Seashells
- Internal Item ID: 2625, 2626, 4071–4073 (Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Internal Tile ID: 324
Seashells are decorative items that can be found in the Ocean biomes. They can spawn on Sand Blocks within the biome, both on the beach and underwater. When placed, they can appear as one of three variants.
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Seashells can appear back on beaches and underwater, as long as no more than 3 Corals or Seashells are within an 8-tile range. Spawn rates scale with Rain, Wind, and empty space up to 14 tiles above the Sand Block. When a Seashell spawns, there is a 79.4% chance for either a regular Seashell or a Starfish, 9.8% chance for a Tulip Shell, 8.8% chance for a Lightning Whelk Shell, and 2% chance for a Junonia Shell.
(Old-gen console version) Seashells do not respawn and are limited to the number spawned during world generation, making them a non-renewable item.

Notes
- Although technically not a seashell, Starfish share the same function, spawn conditions, tile ID, and internal name as all Seashells. They are now collectively referred to in the code as Beach Piles.
- For the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version:
- When Seashells and Starfish spawn, they make an audible "thump" sound.Verify
- Spawn rates are increased during Rain and Wind weather, with a maximum bonus when both are at their strongest.
- Spawn rates are multiplied by the number of empty tiles above the Sand Block, up to 14 tiles. This means two vertical platforms of sand within 14 tiles would have the same spawn rate if not for the extra layer solid block needed under the sand. Empty tiles can include water, walls and inactive tiles.
- Spawn rates are decreased if 1 or more Seashells or Corals are within 11 tiles and can no longer spawn if more than 3 are within 8 tiles.
Tips
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) While they share spawns with the more common Seashells, Junonia Shells sell for considerably more and can be a good source of money early game.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) A simple Seashell farm can be built by placing Sand Blocks atop vertical platforms 14 tiles apart. Seashells will appear as long as above the surface in Ocean biomes, even in the Space layer. Walls will prevent Sea Oats from spawning without hindering Seashell spawns.
Trivia
- The Seashells, along with Corals, are the only decorative background objects whose inventory sprite does not match at least one of the placed variants.
- Until 1.3.5(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), items had an unused internal name. The Seashells' name was Beach Stuff.[1]
