The Water Bolt Mimic is a rare pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns in front of placed Books in the Dungeon. It disguises itself as a placed Water Bolt until it takes damage, at which point it begins attacking the player. While attacking, it floats around the player and goes through blocks in a similar manner to Cursed Skulls. Additionally, it randomly alternates between firing destructible Water Spheres that go through blocks, dashing away from the player to keep distance, and dashing towards the player at high speed. The Water Bolt Mimic has a 1/40 (2.5%) chance to drop the Water Bolt upon death.

Notes

  • In order for the Water Bolt Mimic to spawn, the same spawning requirements as other Dungeon enemies need to be met. Additionally, it has some unique requirements:[1]
    • The game searches a 32×32-tile square area for any placed Books, with the top left corner of this area being the block directly to top left of the initial spawn tile. If there are multiple Books within this area, it picks the Book closest to the initial spawn tile. The Book has to be within a certain distance of the player (more than 63.88 tiles away horizontally and more than 39.94 tiles away vertically, measured from the player's center[2]),[3] otherwise the next closest Book will be checked and so on. Once a valid Book is found, the Water Bolt Mimic spawns in front of it, occupying the same space as the Book. If no valid Book is found, the Water Bolt Mimic will not spawn.
  • Unlike Mimics, Statue and Nymph, the Water Bolt Mimic does not get provoked by the player getting too close. It stays in its disguised form until it takes damage, even if the player is directly next to it.[4]
    • It still deals contact damage while in its disguised form, however.
  • While the Water Bolt Mimic is in its disguised form, hovering the cursor over it will not display its name. Hovering the cursor over it will also not display a Water Bolt icon, unlike the actual Water Bolt Book.[5]
  • It is possible for multiple Water Bolt Mimics to spawn in front of the same Book and stack on top of each other.
  • If the player breaks the block underneath a disguised Water Bolt Mimic without dealing damage to it, it will continue to levitate midair without leaving its disguise.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Water Bolt Mimic: "Appearing at first glance to be a magic tome of unspeakable power, this sneaky monster dines on the fingers of anyone foolish enough to attempt to decipher the runes within."

  2. The player's center is determined by the center of their hitbox, which is 42 pixels high and 20 pixels wide. If we consider the player takes up a 2-tile-wide×3-tile-high area, the player's center will be located at the middle tile in the left column of the 2×3 area when the player is standing exactly at the center of 2 tiles.
