly the Magical Pumpkin Seed pet). These seeds can only be bought from the Dryad.
  • Pumpkins can only grow on pure and Hallowed grass (including their mowed versions), not on any other type of grass. However, due to the biome spread of the evil biomes, it is possible for Pumpkins to be on Corrupt/Crimson grass.
  • A Pumpkin can only grow naturally if there are at most five other Pumpkins within 100 tiles horizontally and vertically.[2] This means that the maximum density of naturally generated Pumpkins in a 200×200-tile rectangle is five.
  • The Staff of Regrowth cannot be used to harvest and destroy naturally grown Pumpkins.
  • Pumpkins can only grow on the surface layer.
  • Pumpkins can grow in front of background walls.
  • Pumpkins can be harvested by any means (such as Actuators) in order to obtain the Magical Pumpkin Seed.
  • Like most plants that grow on grass, pumpkins cannot grow on dirt, and can only grow on grass.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Fully grown Pumpkins are destroyed when swinging a weapon or tool nearby, or hitting them with a projectile.[3]

Tips

  • An easy way to farm Pumpkins during the Halloween season is to place strips of grass with Dart Traps firing just above them to destroy anything naturally growing on top of the grass. This will allow Pumpkins to grow instead, as Dart Traps do not destroy Pumpkins.
    • Dedicated farming, like with this method, may cause the Magical Pumpkin Seed to be obtained much faster.
  • It may be a good idea to start farming Pumpkins in pre-Hardmode so the player has access to a stock of Pumpkins for Pumpkin Moon Medallions in Hardmode.
  • Making a new world during Halloween can give the player an edge in the early game, as Pumpkins spawn naturally, and the Pumpkin armor made from them can last all the way until the Eye of Cthulhu.
  • Growing pumpkins from seed is not profitable; during Halloween naturally-spawned pumpkins can best be sold as candelabras.

History

  • Desktop 1.3.4.2: Fixed a bug where pumpkin plants got cut when swinging nearby items or projectiles at them.
  • 3DS-Release: Introduced alongside all corresponding furniture and items up to Desktop 1.2.4.
