The Spelunker Potion is a buff potion which grants the Spelunker buff when consumed. The buff illuminates valuable nearby objects, and the highlight color varies between versions. This lasts for 5 minutes, but can be canceled at any time by right-clicking the icon (Desktop version), by selecting the icon using Cycle Next/Previous Buff and then pressing Remove Buff (Console version), by selecting the icon and canceling it in the equipment menu (Old-gen console version), by double-tapping the buff icon (Mobile version), or by canceling the buff from the buffs screen (Nintendo 3DS version).

In addition to being crafted, Spelunker Potions can be found in pots, chests, and crates, (Desktop, Console, Mobile and 3DS versions) and have a small chance to appear as a bonus drop from slimes.

The Spelunker buff illuminates the following:

Treasure colors

On all versions but the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, ore and other treasures will be displayed with a yellow tint. This will somewhat alter the natural color of the highlighted treasure, such as making Cobalt turquoise and Orichalcum red. Some ores are not affected, these being Crimtane (unlike its counterpart Demonite), Meteorite, Obsidian, and Hellstone. Meteorite and Crimtane, however, do provide their own light.

Old-gen console version Old-gen console version

In the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, every type of ore will be displayed in a specific color and will glow and flash:

  • Copper OreCopper Ore has a reddish tone.
  • Iron OreIron Ore is red and blue, flashing.
  • Silver OreSilver Ore has a blue shade.
  • Gold OreGold Ore looks like copper, but with a slight yellow tint.
  • Demonite OreDemonite Ore is hard to distinguish from silver. Since it always gives off a glow, Spelunker is not needed to search for it.
  • Cobalt OreCobalt Ore is an intense blue, making it very distinct.
  • Mythril OreMythril Ore looks like silver, only the texture is slightly different and has a hint of green.
  • Adamantite OreAdamantite Ore is like copper but darker and more red and has less detail.

Notes

  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The sparkling effect seems to be greatest with the "Retro" lighting setting.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The map displays ores very distinctly, making Spelunker Potions almost obsolete.
  • Ruby can often be mistaken for Amethyst while using a spelunker potion.

Tips

  • The Metal Detector(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) informs the player of the most valuable treasure if there is any nearby, which can help determine whether it is worth finding and spending a Spelunker Potion.
  • The effect of the Spelunker Glowstick(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is similar to that of a Spelunker Potion, but the potion has the advantage of pinpointing the exact location of treasures within the player's screen, unlike the Spelunker Glowstick, which places sparkles over a treasure's general location and requires that it be held or thrown for the effect to activate.
  • Spelunker Potions are best used while playing in high-resolution displays.
  • Spelunker Potions are generally useful throughout the game's progression due to their ability to locate any valuable object regardless of visibility.

History

  • Desktop 1.2.3:
    • Spelunker no longer gives off light. This prevents ore from showing up on the map.
    • Spelunker now causes ore to be gold colored on the screen.
  • Desktop 1.2: Displays new treasure and has a Platinum Ore version of the recipe.
  • Console 1.0.750.0: (PlayStation 4)
    • Sprite updated.
    • All Ores now glow like they do in Desktop 1.3.0.1.
  • Console 1.06: Now has mechanics of Desktop 1.2.3, except all Ores have a unique glow.
  • Console 1.02: Displays new treasure and has a Platinum Ore version of the recipe.
  • Mobile 1.2.6508: Displays new treasure and has a Platinum Ore version of the recipe.
  • 3DS-Release: Introduced with mechanics and sprites of Desktop 1.2.3.
