Storage items

Storage items are furniture items that can contain items separate from the player's inventory. They are accessed using Open / Activate and usually contain 40 item stacks in rows of Desktop version 10×4 / Console versionMobile version 8×5.

Types

Placed storage items
Dressers are storage items on Desktop version Desktop, Console version Console, and Mobile version Mobile only

Storage items are functionally split into three types: stationary, portable, and display storage.

The stationary storage items are Chests, Dressers, the Barrel, and the Trash Can.

The portable storage items are the Piggy Bank, Safe, Defender's Forge(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Void Vault(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Void Bag(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Money Trough(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Eye Bone(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

The display storage items are the Plate, Mannequin, Womannequin, Item Frame, Weapon Rack, and Hat Rack(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). These have their own special uses and are not conventional storage items by definition, so information on this page may not always apply to them.

Feature Stationary Portable Notes
Mined and moved with items inside? ✔️
  • Stationary storage items cannot be destroyed in any way in-game if they are not empty. It is also impossible to destroy the two blocks underneath them.
  • The inventories of portable storage items still exist even if their respective placed/summon item is gone.
Character-bound? ✔️
  • Portable storage items are saved with character data and therefore can be carried over to other worlds. Furthermore, when a Hardcore character dies, all items in their portable storage will be deleted with the character.
  • Conversely, the above traits do not apply to stationary storage items, as their contents are saved with the world data.
Remote money access? ✔️
  • I.e. if the player can pay for NPC goods or services using the stored coins.
Public storage? ✔️
  • The contents in stationary storage items can be accessed by other players in multiplayer. While one player is accessing them, no other players may.
  • The contents in portable storage items can never be accessed by other players. Multiple players can access a single portable storage item at one time.
Separate inventories? ✔️
  • I.e. if multiple instances of the storage item share the same inventory. For example, multiple placed Safes do not offer the player more storage space, as each Safe accesses the same shared 40-slot inventory, but having multiple Safes will give the player more points of access to their contents. This applies to all portable storage items.
  • The Piggy Bank, Money Trough, and Eye Bone share the same inventory.
Can be renamed? ✔️

Functions

Storage items and the player's inventory have special functions that improve organization.

Function Description Notes
Loot All
Moves all items from the storage item (starting from the top-left) into the player's inventory (starting from the bottom-right).
Deposit All
Opposite of Loot All. Moves all items from the player's inventory (starting from the bottom-right) into the storage item (starting from the top-left).
Quick Stack
Detects all items in the player's inventory that can be stacked with the same item inside the storage item, and moves it into the storage item.
Restock
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Opposite of Quick Stack. Detects all items in the storage item that can be stacked with the same item inside the player's inventory, and moves it into the player's inventory.
Sort Items
Desktop versionConsole version
Orders every item in the storage item by category.
  • Sorting is done in the same way the player's inventory is sorted; see Inventory § Sorting for details.
Rename
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Allows the player to type in a new name for the storage item. Hovering the cursor over a renamed storage item will display its name, and this name will also be shown on the minimap when hovering the cursor over its tile.
Quick Stack to Nearby Chests
Used via the Desktop version Quick Stack to Nearby Chests.png / Mobile version Quick Stack to Nearby Chests (mobile).png button.
Can be toggled by Desktop version pressing Open / Activate on the Similar Stack to Nearby Chests.png button / Mobile version by a button in the Tools menu.
It detects all items in the player's inventory that can be stacked with the same item inside all nearby storage items, and moves it into all nearby storage items.
  • This should be equivalent to pressing Quick Stack on each storage item.
  • Despite the description, it works with any storage item, whether stationary or portable.
  • It can move items to storage items in a 36-tile radius around the player.Verify
  • When multiple storage items contain the same item, the item is always placed in the storage item that is positioned vertically lower in the world.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Has a visual effect showing the items which are being quick stacked moving towards the chests they go into.
Similar Stack to Nearby Chests
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Used via the Desktop version Similar Stack to Nearby Chests.png button.
Can be toggled by Desktop version pressing Open / Activate on the Quick Stack to Nearby Chests.png button / Mobile version by a button in the Tools menu.
As an alternative mode to Quick Stack to Nearby Chests, it functions similarly to Quick Stack to Nearby Chests, but the game also attempts to store similar items with each other (e.g. ores with ores, blocks with blocks, and weapons with weapons).
  • In practice, players may find this stacking style too broad and/or inconsistent. For example, the player may not intend for Campfires to be stacked with Tombstones, although the game classifies them both as furniture.

Notes

  • Chests have a unique ability to pick up dropped items within a 12×12-tile area centered on them when receiving a wire signal.
  • There is a maximum limit of 8000 storage items (excluding portable and display storage itemsVerify) in each world. Attempts to place additional storage items will result in the item immediately dropping to the ground as an item rather than being placed.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Portable storage items will always be prioritized when using Quick Stack, with the exception of the Void Bag as it is functionally an extension of the player's inventory.

Tips

  • Moving coins the player gathers into Portable Storage periodically is useful, especially when exploring new or hazardous areas. Coins stored there will not be lost in case of death, even if the Portable Storage device containing them is in the player's inventory at the time.
  • This content is transcluded from Guide:Practical tips § Storage items. Each type of storage item has unique use cases. All portable storage items retain their items when broken. The player can put them into their inventory and place them at any time for access. Regularly stashing coins in a personal storage item is helpful to prevent having to retrieve it when one dies; this stash is also automatically withdrawn to pay for NPC purchases. The inventory of a portable storage item is unique for each player.
