Roller Skates are a pre-Hardmode mount-summoning item that can be purchased from the Traveling Merchant or Skeleton Merchant. There are four different color variants with identical functionalities. They greatly alter the player's movement physics while mounted:

Notes

  • Their minimum, or coasting, speed matches the player's current block placement speed. By default, this is 9 mph. Because tile placement speed is capped to 300%,[1] the theoretical maximum coasting speed is 27 mph.
  • The coasting speed can be increased by the High Spirits buff, Builder Potion buff, Brick Layer or its upgrades, or by having used the Ambrosia item.
  • The Brick Layer and its upgrades do not stack to increase minimum speed.
    • Note that the placement speed from the Brick Layer will only apply while holding a non-Torch block.[2] This behavior also means that there is no bonus without holding a block.
  • Unlike with most mounts, it can be used with hooks, wings, and a dash.
  • Unlike with most mounts, a player mounted with Roller Skates remains 3 tiles tall, allowing them to enter doors.
  • Cloud in a Bottle and its variants can be used with Roller Skates, but the Rocket Boots and variants will have no effect.

Tips

  • Roller Skates greatly increase mobility, accelerating much faster and having higher maximum speed than all boots, Magiluminescence, and several mounts. They also increase jump speed by 40%, which rivals the Frog Leg (32%) and Shiny Red Balloon (30%) without costing an accessory slot, and they will still improve movement while wings are equipped.
  • They can trivialize making a Wall of Flesh arena, as they can ride on Minecart Tracks.
  • While using Roller Skates, the player will maintain velocity without needing any directional input to be held to control. The lowest speed matches the player's building speed.
  • Despite not granting formal immunity, Roller Skates suppress the effects of slowing debuffs such as Chilled and Mighty Wind.[3] Verify
