Space
Space is the layer making up the top of the world, above the Surface. Gravity is decreased in Space, which means the player can jump higher and will fall slower, similar to the Featherfall effect. The sky is dark and stars are visible, even when the sun is still up. There are no naturally occurring blocks or objects in Space, although Floating Island or Living Tree parts may extend into it.
Despite being at such high altitudes, players that enter Space do not experience any consequences. They will neither incur the Suffocation debuff nor will the breath meter appear.
Fallen Stars spawn in Space and can appear inside structures made at high altitudes. Harpies and, in Hardmode, Wyverns and Arch Wyverns(Old-gen console and 3DS versions) spawn in Space. Additionally, Martian Probes(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are more likely to spawn in Space and common enemies such as slimes and Zombies can also appear in Space, given a viable area to spawn on.
The Forest Pylon(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can be used in Space.

Notes
- A pure Space biome is required for fishing in Space, otherwise no Space-exclusive fishing catches can be obtained.
- During pre-Hardmode, Space enemies cannot spawn in the central 10% of the world (horizontally).[1]
- For example, in a small world (which is 4200 tiles wide), Space enemies in pre-Hardmode can only spawn more than 210 tiles (5%) laterally away from the world's center. They cannot spawn within those central 420 tiles.
- There is no definite border between the Surface and Space. The transition is smooth; there are different altitude thresholds for the biome's features listed in the table below. These thresholds are based on the area between the surface line and the top of the world. Since the distance between the two differs from world to world due to the randomized world generation, the thresholds can be expressed more accurately in percentages of said area.

- Concrete, absolute altitudes for a given world can be displayed in the table above by moving a character to the very top of said world (the head must touch the visible world border) and entering the readout of the Depth Meter (or upgrades) here:

- On the Old-gen console version and Nintendo version, the Space Day music track will always play, regardless of the time.
Achievements
Tips
- There are numerous ways to reach Space:
- Build a pillar of blocks or any type of Rope.
- Consume a Gravitation Potion or use a Gravity Globe(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
- Equip wings, Rocket Boots or their upgrades, or other jump-boosting accessories to reach higher altitudes, especially when used from a Floating Island or other tall structures.
- Use an Ice Rod as a mode of ascension, or to use as a way to reset wings' flight time midair.
- Fly up while being a ghost from a deceased Hardcore character.
- Note that this does not grant the Into Orbit achievement.
- Construct a railroad that ascends upwards.
- Use a mount that flies, like the Bee or UFO Mount.
Trivia
- The Space music of the Old-gen console version and Nintendo version used to be exclusive to only those versions, but has since been implemented into the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version as the Space Day theme.
