A player going in and out of the Vortex armor's stealth mode.
The Vortex armor's afterimage effect.
Vortex armor is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord armor set that provides ranged weapon boosts. It is the final ranged armor set available on the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version. Crafting the full set requires a total of 36 Luminite Bars (144 Luminite) and 45 Vortex Fragments.
The set consists of the Vortex Helmet, Vortex Breastplate, and Vortex Leggings.
A full set of Vortex armor provides the following bonuses:
Additionally, equipping a full set grants the player the ability to toggle stealth mode, which has the following effects:[1]
- Near-invisibility
- −1200 aggro
- +80% ranged damage
- +20% ranged critical strike chance
- +50% knockback
- −33% movement speed
Unlike Shroomite armor, standing still is not required to enter Vortex armor's stealth mode. Instead, it is toggled manually by double-tapping the ▼ Down key. Moving or grappling does not cancel the effect, and like Shroomite armor, its stealth bonuses are applied to all ranged weapon types. Dashing with items such as the Shield of Cthulhu or Tabi, or riding a mount will cancel stealth mode. Stealth mode cannot be activated while on a mount.

Notes
- The Settings allows switching the set bonus trigger key from ▼ Down to ▲ Up.
- While in stealth mode, the player's movement speed on ground will be greatly reduced. However, when flying, it will only decrease the acceleration, and the top flying speed is unchanged.
- Like all armors made from Luminite, equipping Vortex armor makes the player give off light, in this case teal. The light radius increases with the amount of pieces equipped, but none is emitted while stealth mode is activated.
- The player will be completely invisible in stealth mode when the Familiar set is equipped, or when using Shadow Dye.
- It takes 25 ticks[2] (0.42 seconds) to enter or exit stealth mode, and while in transition, the stat effects are scaled to the current level of stealth.[3] For example, the player's ranged damage will be increased by 40% after 0.21 seconds after starting the switch to stealth mode.
Tips
- When crafting Vortex armor after the first defeat of Moon Lord, it is wise to make the Vortex Leggings first. This is because the Vortex Helmet and Breastplate are somewhat inferior to their corresponding pieces in the Shroomite armor set when stealth is not considered. While the Vortex Helmet seems to provide a higher damage boost than the Shroomite headpieces, the Shroomite headpieces' damage boost stacks multiplicatively with other sources of damage boosts, so they have a higher damage potential when combined with other damage-increasing gears and buffs. The Shroomite Breastplate offers higher ranged damage and critical strike chance than the Vortex one, at the cost of lower ammo conservation. Also, the Red Riding Dress can be used as an efficient substitute for the Shroomite Breastplate.
- Stealth mode is not disabled through the use of wings; this includes the high-speed hovering ability of accessories such as the Hoverboard, Betsy's Wings(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster, and the Celestial Starboard(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). Equipping one of these can offer good mobility while in stealth mode.
- The Soaring Insignia(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) along with any pair of wings completely negates the negatives of the set bonus, as stealth mode only decreases ground mobility.
- If wearing Hermes Boots or a derivative, running takes significantly longer to start while in stealth mode.
- Taking damage while in stealth mode does not disable it, but the bonuses will be reset for a short time. This could mean that taking damage repeatedly over time can cause a drop in the total damage output. Since they lengthen the invincibility duration of the player, wearing a Cross Necklace or a Star Veil can negate this.
Trivia
- A full set of Vortex armor resembles the Storm Diver, an enemy from the Lunar Event summoned by the Vortex Pillar, which itself resembles a humanoid wearing a space suit.
- The current sprites of the Vortex armor has changed from an earlier design shown in spoilers:
- Out of the four armor sets made from Luminite, Vortex armor is the only one without an associated buff.
