I hope it doesn't rain again until this paint dries. That would be a disaster!

The visual effects of a Blizzard.

Rain is an event that occurs randomly[a] and affects all surface biomes for its duration. It can last anywhere between 8 minutes[b] and 61 minutes 30 seconds[c] (potentially spanning both day and night portions); the average duration is 19 minutes 50 seconds[d].[1] When a player is in a Snow biome during Rain, it appears as a Blizzard, causing snowfall volume to increase. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Additionally, a special visual effect is displayed during Blizzards.

Rain is primarily an aesthetic effect, only visible on the surface: It displays Rain/Blizzard graphics, darkened ambient sun/moon light, increased cloud cover, and altered music. There are, however, some functional effects.

The event spawns variants of some regular enemies, but also a few unique enemies, and certain critters behave differently. Some comical effects include Zombies wearing raincoats, slimes carrying umbrellas, and Goldfish walking upright on land, using their tail fins to casually shuffle about (swimming Goldfish will exit water and walk, and walking Goldfish will also spawn on land).

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, Rain has three different variations; Light Rain, regular Rain, and Heavy Rain. The heavier the rainfall, the dimmer the sunlight will be, with Heavy Rain causing noticeable darkness. These variations are only graphical, can be detected with a Weather Radio, and can change multiple times throughout a single downpour. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) If a Windy Day occurs at the same time as regular or Heavy Rain, it will result in a Thunderstorm.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, the chance for Rain to occur can be boosted by killing regular Ladybugs[2].

Rain does not produce new water tiles, nor does it cause existing water levels to rise, and it has no effect on lava or honey tiles.

Other effects include the following:

  • There is a +20% Fishing Power bonus in all liquid bodies during Rain.
  • Waterleaf blooms.
  • Worms spawn frequently in Forest biomes.
  • NPCs remain in their houses, as if it were night.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The player character will squint in Blizzards if they are outside.

Occurrence

Rain cannot be initiated manually, it always occurs randomly. In Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), however, Rain can be controlled freely via the Power Menu.

The chances fluctuate irregularly between 1 in 475,200 and roughly 1 in 345,600 per tick[3]. Throughout a full in-game day, the chance of Rain can be anywhere between 18.2% and 25%. This is equivalent to Rain occurring every 4 to 5.5 in-game days, or every hour and 36 minutes to 2 hours and 12 minutes in real-world time.

Immediately after world generation, the chance of Rain occurring is locked at 18.2% and does not fluctuate for between 2 minutes and 24 seconds and 24 minutes.[4]

Killing regular Ladybugs(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or using them in fishing will increase the chance of Rain to occur per tick by 1 in 86400. The chance boost lasts for 30 seconds, and multiple Ladybugs will stack the duration up to 300 seconds[5].

Notes

  • Normal Snow biome enemies will continue to spawn during a Blizzard.
  • Rain can interfere with a Blood Moon or Solar Eclipse because of the additional enemies that spawn, making certain enemies from those events rarer.
  • If Rain coincides with a Blood Moon, walking Goldfish will still turn into Corrupt Goldfish, which do not walk upright in Rain like normal Goldfish do.
  • The Weather Radio(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) will detect if it is raining on surface (regardless of the player's position).
  • The rainfall animation is blocked by blocks. This makes no difference to the blooming of Waterleaf, but does prevent the spawning of Worms.
  • When Deerclops(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is alive, the opacity of the Blizzard visual effect will be reduced.

Trivia

  • There was once going to be a "rain accumulation" mechanic, which would make the rain flood holes, bunkers, and similar structures. The player would then have to build systems to get rid of the water.[6] This mechanic was later scrapped.
  • Desktop version Rain's animation stops when the screen is exited in windowed mode (unlike other animations).
  • When it is raining and snowing at the same time, the snow animation stops, but not the rain animation.
  • The rain effect caused by Rain Cloud is unrelated to the Rain event and is purely aesthetic.
  • If Rain coincides with a Blood Moon, Rain will appear to be red-colored.
  • Old-gen console version If the game is exited to the title screen during Rain, the background will show fog. This happens even when going into a new world and exiting again. To remove the effects, the game needs to be closed.
  • In the old Mobile version Mobile version, Console version Console version, and Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, the Morning Rain music used to be exclusive through the Tutorial. It has since been implemented into the Desktop version Desktop version as the Morning Rain theme.

  3. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
  4. Information taken from the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.3.6 source code, method UpdateTime() in Terraria.Main.cs. There are three conditions in this method where StartRain() is called. The second condition, which causes the chance to fluctuate, requires the variable cloudBGactive to be positive. That variable is set to a random negative value upon world generation and gets increased every tick. There may be inaccuracies, as the current Desktop version Desktop version is 1.4.4.9.
