Buff potions

Why does this page not list any of the buff potions in its recipes section? --66.92.49.239 16:43, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Graphical Update

The Table and Work Bench each have new graphics; therefore, the alchemy station needs an update as well. -- TechpriestMagos 01:20, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Another thought: The Wooden Table and Work Bench are largely unimportant as far as crafting is concerned. In fact, it would be as true to say a Work Bench crafting station requires solid blocks or Wooden Platforms to place it on. The important parts are the Bottle, Mug, or Pink Vase. As such, I suggest they be used for the image, each set on a Wooden Platform, for simplicity's sake, as this would be more relevant. -- TechpriestMagos 23:02, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Merge Alchemy Station with Bottle

This is the old portion of the discussion. See Return of the Rename (below) for the current discussion.

Now that the guide tells you what you need to craft things, I noticed that he refers to the Alchemy Station as "Bottle". This conflicts with the page which seems to imply that it's not the bottle but the combination of bottle and workbench/table/platform that constitutes a new piece of furniture called an Alchemy Station. Moving the content here to Bottle under a section called Alchemy Station/Crafting Potions/As Furniture would make more sense given the info the guide gives in-game. -- RestfulMonad 00:12, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Why in the world would we want to do that? A bottle is an item that is used for many different purposes, and the Alchemy Station is a crafting station. No. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 02:48, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Because according to the game there's no such thing as an "Alchemy Station". There's just a bottle. -- RestfulMonad 03:06, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
However, it requires the bottle to be placed on a table or workbench for it to be a crafting station. That information is reflected in this article. Also, the Alchemy Station is an already established term, and it is linked on a fairly large number of pages. I don't believe the merge to Bottle is appropriate at all. -- Wynthyst File:Curseicon.png talk 03:39, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
The bottle is simply required to be placed, and doesn't actually become one unit with a table or workbench it's placed on. This can be seen in your list of craftable recipes, as you must be within 4 blocks range of the bottle, not the table/bench it's on, to get access to alchemy recipes. Were an "alchemy station" actually a thing, then you would only need to be within 4 blocks range of the table/bench. So, in its purest state, for alchemy crafting, a bottle would be on a 1 block wide wooden platform. Were a bottle placeable on the ground, it would still function for alchemy crafting. Ultimately, the concept of an "alchemy station" (especially the image) is misleading people into thinking the table/bench is required, even though they each have other crafting purposes, and only a wooden ledge is necessary. 173.55.65.29 17:19, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Well it seems that whole problem is sorted out, now that a Pink Vase or Mug will also work as an Alchemy Station, it seems it'll have to stay the way it is.--TheFinalBiscuit 18:18, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Return of the Rename

Given the planned addition of the Alchemy Table, and considering that the name Alchemy Station isn't anywhere in the game code and doesn't appear to be widely used on the forums as a term for table+cup, is it worth considering renaming this page? Maybe something like Mixing Station would be more appropriate. Gearzein (talk) 08:45, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Had I been paying attention at the time, I would've been on the "bottle" side of the old discussion above. "Alchemy Station" seems to have been a fan-chosen name. While we are sometimes left to determine names ourselves for pages here when no definitive name is made evident by the game, the original author here may have overstepped.
  • The Guide just says a "Bottle" is required for crafting potions.
  • The recipes in the game code only specify that a bottle tile be nearby (a Tile ID of 13, which means a Bottle, Vase, Mug, or any Cup variant).
The only problem is that "Alchemy Station" is a long-established term. The old TerrariaOnline forum returns a lot of results for it and it's used in many YouTube videos.
Nevertheless, it might still be a good idea to finally correct this, especially since, as you point out, the Alchemy Table coming in 1.3 leaves our current term for this sounding more inaccurate. The Alchemy Table is intended to be an upgraded potion station, whereas right now it might sound like the opposite, or at least confusingly on-par. A possible fix might be to rename "Alchemy Station" to "Placed Bottle" or similar.
Since this term has been around for so long (several years, practically since the game's first release), let's leave the discussion open and see if anyone has any insights for a little while. I'll post a site notice requesting comments. Equazcion (talk) 11:56, 18 Apr 2015 (UTC)
I think the page should be named "Bottle (crafting station)", primarily for the sake of accuracy. Seems like "Alchemy Station" should a disambiguation at this point. As Equazcion points out, "Bottle" is the in-game name, and according to the code, it is a fairly accurate name. There is no "Alchemy Station" in-game. It is just a placed bottle. Just as there are many work benches, there are many "bottles" which function identically. I agree that the name "bottle" is a bit unfortunate since a pink vase is now a type of bottle, but that is just how the game is at the moment.
We can add in the intro of the page that a placed bottle (or equivalent) used for crafting potions is often referred to as an alchemy station. Bded343 (talk) 23:38, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
"Bottle (crafting station)" sounds fine to me. It also makes a lot more sense, as me being an unfortunate soul who only got Terraria a year ago or so, without looking at the actual page and seeing "Alchemy Station" as the name got me rather confused: was it something made at the Sawmill? 122.62.170.223 08:26, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
I'm in favor of calling it a bottle crafting station. Frankward (talk)
Another "vote" for Bottle (crafting station) here. I think it's good to use in-game terms as much as possible. Obviously it requires a brief explanation that a few other things besides bottles work, but that's no big deal. In fact I think referring to an "alchemy station" as previously used is kind of misleading. You don't even need a table, a bottle on a platform works too. BlueMana (talk) 19:52, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I think it should just be called the fill up station, brewing station or brewing stand like in minecraft. (Wdon17) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wdon17 (talk • contribs) at 09:47, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
{TrueKomondor} I think "Alchemy Stand" would be a good name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrueKomondor (talk • contribs) at 22:50, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
I think it should be merged with the Bottle page itself. It might get a bit complicated, since the bottle is used in multiple recipes of its own, but the same has happened before, like the Hellforge. And then, that misleading "Alchemy Station" picture could be changed to something to show what the "bottle" encompasses, like a placed Bottle, Pink Vase, etc
Also, to relate to the Lihzahrd / Jungle Temple discussion, I feel a lot of the newcomers who use the term "Alchemy Station" are only doing so because that's what it's listed as on the wiki. And, just because the wiki lists it as something else doesn't mean everyone will have to change what they call it. I could say "alchemy station", "bottle", or even "cup thing on a platform" and it would still be easy to know what I mean. --KM100 (talk) 00:12, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I think a suitable name would be chemistry station — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skybreaker8769 (talkcontribs)
There are several items that can serve as potion stations aside from the actual Bottle, and currently they're on a bunch of separate pages. If we did a merge, we would need to merge to all the possible variants (Vase, Mug, etc) via a template. That could be confusing, especially to newbies. It might make sense to keep the potion station page separate, via something like Bottle (crafting station) as was suggested above.
In response to Wdon and TrueKomondor, I don't like the idea too much of replacing the current fan-created name with a new fan-created name, since that could conceivably lead to the same problem down the line. If it's to remain its own separate page, we'll need to differentiate it (Placed Bottle, Bottle (crafting station), etc); but we do essentially know that the intended name was "Bottle", even though that might not be the sexiest name imaginable. Equazcion (talk) 03:50, 21 Apr 2015 (UTC)
I agree that the page should be named Bottle (crafting station), and I also agree that we will need to differentiate the two bottle pages. The existing page should be renamed Bottle (crafting material), as that is the only use for it other than placing it to use as the crafting station. Chrisf1020 (talk) 04:15, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, keep the station on it's own page, as like it was said above, there are multiple items that can be used for the station's purpose, which would just get confusing if it were placed on the page of the item(s). Then once 1.3 is out, "Alchemy Station" should be either a disambiguation between this and the new item, or a redirect to one of them with a note at the top of that page linking to the other item's page, depending on the new item's function (if it can do everything the bottle can, but with more redirect to that). If this change is to be made before 1.3 is released though, "Alchemy Station" should probably just redirect to the bottle station until the update launches. AdmiralTails (talk) 16:43, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Conclusion

It seems the consensus is to move Alchemy Station to Bottle (crafting station). I'm going to do this move, however since that'll be a cumbersome term for use within article text, I'm also going to create a redirect called Placed Bottle (as opposed to having Bottle (crafting station) show up in paragraphs, or having to use extra code to hide the "(crafting station)" bit). I'm going to use a bot to replace all the current links to Alchemy Station with Placed Bottle. I'll wait a bit in case there are any objections to that plan. Thanks to everyone who posted comments above :) Equazcion (talk) 20:26, 21 Apr 2015 (UTC)

PS. If anyone has a better idea for the "simple redirect" I'm planning to use as the replacement within articles, feel free to suggest. As has been mentioned, in-game terms are preferable, so "Placed Bottle" seems like the best balance to me (in-game accuracy vs simplicity -- it's a Bottle in placed form). Equazcion (talk) 20:41, 21 Apr 2015 (UTC)
Placed Bottle seemed fine initially, but after seeing it on a few pages, I'm not sure it works, at least not as a simple replacement for "alchemy station". Take this for example: "A Platform with a Bottle (or similar) placed on it will also function as a Placed Bottle." Ignoring the fact that a the last words are a link, it's a tautology and provides no information... or come to think of it, read literally, it says the platform turns into a bottle, which is just plain wrong. BlueMana (talk) 03:03, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
It is unfortunate that this discussion has reached a conclusion already. The term "Alchemy Station" is used in the mobile version of Terraria (possibly in the console as well). When viewing a recipe it's possible to click on the different icons involved for further info, and when clicking on the crafting station icon for potions (which displays a Bottle), the name "Alchemy Station" pops up (image). Furthermore, though perhaps not as important, this seemingly unused sprite, with this filename, exists within the game files:

It is possible that the name was indeed fan-created and adopted by the staff at 505Games or Codeglue in which it wouldn't be very "canon" after all, though this is impossible to say. As the PC version is the most prevalent then I suppose "Bottle" should remain and the article simply elaborated with "also known as Alchemy Station in the mobile version Mobile version".
