No need for Floating Islands

Just something I've noticed -- Wyverns (and Harpies) simply spawn above a given height. There's no need for a Floating Island. Can someone else verify this? --125.253.99.68 00:17, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Not a Mini Boss

It's a tough enemy but has no boss characteristics http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/do-you-consider-the-wyvern-a-miniboss.67124/ Here's a thread were the vast majority are saying it's definitely not a mini boss. --Moxxy 19:04, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Decreasing Spawn Rate

I've killed a handful of these, and died fighting several more, and I didn't notice the spawn rate decreasing with successive appearances. I suggest removing the note as I find the suggestion unlikely. --Theothersteve7 18:56, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Additional Tactic

I've had great luck using a Star Cannon. The most stars I used was 31; the least was 8. (Lucky shots I guess) Mileron 22:25, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

The wyvern's attack pattern is fairly basic. Although it takes longer, before you have the clockwork rifle, the sunfury can be effective. Running one direction, attacking the head and along the body with the sunfury, then jumping over it using the spectre boots (even easier when combined with cloud in a balloon) to hover means that you can essentially take no damage with one repeated maneuver. This can be done with one short platform, only 150 or so blocks long, although a longer one gives more room for error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.37.195.110 at 15:13, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Like a Boss

I personally think that the wyverns should drop eggs occasionally but only during blood moons. The eggs could hatch them if you cook them in a furnace and then you could ride them around the world and they should shoot meteor head fireballs if you hold an adamantite bar! — Preceding unsigned comment added by BertieChap8490 (talk • contribs) at 00:26, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

I personally think you don't understand how wiki talk pages work --Moxxy 02:19, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Hey, it's just an idea, you git! — Preceding unsigned comment added by BertieChap8490 (talk • contribs) at 05:19, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Other References

It's odd, when I first saw the picture it reminded me of the Flying Dog/Wyrm from The Neverending Story.--24.131.174.8 13:04, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

More Bugs

I have no idea, if this has happened to others, but I killed the Wyvyrn, but it didn't drop anything, except coins. No Souls of Flight. So yeah. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.152.86.253 at 17:24, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Spawn Near Residence?

Can anyone speak to whether the wyvern will spawn near a home that is built in the sky? Do NPCs affect the spawn? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.188.108.183 at 04:23, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Wyverns shouldn't spawn near a town with several NPCs, even in the sky. Wyverns don't pose any particular exception to the spawning rules near NPCs, as far as I'm aware. Equazcion (talk) 09:11, 28 Oct 2014 (UTC)
I added important informations about Wyvern spawning. A home built in the sky can be perfectly safe as long as you stay behind player-placed walls. You don't even need to enclose yourself with tiles, just stay in front of the walls, and no wyvern will ever spawn. Having three or more NPCs on the screen will also completely prevent them from spawning. And I'm not talking about the usual spawn rate reduction caused by Town NPCs, yhis is a different flag that completely block them. 78.230.250.215 21:22, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
That sounds far too much like the normal mob spawning rules to believe that it's anything more than speculation, as I don't think Re-Logic would code in an "exclusion" that acts identically to the normal rules. If you could point me to where in the source you got this information I'd be glad to verify it, though. Gearzein (talk) 22:40, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
From the method Terraria.Main.NPC.SpawnNPC().
This is the line testing for the Wyvern spawn:
if (Main.hardMode && Main.rand.Next(10) == 0 && !NPC.AnyNPCs(87) && !flag3)
As you can see, the test fails if flag3 is set to True, which only happens if the player stands in front of a player-placed wall, or if there is one or more Town NPC near the player (After further analysing, I saw that this one is ignored during some events, or in some biomes).
It does not act identically to the normal rule. The normal rule manipulates NPC.maxSpawns and NPC.spawnRate, and doesn't prevent any NPC from spawning until the maxSpawns is reached. This is something else, that comes after the normal rule. This is also not about walls preventing mobs to spawn where the walls are, but about walls behind the player preventing mobs to spawn on a valid spawn point. Of course, the normal rule still apply to the Wyvern, but this comes after the calculations around the spawn rate, and after having found a valid spawn point. And it is actually used for every NPC that can fly through tiles (Devourer, Enchanted Sword, Floaty Gross, etc.).
Now, why would Re-Logic code an exclusion like this? Because you couldn't build a safe house in many biomes if every worm-like creature could just spawn and fly in. Solid tiles keep most mobs at bay, this rule takes care of the others.
I tested this before editing the article. I verified every point I saw in the code, and it truly works that way.
By the way, I made a mistake in my edit and was going to correct it when I saw your revert. The "three or more Town NPC" was wrong, it's "one or more",. But as mentioned above, the part around Town NPCs is actually tied to the absence of some events or biomes. If I can put my edit back on the article, I'll correct it. I think I'll keep that part out for now as it could lead to misconceptions. I'll add it when fully understood and heavily tested. The condition about walls behind the player, however, is true no matter what happens in the game.
Also note that a Harpy spawn every time the Wyvern fails to do so. Which means the line You will know if the conditions are right for Wyvern spawning if you see Harpies currently in the article is false. It's the other way around. You know if Harpies can spawn when you see a Wyvern, because Wyverns can't always spawn when Harpies can. Harpies don't care about the walls, nor about other Harpies. 78.230.250.215 02:41, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Good work. I've restored your edit, accounting for the new findings; I'll leave it to you to make any changes from here on out. If I've made any mistakes, feel free to correct them. Gearzein (talk) 03:07, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Nice! I'm quite busy today but I'll finish this on the weekend. I'll also try to come with a generalised rule regarding mobs that ignore tiles, as it seems, all of them use this flag3, but I need to verify it first. 78.230.250.215 14:24, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Arch Wyvern Sprite

The Arch Wyvern Sprite was indeed changed in 1.2, and the new sprite was never added to the wiki. Perhaps I'll ask MrRudi on the forums if he has it. Chrisf1020 (talk) 23:56, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

I just put it up :) Equazcion (talk) 00:27, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, that thing is scary looking. :P Chrisf1020 (talk) 00:28, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Yeah it looks pretty awesome. First time I've ever been jealous of the mobile version. Equazcion (talk) 00:34, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)
I believe the red one is actually the console sprite as well, as all of the console/mobile exclusive reskins were done for the Console 1.2 update. The green one is the original sprite that was introduced when the Console Version was released. It would make sense, because the banner they made for it actually looks like the red sprite. Chrisf1020 (talk) 00:39, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
That would make sense. Not sure though. I'm also not completely sure how the sprite looks -- I cut it together from the individual pieces. It's possible it actually shows as extended in the game, with two sets of legs like the old sprite did. I have no way of knowing without seeing it in-game. Might be a good idea to confirm these things in the forum after all. Equazcion (talk) 00:41, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)
I'm posting a forum thread now, will link to it here. Equazcion (talk) 00:51, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)
http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/arch-wyvern-screenshot.6734/ Equazcion (talk) 00:54, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)
I did find enough information here to determine that this is also the console sprite. I haven't been able to find the actual sprite anywhere yet though. And thanks, I'll watch the thread. Chrisf1020 (talk) 00:57, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
And apparently moving files to a name that already exists is a staff-only function. Chrisf1020 (talk) 01:28, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I just uploaded them again to the old filenames. You can upload new versions of old files without being an admin, FYI. I'll clear out the duplicates, though gonna keep the duplicate full-body shot for now only cause it's in use at the forum thread. Equazcion (talk) 01:34, 9 Dec 2014 (UTC)

Arch wyvern's head

It reminds me of the Monster Zero King Ghidorah or one of the Ghidorahs. Am I the only that sees this? Uygfjmhgvh (talk) 13:11, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Coin drops

Wyverns do not drop coins from each part of their bodies, for a total of 4 gold 20 silver. Why are they listed that way? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DickKickem (talk • contribs) at 04:14, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

The coin drops of the individual segments are defined like that in the source code, and since the {{npc infobox}} template pulls its information directly from there, they are displayed like that.
To reduce confusion, I will add the actual drop value to the main infobox, like it is done on the other worms' pages (no idea why it has not been like this here before).
Thank you for bringing this up! --Rye Greenwood (talk) 01:56, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Wyvern sprite not updated to 1.3.5 on this Wiki?

Even though its in-game sprite was updated in 1.3.5, the Wyvern image on the wiki doesn’t look different. Superwill771 (talk) 23:56, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

As 4e696e6a6f795844 has already said on the floating island talk page, the sprite has indeed been updated to its 1.3.5 version on the wiki, though the change is very minor. See Wyvern.png file history. --Eraloiz (talk) 03:21, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Terraria trading card description

The Steam Trading card for the Wyvern and all other Terraria trading cards include description text that can be used for quotations. The wyverns's trading card for example says "The reason your flying city is a ghost town."
