What is an "underground water area"? Does it just mean it requires the underground layer and a water tile, in addition to a suitable surface on which to spawn?

Spawning mechanic

"Crawdads are unique in that their ability to spawn is connected to two other enemies: the Salamander and the Giant Shelly. Of these three enemies, a world will choose two types that it can spawn, leaving the third inaccessible. Crawdads will never spawn in a world that features both Salamanders and Giant Shellies together."
Just noticed this neat mechanic and looked at the code, it seems that two monster types and the color variant is decided on each world load, so you can still get the 3rd monster type in the same world by reloading. Might be worth noting if someone can verify this. 86.115.19.146 08:34, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

damage bug/correction

I was just playing an expert world in prehardmode when a crawdad did 113 damage. I'm certain this is the right value, as it killed me instantly from full health. As far as I know, Terraria randomizes damage by only 15% in either direction, so a value of 113 is unexpected considering the wiki's prehardmode damage value of 56. I suspect this is a bug, but would like to request further investigation.

I'm finding this to be impossible if you're in pre-hardmode. Are you sure that you were hit by a crawdad and not by a bone? That value would've made sense if it were a projectile 'cause they make no sense, but i'll ask around. -- Murrayzero (talk) 08:18, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
This happened to me too. A crawdad snuck up on me pre-hardmode, me with 25 defense and 400 HP, and I'm down under 200 HP after just two hits. I've noticed that sometimes crawdads will reach out with their claw. As best I can tell, that claw attack does significantly more damage than simple contact, maybe even twice as much! Test it - just let a crawdad walk up to you and reach out with that claw, you'll feel it! --69.246.127.88 15:19, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
