The Wooden Hammer needs to be added to this list. Does anyone know how many hits it takes to remove spikes? I can test walls myself easily enough, when I get the chance. -- TechpriestMagos 23:02, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

1.0.6

swing speed is now completely separate from working speed. and by completely, i mean i hope it is a bug because a wooden hammer happened take out a dirt wall in about 5 hits but only 1 second-ish. 166.164.112.169 08:19, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

correction and to more accurate, 3 hits within a second to break a dirt wall for one and half swings. 166.164.112.169 08:30, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
That's a good point. Perhaps we should add use speed and the related "time to break/mine" (use time*hits needed) or breaks/second (1/(use time*hits needed)) to this and the pickaxe page.futRtrubL 08:49, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
the point was how oddly fast the weakest hammer broke a dirt wall... it before used to take about 4 hits using non edited weapon speed, and ignoring weapon speed boosts. now it is insanely fast and number of hits can be ignored. btw molten hammax mined dirt wall out with one hit. 166.164.107.88 04:10, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Yup, that's one of the documented changes for 1.06. Easier wall placement and removal.futRtrubL 05:45, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
well how do we document the new change for the page that is now partially outdated? pretty much every hammer breaks something under a second an half with the highest breaking walls instantly (no joke just gather a bunch of background and move a held click around and get spammed with breaking sounds). 96.15.156.137 20:07, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
I believe it's only the walls that come down easier. Other placed items like furniture still take just as long. If there has been a change across the board for all hammer speeds on all items then that should be changed here, but if it's just walls then a note can be made that they all have the same speed for dismantling walls (if that's the case). I would have to do some testing before I changed the page myself, which I can't do right now, but if anyone can then feel free. Equazcion (talk) 20:50, 18 Aug 2011 (UTC)

Hammer sometimes don't work

Pretty often, when i attempt to destroy background, the hammer don't destroy it (it swings, but it don't hit the background), and then after aiming around it suddenly works, are there any idea what is going on? Breaking things like demon altar, shadow orb, demon heart always works though. -- FunAlways (talk) 01:47, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

I think that some natural walls (which do not count as "Walls" for the purposes of housing(maybe?)) cannot be punched out starting from the middle, only from the edges. For near-surface spelunking, if you are above the layer where the background sets in (cavern?) then punching a hole into the wall would let daylight in. This would be a cheap alternative to torches for early in the game, which may be why it occurs (if it's not a bug). If you cannot use a hammer to remove a certain tile of wall, try finding the edge of where the wall occurs and start there and knock out a line of wall leading to where you wish to begin work. If you were aiming around, you may have hit a tile of background close enough to the edge of walls to be knocked out, which then made the background you were aiming at also be valid targets for the hammer to remove.

That makes sense (and works)! Thanks! Tested a bit today, to be removable, the wall must be either:
* A wall valid for housing (i.e player placed, living tree wall, cabin wall, etc)
* Is adjacent to any wall-less block or wall valid for housing (diagonally works)

Wall time - Jackhammer and Spectre

What's going on with this "wall time"? Is it time that you need to break 1 wall? So it says that a Chlorophyte Jackhammer have "wall_time"=0.23s and a Spectre Hamaxe "wall_time"=0.26s, but the Spectre Hamaxe is MUCH faster than the Chlorophyte Jackhammer. And I think the Chlorophyte Jackhammer have the same wall digging speed as a Chlorophyte Warhammer. Krzysk1 (talk) 19:29, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Honestly, I have no idea what those numbers are referring to. Nearly two seconds for a single wall with a Wooden Hammer sounded like nonsense. Just doing a quick test with the hammer I had on me- a Flesh Grinder with a bad modifier (annoying)- I was able to break around four walls in one second, which makes the claim of .63sec for one ridiculous. I think these might be based on swing times or old numbers or something like that, which would be a little closer to making sense.
Sadly, a lot of information here is kind of outdated, so until I can take a look at the source and get all this worked out, it'll likely just be removed. --Gearzein (talk) 19:50, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Mining Speed/Tool Speed Updates

The "Mining Speed" values are all way out of wack. I first noticed this when I made a chlorophyte jackhammer and immediately realized that it was slower than my pwnhammer, despite this wiki claiming that it should've been twice as fast. Then I did some controlled tests (Terraria version 1.3.0.8, PC) to experimentally determine the exact mining speed of all these hammers. The long and short of it is that, if that stat does indeed refer to the number of frames (at 60fps) it takes for one hit (as the Mining Speed page clearly states), then the numbers on this wiki are all around double what they should be, except the jackhammer, which is only one off. I'm guessing these numbers are all old or something, so I'm putting in mine. Adamantium9001 (talk) 21:49, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

*sigh*, never mind; I just now realized that tools work twice as fast on walls (i.e. in "hammer mode") than on trees ("axe mode") or normal blocks ("pickaxe mode"). I'll double all my numbers now. Adamantium9001 (talk) 22:12, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Specifically, I'm going to fix the chlorophyte jackhammer's reported speed to be double (er...double the number, halve the speed) what I measured in-game but revert all the others if the wiki's previous claim was either double what I measured or double plus 1 (my theory being that tool "speed" (i.e. frames per hit) for walls is half of the regular tool speed, rounded down). Adamantium9001 (talk) 22:28, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Final report: the net effect of all this is that the jackhammer was the only one I changed. All the others were fine, except the luminite ones, which didn't have a number at all. On that note, there is a chance that my numbers for them and the jackhammer are one too small, but that's still much better than what was there before. Did you make sure you were using the items with no modifiers including armor and accessories? 76.125.252.80 22:56, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Unobtainable hammers should be removed from list

I get having pages for unobtainable items, but they shouldn't be listed on pages that list all items of a given type that are obtainable. I was trying to create a hammer build and found this page looking for highest damage output, and found the four celestial fragments hammers and had wondered why I haven't seen them before. It was only after clicking on the link to find the method of obtaining did I learn that they were unobtainable. 216.48.140.206 14:41, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, i've reported this to the more specialized editors so that they can remove it. Thank you for noticing this. -- Murrayzero (talk) 16:19, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Gold Hammer

This page seems to be missing the Gold Hammer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.173.91.129 at 18:47, 26 July 2020

A purge fixed it. — Philo04 18:51, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

How hammering works

It would be really cool if the page could add a section explaining how hammering work like, how many times you have to hit a block to make it a slope pointing to the upper right? And it also depends on where the block is placed, like if the block have 1 block down and 1 block to the right, you'll need to hit only 2 times to make it pointing to the upper right, but if the block have 1 block over it, it won't. I wanted to know how the mechanic of the hammering works, so i'd like to in this page have a section explaining that. Lorcout (talk) 01:39, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
