How does the map update?

Does the minimap update for events that aren't seen, like a meteorite falling or entering hardmode? I know the NPCs movement is tracked, so I'm really curious if other things update too. (Ex. A meteorite falls- I've seen the area it's fallen on before. Can I see the actual meteorite on the map before I discover it by actually finding it on screen?)

I want to know if it's worth the trouble of going through the whole map surface THEN trying to get a meteorite. But it would also be nice to know if it updates when hardmode is activated too. I guess this would include multiplayer, are changes by other players updated? --71.191.38.158 03:34, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I know from experience that it will update when hardmode activates as well as when hardmode ores spawn even if you aren't there. I can't confirm anything else, but I know that much. --72.83.33.87 03:41, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
No. It will not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.83.184.109 at 22:43, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
most of the time you yourself have to find something for the map to change. (Ex:if water is falling and your don't see it all your map will show water falling and then stoping in mid air. not unlit you go and see it does the water show how it is on the map. Odd pictures when zooming out

For example, this is what I got when I went into a snow biome.

Can we have a section regaurding the odd pictures shown whenever you zoom all the way out of full-screen mode? Like this. They appear to be different every time you go into a new biome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.83.184.109 at 22:43, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

This needs to be updated with mobile content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.183.88.229 at 02:29, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

PS3 Minimap

Perhaps it's the same for Xbox as well, but I don't know so I'm playing it safe.

You can dig a hellshaft every 30 meters to reveal the entire map. The minimap will update remotely if something changes, so you can actively monitor the spread of Corruption/Crimson and Hallow, as well as see where new meteorites have landed. These regularly-spaced shafts have the added benefit of being usable for the Clentaminator.

I just felt that some of this could be mentioned in the article. 68.0.125.61 11:00, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Edit: All blocks the screen passes over, whether lit or not, will appear fully-lit on the minimap. This might be added as well, for reference. 68.0.125.61 11:15, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Console Minimap Key/Legend

I was wondering if there was any key or legend for the minimaps for the console versions since you can't hover over items with a cursor to find out what they are on the consoles. They should have included a cursor function for the minimap... I'm constantly having to scratch my head and try to remember what was where.DoriSai (talk) 10:27, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Why i can't turn my minimap on?

I can't turn it on,even on setting screen,is this happening due to my PC?Jonhof04 (talk) 23:02, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

When you press the escape key, you should see 4 map options at the upper right of the screen. From left to right: Full-Screen, Hidden, Portrait, and Overlay. It should look like this:

Is this what you see? --Ferretwings (talk) 02:18, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Weird Mini map effect

When exploring my world, I came across a weird effect on the minimap. The effect was a blue circle that kept growing and shrinking and was about 3x3 or 5x5 in tiles. Does anyone know what this was? I immediately checked the wiki and found nothing. 71.219.208.76 04:29, 16 July 2020 (UTC)LDragonO

Right off the bat I've no suggestions to what this might've been, but if you stumble across it in the future I would recommend to screenshot it for reference :-) NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 00:42, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
Map Ping in game.
I think you probably encountered this: Map Ping.gif. This is a map ping used to signal where other players should go in multiplayer. It's purely visual, and useless if you are in singleplayer.BadPiggy1024 (talk) 15:07, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

.map file editing

Say I want to edit a .map file so as to reveal the entire minimap of a world. How would one do that? SniperOnSunday (talk) 19:02, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
