The Water Strider is a harmless critter that spawns on bodies of water on the Surface during the day. It only spawns near Sand or Jungle grass blocks, but not in the Ocean biome. It will not spawn if the wind speed exceeds 20 mph.[1] The Water Strider moves by gliding on water and hopping around on land. The Water Strider has only 5 health and no defense, and can be damaged by other enemies and players.

The Water Strider can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture (Water Strider Cage). Once crafted, the Water Strider cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

The Water Strider can be used as bait for fishing, with 17% bait power.

There is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Water Strider to spawn in place of an ordinary one.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Water Strider: "Glides elegantly along the surface of calm bodies of water searching for smaller bugs. Fish are occasionally attracted to these."
  • The Water Strider design appears less like real-world water striders, and more like the Pokémon character Surskit which seems to be based on real-world water striders.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Spawn rate increased.
    • Increased the maximum level of windiness that will allow Water Striders to spawn from 10 mph to 20 mph.
