This article is about the Werewolf enemy. For the buff of the same name, see Werewolf (buff). For the painting, see The Werewolf.
The Werewolf is a Hardmode enemy that only spawns at night while a full moon is active, during which it is as common as a Zombie. Werewolves can open doors and have a 1/8 (12.5%) chance to inflict the Bleeding debuff for 45 / 90 / 112.5 seconds. At close range, Werewolves attack the player by leaping or lunging, closing distances quickly to catch unwary players off-guard.
The Werewolf can drop the Moon Charm, which allows the player to transform into a Werewolf at night.
Notes
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Silver Bullets deal 3× damage to Werewolves.[1]
- The Werewolf will still attack the player even if the player has the Werewolf buff from the Moon Charm or its upgrades.
- Werewolves can spawn during Blood Moons only if it is also a full moon, and without increased spawn rates.[2]
Tips
- The nights on which Werewolves will spawn can be tracked through the items that certain NPCs sell, as the Painter sells paintings based on the moon phase. The inventories of the Clothier, Dye Trader, Zoologist(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Skeleton Merchant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) will also have unique items, though a Sextant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or derived informational item provides this same information much more directly. Additionally, the Zoologist's appearance will change directly during the night of a full moon (or during Blood Moons), which can also be a helpful indicator.
- Using a Water Candle and/or Battle Potion can be useful for farming the Moon Shell and later the Celestial Shell.
- If under-powered on the night of a full moon Werewolves can be fought regardless using the same strategies one might use against early-game Zombies, such as boxing oneself into safety and opening a small hole from which to release projectiles.
Trivia
- In common lore, the main weakness of werewolves is silver. This is why Silver Bullets in Terraria deal increased damage specifically to Werewolves, in the
Desktop version,
Console version, and
Mobile version. However, no other silver items in the game have any particular benefit in dealing with Werewolves.
- Werewolves in Terraria also share the trait of roaming during a full moon with common lore werewolves.
- The
Bestiary entry for the Werewolf: "Cursed by the moonlight, these menacing lupines were once human. Now, they feast on their loved ones instinctively."
