The Queen Bee is a pre-Hardmode boss. She is summoned by breaking the Larva inside Bee Hives in the Underground Jungle, or by using an Abeemination anywhere within the Jungle. Fighting the Queen Bee is not required for game progression, but defeating her rewards the player with useful items and weapons and allows the Witch Doctor NPC to move into an available vacant house.
While the Queen Bee is alive, the music Boss 5 will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 1 (Otherworldly) will play instead.
Behavior
The Queen Bee has three distinct attack patterns:
- The Queen Bee levels herself horizontally with the player before flying back and forth three times in an attempt to ram the player. Upon being summoned, she will always use this attack first.
- The Queen Bee spawns Bees while hovering (which includes larger ones in Expert Mode), which pursue and attack the player. During this attack, she may spawn 6, 12, or 18 bees.
- The Queen Bee rapidly fires large yellow stingers at the player which visibly pulsate to indicate their location, similarly to Hornets. The stingers have a 1/3 (33.33%) / 100% chance of inflicting the Poisoned debuff for 10 / 2–20 / 2.5–25 seconds. During this attack, the Queen Bee alternates between hovering above the player and positioning herself to swoop in at the player from above.
In Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the speed of these attacks increases as the Queen Bee's health lowers and her charges increase both in speed and number. At low enough health, the Queen Bee can perform up to six charges in a row before switching to a different attack. The Queen Bee's defense also increases up to a maximum of 28 depending on how much of her health has been depleted.[1] Additionally, she will inflict the Poisoned debuff upon direct contact with the player for 2–8 / 2.5–10 seconds.
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) When fought outside of the Underground Jungle, the Queen Bee enrages, causing her movements to become more aggressive and firing stingers at a much faster rate. When fought in the Surface Jungle, the Queen Bee still enrages, but this state is less aggressive than if the player were to fight her in any other surface biome.
Notes
- Unlike most other bosses, the Queen Bee does not despawn when far away from the player and moves towards the player instead.
- This means if a player teleports, such as by using a Magic Mirror, the Queen Bee chases them across the map no matter the distance. If the player teleports outside of the Jungle, she will enrage and may kill the player.
- In multiplayer, if all players fighting the Queen Bee die at the same time and any other players are alive at the time, the Queen Bee pursues the other players regardless of distance and will only swap aggro to a different player on the death of her current target.
- The only way to properly despawn the Queen Bee outside of killing it is for all players in the world to die at once.
- The Larva can be broken with any damaging weapon, similar to a Pot, so many actions such as the Orichalcum armor's set bonus or a Star Cloak can break the Larva, causing the Queen Bee to be unintentionally spawned.
- This is especially common if there are remaining Larvae within the Jungle late into the game when it is possible to hit anything anywhere on the screen, even behind solid blocks. It is also possible early in the game if the player is using a whip, which can break things behind solid blocks.
- Larvae are unaffected by the Guide to Environmental Preservation(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and its upgrades.
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, Bees spawned from Bee Hives, from mined Hive blocks, and from the Queen Bee herself will actively target other enemies and deal damage to them while also taking damage from them. When at least one Bee exists, the Queen Bee will also be able to damage and take damage from other enemies. However, the Queen Bee only actively targets players.
- Bees do not drop Souls of Light, Souls of Night, Biome Keys(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), or Biome Key Molds(Old-gen console and 3DS versions).
- In multiplayer, the Queen Bee will despawn upon the death of all players just like any other boss, and will not follow them back to their spawn points.
- Occasionally, a Bee Hive may be large enough to possess two or more Larvae, especially in Drunk world(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) secret seeds. If a player is using bouncing weapons such as the Water Bolt, they must be wary of the additional Larvae, lest they be targeted by more newly summoned Queen Bees.
- The amount of bees the Queen Bee can summon is not infinite, as 173 bees are the maximum amount of bees that can be alive at once.
Achievements
Tips
- The Honey naturally found in Bee Hives can be used to craft Bottled Honey, provide passive health regeneration mid-fight, and help to negate the potency of being afflicted by Poisoned. However, standing in Honey will slow down the player significantly, so prolonged submersion is not recommended.
- Equipping a Bezoar can help the player avoid taking large amounts of damage from being afflicted with Poisoned, especially in Expert and Master Mode due to its significantly extended duration, where it can reach upwards of 25 seconds.
- The Bees do little damage, but can easily become an annoyance as they can push the player around. If the player does not have a Cobalt Shield or Obsidian Shield to avoid knockback, any grappling hook can be used to anchor the player to blocks.
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, in Classic difficulty, a spinning Flail is sufficient to kill any incoming Bees before they can reach the player.
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, Bees will target other enemies if they are closer than the player and can thus be distracted with statue-spawned mobs or other trapped monsters.
- In Expert and Master Mode, Bees are much tougher and can easily kill the player if ignored.
- The Lightning Aura sentry summons and the Explosive Trap sentry summons can easily kill the bees if the player is near them.
- The Queen Bee can be a viable source of money, dropping 5 GC upon death and additional profit from her drops, as well as being comparably simple to summon.
- (Old-gen console version) The Queen Bee should be farmed by summoner class players to craft a set of Bee armor, which is the only pre-Hardmode summoner armor set.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The Obsidian armor is a better choice for summoners looking to focus on whips.
- If the Shield of Cthulhu's dash is timed well, the damage of the Queen Bee's ramming attacks can be blocked. However, this strategy will become less reliable over time due to the Queen Bee's speed ramping up significantly as her health is lowered.
- For ranged players, any bow in combination with piercing arrows (such as Unholy or Jester's Arrows) can be a good choice for quickly dispatching the summoned Bees.
Trivia
- The Queen Bee has the largest number of drops of any pre-Hardmode boss in the game at 15. Furthermore, she has the second-most drops of any boss, surpassed only by Plantera (a boss that is also spawned in the Underground Jungle), who has 16.
- Assuming that the player is 5′ 9″ (1.75 m) in terms of height, the Queen Bee would be about 7′ 10½″ (2.41 m) tall and wide.
- If the player moves too far from the Queen Bee, she will charge until she reaches them.
- (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Strangely, although being able to inflict the Poisoned debuff, the Queen Bee is not immune to it.
- Although rare, it is possible to obtain the Yelets(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) from the Queen Bee if she is defeated after one of the mechanical bosses has been killed.
- The concept art of the Queen Bee from prior to her introduction looks vastly different than the sprite that was implemented. It bears resemblance to a Hornet.
- (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The Queen Bee is the only boss that cannot be fought an infinite number of times per world, due to her summons being non-renewable. There is a limited number of both larvae to directly summon the boss and Hive blocks to craft the Abeemination.
- The Desktop, Console, and Mobile-exclusive Bottomless Honey Bucket and Shimmer allow for creating infinite Honey Blocks and Hive blocks.
- The Queen Bee is one of seven bosses with exclusive boss music, the others being Deerclops, Queen Slime, Empress of Light, Plantera, Duke Fishron, and Moon Lord.
- However, the Old-gen console and -exclusive boss Ocram reuses her music. On older updates of the Mobile version, as well as on the Old-gen console version, the Eye of Cthulhu also reuses her music. This makes her the only boss with exclusive music whose music is not exclusive on all versions.
- The Bestiary entry for the Queen Bee: "This highly aggressive monstrosity responds violently when her larva is disturbed; the honey-laden hives are her home turf."
