Question, does the effect stack if you have more of them. And does the effect stack if multiple players are carrying one? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.169.225.6 (talk • contribs) at 19:15, May 25, 2011 (UTC).

The effect doesn't stack if you have multiple ones, but it DOES stack if multiple players have them. --GauHelldragon 19:39, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

You have to quantify the effect first, that said, I plowed through a dungeon picking up every one of these things I could see along the way and there was seemed to be no difference in enemy quantities from the moment I entered to when I left. So, no, I don't believe it "stacks".

  • Does this really increase encounter rate while it is in your inventory, or do you need to be "holding" it (i.e. with it in your hand)? 78.105.8.153 12:44, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't matter if it is in your inventory or if you're "holding" it

Does placing them in the world also provide the effect for the nearby area?--DoubleFloat 19:01, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Stacking with Blood Moon

Do the water candles still stack with the blood moon? I was doing some testing with a meteorite. A blood moon night started, and I was able to get 14 meteorite heads on screen at once before they stopped spawning. I then placed one water candle and held another, and no additional meteorites spawned.

In the day with no candles, I could get 9 heads. With one placed candle, I got 11 heads. With one placed and one held candle, I got 14 heads. I checked several times, and there were no water mobs spawning in nearby water during any of the tests. I did not test with a battle potion. This testing was done in 1.2.0.3.

Spawn Rate

So exactly how much does the spawn rate of monsters increase when you have this item? It doesn't seem to increase by that much for me. My guess is around 20% increase.

And does this effect work when the item is in the world? Jrob 18:21, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

I tested with these for several hours last night while I farmed up my Sunfury, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's currently bugged not to have any effect at all. Its effects are very subtle, assuming they do exist. A 20% increase sounds reasonable. There's no good way to test whether it needs to be held or just in your inventory. Also, it's possible that it only works in certain environments (ie. it only affects Zombie, Skeleton, and Angry Bones spawn rates or something) --Theothersteve7 18:25, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Replying to my old post - Hey, what do you know, I was right. It's been fixed since.

Code check

Could somebody decompile the code (if its legal to do so) and check exactly how the water candle works? i.e. do you have to be holding it for it to work, on what mobs does it work, how much does it affect these mobs. --Miauw62 09:33, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

We have done so already. That's why the article has concrete percentages, and the fact that you have to be holding it in your hand. --Lunboks 11:35, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

water candle 99 stack

will a 99 stack drastically increase the spawn rate of enemies? it seems when i had 1 water candle spawns didnt seem to be changed for me when holding it, but at 55 things got a little intense. what will a stack of 99 water candles bring? and what if you were to combine water candles + battle potion + BLOOD MOON (event) while partially in the corruption and partially in a normal biome of forest *seperated by a tower aka your base* AND while using the max spawn mob mod? just asking for expirments sake. --Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.20.242.10 (talkcontribs)

Simple answer, no. The effect of the Water Candle stacks with Blood Moons and the Battle buff, but there's an upper limit on spawn rate and max spawns. --Lunboks 20:12, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Underwater

I have a question: Technically, you don't hold the water candle when you have it selected underwater since your character puts it away. Does the spawn rate increasing effect still work when you have it selected, but when you're not holding it? Nixitur 16:33, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

If you want to get technical, the Water Candle affects the spawn rate if it's the currently active item. Underwater, its animation is (erroneously) hidden, like with Torches and normal Candles, but it's still the active item. --Lunboks 16:36, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Ah, that's what I thought. Thanks for confirming that! Nixitur 18:24, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
I can also confirm this. Camped out underwater for a long time with it in my inventory, but NOT selected, accumulated 10 enemies each time. Selected it, got 12 every time.

100 percent sure? I'm pretty sure it stacks when not held in the hand ON MOBILE. As of 1.4 it definitely doesn't stack, I tested it. Also I'm having problems editting right now so can someone fox it for me? Colinzer (talk) 21:26, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Water Candle while on a rope or held with a cursor

Hi, considering the info that the Water Candle works when it's on the hotbar and currently active (even underwater, it seems), I understand that it should also work when the player is grabbing onto a rope, as long as the Water Candle is selected on the toolbar? Also, does the Water Candle work when it's picked up with the cursor when the inventory is open? The character holds it in their hand when it's picked up like that. HnZ88 (talk) 15:35, 20 June 2019 (UTC) Edit: I did just find out that the particle effect is unhinged from where the player is on a rope but rather appears at the point where the player grabbed onto the rope, regardless of whether you equip the Water Candle before or after grabbing the rope. Suspended in midair

Not sure which section to put in… On current Switch version, at least, (1.3.5? equivalent), water candles fail to deconstruct from destroying their support platform, so you can hang them in midair.71.15.200.122 11:17, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Area of effect

I just tested the area of the candle, and on version 1.4.3.6 on PC it's still 170*125 Tahnael (talk) 07:43, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Updated the version, thank you! (this edit) --Eraloiz (talk) 12:28, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
