Why are we so convinced that gastropods are slimes? Is it from official word, or speculation based on the fact that they drop gel drops? The way I see it, they look nothing like slimes, they behave nothing like slimes, their name doesn't mean slime, so there's really little reason to suspect they have any relation to slimes. It's true that slimes are the only other monsters to drop gel drops, but featureless little blobs of goo hardly seem like the most exclusive thing, and let's not forget that other monsters share drops in common -- skeletons and piranha for instance -- without any apparent relation. 72.74.172.225 22:59, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Not only drops, but also resistances against debuffs. But indeed there is no official word saying that they are slimes, so it is partially because of the gel drops too. --Icke 07:32, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

You mean immunity to poison? (according to the Poison article, in which I assume gastropods are meant to fall under slimes) Again, hardly the most exclusive thing, especially considering the myriad of other enemies which also share that immunity (including basically everything else in the Hallow). 72.74.172.225 00:36, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I don't think gastropods were meant to be slimes; but I can see how others imagine them as flying, armored slimes. I found this discussion; and if it's important to you, you could try asking Redigit for his official word. My 2 CC. --Sinister Stairs 14:54, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Interesting, I did not know we had a forum. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like the discussion there was ever really resolved; it was sort of dropped with "they drop gel" still on the table despite having every argument I could think of stacked against it. I'd personally say the slimers lost that one, and nobody here is really jumping up in defense of the slime idea, but the change to the information on the wiki would affect multiple pages here and upset what seems to be a pretty deeply rooted idea, so I don't feel like I can actually proceed without some actual approval.

Asking the source himself is an option, but I'm not sure I feel entirely comfortable doing that myself, especially considering I don't even have an account at the moment. I'm also worried I'll get some cryptic or totally inconclusive answer, like "Well, what do you think they are?" But I can try that if no discussion really develops here.

Coincidentally, last night I noticed the Terraria load screen that clearly depicts the gastropod as a snail. That graphic makes me think Red knew what real gastropods are; i.e. not slimes. I'd be in favor of removing the slime references (or move them to a Trivia section saying "Some players believe..."); but I can't speak for the community as a whole. --Sinister Stairs 14:56, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

That was my thinking when I rewrote the article (though I just realized I neglected to add a link. Derp). Mentioning a possible connection to slimes in the trivia sounds good, especially since it's apparently a popular opinion, so people will likely be looking for a mention. It's heavily suggested that Gastropods are slimes, simply by the games logic. They, like any slime, become completely passive when you equip the Royal Gel. Not only that, but I'm pretty sure that you need to kill one for the "Gelatin World Tour" achievement. Sigiliph (talk) 20:07, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

I am pretty sure they are considered slimes because you need to kill a gastropod for the Gelatin World Tour achievement which requires you to kill one of every slime, therefore considering gastropods as slimes. 88.230.187.225 18:43, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

As for the trivia part of the article, it should be noted that slugs and snails are reportedly "slimy". if this does not prove gastropods are slime, then I don't know what does. 24.171.2.103 15:13, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Ranged Damage error?

Similar to the Skeleton Archers, it seems Gastropods do way more damage than what is listed here (25 base ranged damage, assuming the player has zero defense). Are their projectiles (also) affected by the "double damage to players" effect that PvP attacks have, or is there an error in the wiki?

Gel drops for Spectral Gastropod

I've seen the Spectral Gastropod drop gel on mobile version(ios). It really drops a lot of it, I once got 25 gel from a single Spectral Gastropod. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.114.3.56 at 12:47, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

I wouldn't doubt that it does, since the original does as well. Since we don't have access to the mobile source code we'll have to refine the value over time, but for now 10-25 is reasonable. Gearzein (talk) 18:17, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Spectral Gastropods shooting 'slow moving orbs'

This wiki page says that Spectral Gastropods fire slow moving orbs at the player, as opposed to the regular lasers. I just loaded it up on my 3DS and it fired a regular laser at me. Is this an old-gen console exclusive feature or is it false? InspectrE (talk) 16:52, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
